HEREMA, the competent authority for the geological storage of CO2 in Greece, established an integrated technical and regulatory workflow for reviewing the CO2 storage permit application in the depleted Prinos oil field in northern GreeceL Large volumes of data collected over several decades of oil production were transformed into a robust forward-looking, integrated workflow, capable of demonstrating long-term CO2 containment and assessing properly the application. Key technical components included history-matched dynamic reservoir modeling, geomechanical calibration, evaluation of CO2 migration and trapping mechanisms and identification of potential leakage pathways. These elements were combined into a stepwise, transparent workflow, where outputs and uncertainties from each stage directly informed subsequent steps, enabling HEREMA to clearly trace how changes or uncertainties in one component propagate through the entire storage system and affect overall storage performance. This approach to storage permit application review, not only strengthens regulatory confidence but also establishes a replicable methodology for other CO2 storage projects in depleted hydrocarbon reservoirs.
