Abstract

Summary

Based on a recently discovered map of 1793, it is possible to argue that in the distant past there was a huge island in the middle reaches of the Dnipro River, within which the city of Cherkasy and more than 10 villages were located. The right-bank branch of the Dnipro River was called Irdyn. The existence of this branch and the island is confirmed by more modern cartographic works, as well as a three-dimensional image of this territory. Today, the former branch of the Dnipro River is the Irdyn swamp, as well as the lowland area along the Tyasmyn River. To prevent flooding from the Kremenchuk reservoir, several dams were built here. In addition, a few pumping stations pump water into the reservoir.
