Effective communication and collaboration between operations and drilling teams is critical for maintaining wellbore trajectory and optimizing reservoir contact. While drilling a horizontal well, the geosteering team constructs a real-time structural model of the reservoir using Logging While Drilling (LWD) data. This close interpretation of the reservoir often necessitates frequent updates to the drilling trajectory to target the best reservoir properties. The ability to quickly transition between old and new trajectories based on LWD data interpretation is critical for keeping the wellbore within the reservoir in real-time, especially when navigating complex reservoirs.
Traditionally, geologists and drillers communicate via text, email, and phone, which can lead to inefficiencies and errors. To address this, we propose a workflow that automates the transmission of real-time target line data to update well plans through a unified communication feedback loop. Key benefits of the new workflow include increased efficiency, improved well placement accuracy, enhanced collaboration, and minimized errors. By automatically recalculating the well trajectory from updated geosteering interpretations, drilling operations can more accurately align with the geological target, reducing non-productive time. This approach has already been successfully applied within unconventional operations to optimize operations, while ensuring better decisionmaking and operational efficiency through advanced data synchronization.
