Abstract
Urban green spaces are considered as an effective environmental solution to mitigate the UHI effect, so maintaining green spaces in cities is crucial. The aim of the study is to identify the types of vegetation in Kyiv territories that have the best ability to reduce the warming of the land surface under UHI effects. The analysis of the MODIS Land Surface Temperature data collection allowed us to establish a general trend in the temporal distribution of LST, which indicates a stable annual increase in LST. The WorldCover datasets allow to determine the type of land cover and obtain information on the type of vegetation of the territories. Thermal infrared RS was used to study and assess the LST. To quantify vegetation density, the NDVI index was calculated based on spectral correlations. The quantitative assessment is based on Landsat 8–9 data. The study indicates that the best UHI effects are observed in mixed forest vegetation and herb vegetation with sufficient moisture conditions. The effectiveness of cooling the land surface is influenced by the nature of the vegetation cover and the vital state of plants, in particular, sparse and dry vegetation of various types is not effective in reducing abnormal temperature effects.
