The Effect of Clay Minerals of Reservoir Formations on Chemical and Rheological Properties of Heavy Oil by Steam Distillation
Authors Y.T. Osgouei, M. Parlaktuna and Ş. DemirciAn experimental study was carried out to investigate the role of various clay and non-clay minerals present in carbonate formations on steam distillation process. Dead oils samples (100 g) of two heavy oil reservoirs from Southeastern Turkey with 30 g water and 10 g crushed rock (limestone + mineral) were kept under steam pressure in a batch autoclave reactor for a period of 40 hours, and the results were compared as the changes in the density, viscosity and chemical composition (SARA). Three different minerals (bentonite, kaolinite, and zeolite) were added to the crushed limestone to observe their effects on the rheological and compositional changes during steam distillation process. The results of this experimental study showed that minerals have catalytic effect during steam distillation. Along with the increase in viscosity and density of remaining oil after steam distillation the chemical composition also changes. There is an increase in the asphaltene content while concentration of polar compounds decrease as the result of steam distillation.

Experimental and Simulation Study of Matrix Fracture Interaction in Sandstone Core Samples by CO2, CH4 And N2 Injection
Authors S. Bülbül and M. ParlaktunaIn this study, it is aimed at investigating matrixfracture interaction mechanisms with gas injection in a fractured sandstone core system. Influence of a fracture on matrix-fracture interaction processes and effects of type of the gas injected (namely, carbon dioxide, methane and nitrogen), initial gas saturation and diffusion coefficient in terms of oil recovery are studied by an experimental and simulation work. Gas oil gravity drainage and diffusion mechanisms are studied by introducing CO2, N2 and CH4 gases to the system and obtaining corresponding oil recoveries with time. An artificial fracture is created around Berea sandstone cores and system is kept at a pressure of 250 psi and at a reservoir temperature of 70 °C. n-decane is used as the oil phase. Experiments carried out with CO2 injection has resulted in higher oil recoveries than experiments carried out with CH4 and N2 respectively. It is obtained that availability of initial gas saturation in matrix increased recovery in CO2 experiments. A simulation study is also carried out to compare experimental results using CMG (Computer Modeling Group Ltd.) WinProp (Microsoft Windows™ based Phase-Behavior and Fluid Property Program) and GEM (Generalized Equation-of-State Model Compositional Reservoir Simulator) on a core scale basis. Keyword: Matrix-Fracture Interaction, Gas-Oil Gravity Drainage, Diffusion, CO2, N2 and Methane Injection, Oil Recovery

Reflecting Risks and Uncertainties in Reserves Estimations Using Reserves Classification Frameworks
Authors M.F. Tuğan, M. Onur and M. YılmazThe main target of all shareholders is to increase their income by producing oil and/or gas. The key parameter to produce oil and/or gas is the investments, such as purchasing licences, drilling wells, and constructing production facilities. Oil companies program their investments to a particular field by analyzing the ultimate recovery from that field, i.e. have to know their reserves and the associated risks and uncertainties. To have a better understanding on the risks and uncertainties in estimated results, resources are classified using international or local frameworks. This work will examine the two most widely used international frameworks (SPE-PRMS and UNFC), basic concepts concerning them.

Neural Network Applications of Seismic Attributes for Predicting Porosity and Production
By U. ÇelikThe introduction of seismic attributes to the exploration world has brought another dimension to the seismic data interpretation. Further development has introduced another approach known as multi-attribute analysis which uses artificial neural networks (ANNs) to combine the multiple attributes to predict desired reservoir properties. Seismic attribute analysis using neural network applications has become an important tool for understanding the physical features and internal structure of reservoirs. Understanding such features is vital to provide effective strategies for exploration and exploitation in both new and old survey areas.

