Abstract

Summary

The western Black Sea shore is known to represent thick (30–45 m) and stratigraphically complete Pleistocene loess-palaeosol sequences. Here, we present preliminary palaeopedological and rock magnetic results of the upper 19.5 m of the Sanzhiyka loess section (from the Tyligul loess unit (S-L5, MIS 12) to the Holocene). The sequence includes mainly steppe soils with distinct carbonate horizons interlayered with Cambisols and leached Chernozems. The soils of the warmest interglacials are characterized by signs of rubification. In the section, magnetic susceptibility and its frequency-dependence factor increase significantly in palaeosols, demonstrating climatic phases and intensity of pedogenesis. Typically for the region, rock magnetic results indicate the presence of magnetite with a contribution of superparamagnetic grains. The combination of pedological and rock magnetic data allowed to reveal four types of palaeonvironmental changes: from subhumid subtropical MIS 11 climate to arid temperate MIS 3 climate.
