Abstract

Summary

Archaea possess unique isoprenoid membranes that are often modified into unique structures. The modification of archaeal membranes can involve cyclization, methylation, and cross-linking and these modifications are thought to be influenced by environmental conditions. In this study, we investigate the biochemistry responsible for lipid modification in archaea and the conditions under which archaea produce different lipid structures. Specifically, we identify proteins responsible for the formation and methylation of glycerol dialkyl glycerol tetraethers (GDGTs) and glycerol monoalkyl glycerol tetraethers (GMGTs) in thermophilic archaea and explore how elevated temperatures and other environmental conditions impact the production of these lipids in culture.
