Abstract

Summary

Recent developments in the geotechnical industry in Australia and New Zealand (and globally) have highlighted challenges related to the education of geotechnical engineers and engineering geologists, industry expectations of university graduates, and a workforce shortage.

In response to these developments and concerns, the Australian Geomechanics Society (AGS) and the New Zealand Geotechnical Society (NZGS) held a panel discussion at the Australia and New Zealand Conference on Geomechanics in Cairns, which aimed to understand the perspectives of different stakeholders and to formulate a plan forward. The panel included a young geotechnical professional (YGP), an industry representative and an academic from both Australia and New Zealand. During the panel discussion the fundamental question was posed: Is geotechnical engineering/engineering geology education and training meeting the needs of graduates and the industry? The panel discussion saw strong engagement from the audience. We undertook further consultation via a series of roadshows in 2024. This presentation will focus on the research completed leading up to the Cairns conference, key findings from the four 2024 panel discussions completed to date, and the planned next steps.
