In one of the world’s most prolific and complex offshore carbonate oil fields, two hydrocarbon-bearing reservoir Reservoir A (shallow) and Reservoir B (deep) remained almost untouched for over two decades, long overshadowed by more productive zones.
The challenges of managing the Reservoir A reservoir includes heterogeneity in facies, faults, and fractures and variable HC thickness, which result in production contrasts; low permeability injector intervals causing positive voidage; and gas breakthrough from the gas cap, which chokes back oil production.
Additionally, the field has to contend with low-performing wells and the need for short term oil gains to address unexpected shortfalls.
The management of large-scale multidimensional datasets and massive operations, with over a 1,000% increase in the number of wells within five years, further complicates the reservoir management process.
With the arrival of North Oil Company as the new operator, a bold and forward-thinking vision was launched: to unlock the full potential of these underdeveloped reservoirs through a phased, technology driven full-scale development campaign.