A Simulation Study of Immiscible CO2 WAG Injection in the Bati Kozluca Heavy Oil Field
More LessBati Kozluca field is a heavy oil carbonate reservoir discovered in 1984; it is located in the South East of Turkey, close to Syria border. The reservoir began primary production in 1985, developed with 41 wells producing 12 API oil. The permeability and porosity are 500 mD and 25% respectively. Reservoir depth is up to 1520 m and the original reservoir pressure is 2000 psia. Reservoir thickness is 133 m with 17% of net to gross ratio. Main constraints for oil recovery of the field are the high viscosity and low aquifer support. To increase the oil recovery, reservoir management and re-evaluation studies started in 2000. First EOR methods were screened and it was decided to apply immiscible CO2 injection. There is a CO2 reservoir at Camurlu Field which is 10 km away from the Bati Kozluca Field so that CO2 injection method has the priority among other EOR methods. In 2003, immiscible CO2 injection was started to increase the oil recovery. Until 2007, immiscible CO2 injection had been continued. However, the increase in the recovery was limited because of the quick breakthrough and adverse mobility ratio between CO2 and oil. In 2007, to overcome the problems associated with the mobility ratio, water alternating CO2 injection was started. According to results, oil recovery increased and also water and gas production decreased after applying WAG method. This paper describes the field-wide simulation study conducted to predict the future reservoir performance of the black oil simulation model under various operating and development strategies. Firstly, available data is screened and quality of the data is evaluated and then the model is history-matched on both the field and the well scale. Continuous CO2 injection and WAG methods are considered and WAG method is found the most favorable method to increase the oil recovery and to decrease the amount of CO2 injected.

Reservoir Simulation Study of Bozova Oil Field
Authors M.C. Ertürk and M. YılmazBozova Oil Field, with 1.4 km2 area, is located in the southeastern part of Turkey. Reservoir thickness ranges 27 to 40 m with 60 % of net to gross ratio and it is found at depth around 2400 m. In terms of quality, the reservoir has moderate porosity, low permeability, and water and compaction drive mechanisms with an average oil density of 23 API and initial pressure of 2550 psia. To date, 8 wells have been drilled, 4 of which are active and production accumulated throughout 18 years amounts approximately 1.6 million barrels. The purpose of the study is to improve a full-field reservoir simulation for Bozova field including data review, history matching and production forecast. The first step of that is quality-checked of geologic model to accept it for commencing of the simulation project. In the next step, scrutinizing of available PVT and petrophysical data as input is essential part to honor the reservoir system in a proper way. After initialization of the base case, calibration of reservoir simulation model to the historical production data is a required step before a reservoir model can be utilized for making predictions of the future performance of the reservoir. In the study, several development strategies were simulated by launching do nothing case, additional new wells, and waterflooding case. As a result, all those forecasts will give us insight into different approaches and the result of alternative applications causing production increasing in Bozova field.

Eksik Verili Rezervuar Karakterizasyonu Problemlerinde Kısmi Çifte Olasılıklı Parametre Tahmin Yönteminin Kullanımı
Authors M.D.

Numerical simulation of two-phase oil and water flow
Authors A. Sever, Ö.İ. Türeyen and M. Onurmethods. However, there exist numerous articles that attempt to develop and present analytical solutions in the literature for the two-phase flow of oil and water under some restricted assumptions (e.g., homogenous reservoir). Analytical solutions may be easy and fast to apply, but may not well represent the oil and water flow because of their restrictive assumptions. On the other hand, numerical methods are more appealing to solve the oil and water phase flow for more general cases. Due to its generality, in this study, we consider numerical based methods (i.e., finite difference methods) to solve the diffusivity equation for oil-water flow and investigate the pressure and water saturation behaviors of a vertical well and reservoir for the cases where analytical solutions are not available. A general discretized equationis derived for simulating two-phase water and oil flow in three-dimensional (3-D) r-θ-z cylindrical coordinate system using the finite difference method. Then, this general difference equation is solved by considering two different methods. The first method is based on a fully implicit solution of both pressure and saturation (FIMPS) using the Newton method, and the other method is based on a fully implicity solution of pressure and explicit solution of saturation, which is known as the IMPES method. Derivations for both methods are given in this study. The solutions generated from the simulators developed during the course of this work were compared and validated with the solutions generated from a commericial software CMG - IMEX.Moreover, we also validate the simulator for some benchamark cases taken from the papers presented in the literature. Finally, some well-test applications are run with the simulator and pressure differences and their derivatives (diagnostic plots) are analyzed. This process is achieved with the commercial well-test software ECRIN. Behaviour and effects of mechanical skin on diagnostic plots for injection and fall-off tests are discussed.

