The Ionian Sea is an oil-gas prolific area in Western Greece in which hydrocarbon exploration is currently being performed.
This work uses seismic and well data in order to record and map gas escape features accross the area and assess their origin.
Analysis of depth-migrated seismic reflection data, integrated with regional well information, reveals several gas chimneys and pockmarks, pointing to an active petroleum system. In addition, seismic interpretation suggests that most gas escape features are sourced from deeply buried Alpine SRs -essentially from the Burano and Pantokrator Fms- while post-Alpine units’ contribution is subordinate. Mapping of these features together with the known regional oil and gas shows, highlights the Ionian Sea’s hydrocarbon potential.
