Carbon capture (utilization) and sequestration will be a key emissions mitigation measure throughout Southeast Asia. Upcoming projects include Kasawari and Lang Lebah in Malaysia, Tangguh, Sakakemang, Sukowati and Arun in Indonesia, Papua LNG in PNG and Arthit in Thailand. These total an annual injection capacity of 13 MMtCO2/y – small compared to current and forecast emissions – but a necessary first step in the development of a broader industry. Stable regulation, stakeholder engagement and cost management will be critical to the successful implementation of these projects. Indonesia’s announced financial incentives and potential of storage services to be made available to third parties represent a positive example. Existing supply chains are expected to come under pressure initially with costs to increase by 17–33%. Post 2030 the potential for significant cost reductions exists through economies of scale and hub development.
