Abstract

Summary

The study examines the current state and spatial structure of protected areas in Kyiv, which constitute an essential component of the city’s ecological framework and green infrastructure. Based on open data and the results of spatial analysis in a GIS environment, the share of protected areas within the administrative districts of the capital was assessed. At the same time, the analysis revealed a number of challenges. Chief among them is the limited and fragmented availability of information regarding the size, boundaries, and actual condition of many protected areas. The absence of a comprehensive and up-to-date database complicates the objective evaluation of their functioning and the development of strategies for green infrastructure planning. Overall, the results indicate an uneven distribution of protected areas across Kyiv, which undermines the ecological resilience of the urban environment and necessitates the integration of existing and newly designated protected areas into a unified green infrastructure of the capital. The findings may be applied in urban planning, the development of environmental strategies, and the sustainable development policy of Kyiv.
