Abstract

Summary

We report the exclusive occurrence of non-phosphorus containing intact polar membrane lipids in biofilms found in sulfidic caves. These biofilms are known to be mainly comprised of sulfide-oxidizing bacteria belonging to the gram negative Campylobacteria and Gammaproteobacteria, which are not know to produce the observed glycolipids and betaine lipids. We conclude that these cave communities are severely phosphorus limited and will furthermore provide genetic evidence for the lipid assignments.