A numerical study of the pressure behavior of a vertical well in a dry gas reservoir
Authors C. Alan, Ö.İ. Türeyen and M. OnurPredicting production performance of a dry gas reservoir for reservoir management acquires understanding the behavior of pressure transients and fluid distribution over both space and time. In recent years, reservoir simulators have been extensively used to build various reservoir and well models to investigate and visualize the process under a series of potential scenarios, such as drilling new wells and injecting fluids. The objective of this study is to develop and present applications of a general purpose two-dimensional (2D) r-z, fully implicit, single-phase, real gas simulation model with a single well located at the center of a cylindrical reservoir. The simulation model includes wellbore storage, skin and non-Darcy flow effects. As the problem is non-linear, solve pressures at each gridblock at a specific time may require more than one iteration. Since two different methods called as functional iteration and Newton’s methods are applicable to solve such systems, they are analyzed, verified using at least two different solvers with respect to accuracy and speed. The simulator is verified by a well-known well test analysis software to perform a number of real field applications such as standard and routine tests of natural gas industry (i.e., flow-afterflow, isochronal and modified isochronal tests) for both partially and fully penetrated wells either in a single or multilayered systems. The simulator is also capable of conducting a packer-probe test called as Mini-Drill Stem Test (MiniDST) for estimation of reservoir properties such as permeability, skin, etc. The effect of Non-Darcy flow on pressure solutions at the tested well as well as throughout the reservoir for the entire flow rate history is also investigated in a different manner than described in mathematical formulation such that the a non-Darcy flow area in radial direction is introduced and restricted to a region of a specific radius which is concentric with wellbore.

Authors D. Yıldırım, C. Çetinkaya, İ.P. Hacıköylü, M.Z. Alper, A. Yılmaz, M. Akpınar, Y. Karakeçe and M. YılmazKuzey Marmara offshore sahası 1988 yılında keşfedilmiştir. Modellemede her layerda fasiyes zonlarına koşullandırma sağlanmıştır.

Production Performance Analysis of Coal Bed Methane, Shale Gas, and Tight Gas Reservoirs with Different Well Trajectories and Completion Techniques
Authors M.C. Ertürk and Ç. SinayuçThe vast majority of gas production all over the world comes from conventional reservoirs that become ever-increasingly difficult to discover and exploit. However, business cycles and higher gas prices affect and change the gas production strategy of the industry. Concordantly, the significance of unconventional gas reservoirs has been increasing for recent years owing to economic viability of their development and, therefore identification of the challenges and common pitfalls regarding those have been gaining importance at the same time. In the last decades, the exploitation of unconventional gas reservoirs such as coalbed methane, shale gas, and tight gas has become an ever increasing part of world gas supply. With state of the art technology and high gas prices, these resources can be developed by achieving economical gas production. The economic viability of many unconventional gas developments hinges on effective stimulation of extremely low permeability rock by creating very complex well trajectories and fracture networks. Generally, unconventional gas reservoirs are described as having very large hydrocarbon reserves in place, a low expected ultimate recovery, and low permeability. These reservoirs cannot provide efficient amount of gas with an economical rate and they require some special stimulation treatment techniques. Mostly, horizontal wells or multilateral wells with transverse hydraulic fractures make the feasible production rates possible, and improved performance of these reservoirs should be taken into account as much accurate as possible. Evaluation of unconventional gas reservoirs is much more challenging as compared to conventional gas reservoirs due to their complex rock properties, drilling and completion techniques, and production mechanism. Each unconventional gas reservoir is unique and needs special interests to be characterized accurately. Ordinarily, it is very difficult to characterize them and choose the right recovery techniques. Accurate stimulation and determination of the unconventional gas reservoir systems plays an important role to produce natural gas commercially and optimize the recovery properly. At this point, numerical simulation approach that is the most beneficial tool to validate and predict the performance of these kinds of systems provided that adequate and reliable data are available comes into play. Although simulation of the unconventional gas reservoirs are also challenging process due to the several reasons like ultra-low permeability, desorption, complex geological characteristics, it offers remarkable potential for understanding of unconventional gas reservoirs. The main effort of this study is to investigate the well performance of coalbed methane, shale gas, and tight gas reservoirs with different well configurations and stimulation scenarios. In order to obtain the outcome of these analyses, a 3D layered geological model with a 25x25x52 grid having four different zones with different thicknesses was constructed and modified for each reservoir system with different characteristics as a means of providing some distributed properties by Petrel. On the other hand, the reason the models were created with similar areal extend is to compare the gas in place and recovery of each system. A series of reservoir simulation were performed by Eclipse as a commercial numerical simulator with two types of porosity system; dual porosity for coalbed methane and shale gas reservoirs, single porosity for tight gas reservoir. In some reservoir systems, hydraulic fractures were represented and included into the model by local grid refinement and permeability multiplier facilities of Eclipse for vertical, horizontal, and multilateral well types.

