Abstract

Summary

The 28th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP28) concluded with a strong call for deep and immediate reductions in greenhouse gas emissions to keep the goal of limiting global temperature rise to 1.5°C within reach. To achieve this target, the agreement highlights the critical role of implementing carbon removal technologies, such as carbon capture and storage (CCS), in reducing emissions and addressing the impacts of climate change. In this context, the comprehensive expertise of oil and gas exploration geologists can now be strategically redirected to evaluate the suitability of potential CO storage sites within sedimentary basins located near major sources of anthropogenic emissions.
