Abstract

Summary

One of the most famous minerals in Middle Prydnisteria is nodular or spherical phosphorites. The paper examines the history of Podilsk phosphorite mining and its material witnesses -phosphorite tunnels; the issue of the need for protection and preservation for descendants of abandoned phosphorite mining facilities as potential geosites, which are important scientific and informational resources illustrating the history of the development of mining in Podillya, is characterized. It is noted that the extraction of phosphorites within the Podolsk Transnistria has been suspended, because their reserves have been exhausted. In addition, phosphorite mines are a vivid example of mining and industrial geosites of Ukraine, a monument to the development of the earth’s subsoil, pages of the past of the Ukrainian people. It was determined that it is necessary to study archival and fund materials, organize expeditionary research with the broad involvement of specialists - geologists, historians, speleologists - in order to create a catalog of old phosphorite galleries and select objects for declaring them mining and industrial geosites.