Using Rock Physics and AVO tools to determine hydrocarbon bearing zones in an exploration well, Diyarbakir Basin, Southeast Turkey
Authors S. Baytok, S. Dündar, M. Mutafçılar, B. Üstün, Ş.A. Aktepe and M. KılıçayRock physics provides a good theoretical tool and understanding of the connection between the elastic parameters and the physical properties of reservoir rocks; therefore, a relationship and a link between physical rock properties and seismic expressions can be established. This study aims to utilize rock physics and AVO theoretical tools to better determine and characterize hydrocarbon-bearing zones at a newly drilled “Well-A” in Diyarbakir Basin in the southeastern Turkey. “Well-A” is located at 10 km in distance to major producing oil fields targeting limestones of Dadas Formation and sandstones of Bedinan Formations. In the vicinity of Well-A, two exploration wells were drilled before and completed as “dry well” with minor oil and gas shows. In the area, source rocks are the shales in Dadas Formation in Diyarbakir and northern Diyarbakir area and early Cretaceous age carbonates in Adiyaman area. Reservoir rocks are early Paleocene age Sinan and Garzan Formations, late Cretaceous age carbonates of Mardin Group’s Karababa and Derdere Formations, and sandstones of Paleozoic Bedinan and Hazro Formations. There has been 2 Drill Stem Tests (DST) conducted at wellbore. First DST was successful between the depths from 2755 to 2767 m (9038-9078 ft) and 81 stand (st) gas mud mixed condensed was recovered. Second DST was between 2863-2893 m (9393-9491 ft) and 28 st. recovery was made. At this point, rock physics and AVO studies are required to aid in the determination of hydrocarbon-bearing zones for perforation. Rock physics part of this study includes the calculation of elastic parameter logs. Lame constant (λ), Lambda-Rho, Shear Modulus (μ), Mu-Rho, Young’s Modulus (E), Poisson’s Ratio (σ), Bulk Modulus (k) were calculated and used to create crossplots to determine and evaluate hydrocarbon-bearing intervals. Lambda*Rho vs. Lambda/Mu, P-Impedance vs. Vp/ Vs, porosity vs. p-wave velocity, acoustic impedance vs. elastic impedance (at 30 degrees) and Vp vs. Vs crossplots were generated and examine to determine possible reservoir intervals. Specific focus has been put on Young’s Modulus (E) and Poisson’s Ratio (σ) to determine brittle and ductile zones for a future fracking operation. Shear-wave sonic log measurement plays a crucial role in the calculation of elastic parameter logs since all the equations require shear-wave velocity information.

An Experimental Study of Silicate-Polymer Gel Systems to Seal Shallow Water Flow and Lost Circulation Zones in Top Hole Drilling
Authors A. Ay, İ.H. Gücüyener and M.V. KökPlacement of silicate based gel systems is one of the oldest methods to seal such undesired zones. For this study, sodium-silicate based gel system is investigated experimentally. This gel system is deliberately delayed multi-component system mixed as a uniform liquid at the surface but desired to form strong gel where it is placed in the well. The experimentally analyzed system is composed of distilled water, sodiumsilicate solution, polymer solution, lost circulation materials, weighting agent and organic initiator. In this study, effect of these components on gel time, gel quality and gel strength at room temperature is investigated as a function of their concentration. To be able to compare gelation time of different compositions, gel time tests were performed by following the developed method in this study. Observation codes were defined to be able to compare the gel qualities of different compositions. For gel time and quality tests, sodium-silicate (SS) concentrations from 3.5% to 15% were studied and the concentrations between 7.5% and 10% were found as optimum. Gel time is getting higher as silicate-initiator ratio (SIR) increases for these optimum concentrations. It was also determined that, addition of polymers reduces the gel time and increases the elasticity of the resulting gels. Long term gelation process was investigated by monitoring turbidity (NTU) of the mixtures and plotting NTU versus time curves. Viscosity development curves obtained from rotational viscometer at various constant shear rates indicated reduced gelation times with increasing shear rate. Furthermore, by using modified High-Pressure, High-Temperature filter press cell, it was determined that, addition of lost circulation materials increases the extrusion pressure.
