Abstract

Summary

An alternative to centralised water supply in the city of Kharkiv is 25 developed groundwater sources. The city’s hydrogeological conditions have led to the formation of numerous aquifers and complexes. As in the entire artesian basin of the Dnipro-Donetsk Basin, two hydrogeological layers and a transition zone between them are distinguished in Kharkiv. Various institutions in the city have been studying the quality of water in the springs for about 30 years. The paper presents a detailed analysis of water quality in springs based on our own research and analysis of existing stock materials for 53 indicators. It was found that the water in most of KharkiVs sources has significant deviations from the normative indicators. The main problems are hardness, high content of bromine, sulphates, heavy metals and nitrates. None of the springs in Kharkiv provide water that can be drunk without boiling. In all cases, the use of an active carbon filter is desirable. However, in terms of quality, the best springs are those in Sarzhyn Yar and on the outskirts of the city in Pavlenky village. The water from the following sources is favourable for the use of relatively simple water treatment methods: Oleksiyivske-1, Tyurynske and Yuvileyne
