Abstract
This study explores “archaeo-xenobiotics”—traces of human-made substances like spices, medicines, and pollutants—preserved in archaeological sites. Using advanced techniques, we’re analyzing ancient samples, from early settlements to medieval times, to find these chemical traces. Our goal is to understand how these substances circulated and persisted in the environment over long periods. We’re combining high resolution mass spectrometry analysis with computer tools to identify molecular signatures in samples like old latrines and sediments. This innovative approach promises to reveal new insights into human activities, trade, and environmental impacts in the past. We aim to improve methods for identifying these traces and contribute to our understanding of both historical and modern environmental issues.
