Campo Guando, Primer Descubrimiento De La Antesala Del Siglo XXI En El Valle Superior Del Magdalena, Colombia

Campo Libertador, Cuenca Oriente, Ecuador; Existen Más Reservas Por Recuperar?

More LessThe Mesozoic assigned silicoclastic sediments of Southern Ucayali Basin held, up to now, the most important Gas acumulation in Peru. The integration of surface and sub-surface data provided by recent wells (logs, cores and cutting samples) and 3D seismic acquired in the block 88, allowed to create sequence stratigraphic and reservoir model. Throughout the seismostratigraphic analysis, not less than four third-order depositional sequences were defined in the studied interval. Local and regional unconformities limit these units. A strong tectonic control is identified in the sedimentation of the lower sequences. This tectonic generated NNE-SSW narrow depocenters that contrast with the WNW-ESE predominant orientation of the Tertiary Andean structures. Sedimentary models that allow the prediction of the sandy bodies geometry were constructed. Besides, cores and cutting microscopic analyses also help the identification of the reservoir petrophysical variations. The obtained results give key data to properly characterize the reservoir as flow units and help in definition of future borehole location.

Lote 88 “ Camisea”. Geometria Y Origen De Las Trampas De Gas. Cuenca De Ucayali. Este De Peru
Authors A. Disalvo, M. Arteaga and J. Chung ChingEl Lote 88, "Camisea", is located in the outer Subandean Thrust Belt of the Ucayali Basin, eastern Perú. The structural style is thin-skinned with the lower detachment placed in the Silurian shale. The deformation took place during the tertiary Andean Orogeny. The dominant structures are several kilometers length ramp anticlines. These structures are WNW-ESE trended and around a thousand meters of structural height. These anticlines, that are the main hydrocarbon traps, are interpreted to be generated either by a simple thrust or by a complex thrust system. Altough minor faults propagation anticlines and interference structures are present, they are not important as hydrocarbons traps. The already found hydrocarbon traps are gas filled to their spill points with no oil ring. They belong to Class I in Sales´s Classification. The final geometry of the traps are due to the combination of four main factors: 1.-The original fault bend anticlines geometry. 2.- The imbrications of two o more faults. 3.-Several minor out-of-sequence and accommodation faults developed in the crest of the anticlines. 4.- Sedimentary and stratigraphic elements that generate a NNW-SSE hills and valleys, regularly trended, separated 2 - 3 km each and more than 30 Km in length. These features, with more than 100 m relief, are superimposed to the main geometry deformation.

The Gibraltar Case Study, Northern Llanos Foothills, Colombia. Success Of A Complex Technical Business In Complicated Environments
Authors T. Villamil, J. Muñoz, J. Sanchez, J.J. Aristizabal, J. Velasco, A. Fajardo, P.E. Luna, A. Mantilla, L.E. Peña, M.G. Paz, O. Silva, E. Sanchez, N.S. Meza, J. Martinez, L.A. Pachon and E. GallardoThe Gibraltar discovery by Ecopetrol opened a frontier area of significant extent in the previously untested northern Llanos foothills province of the Eastern Cordillera of Colombia. The Gibraltar project when Ecopetrol captured the block had three main objectives and all were accomplished. The first objective was to verify or refute a structural geological model with a sidetrack that would reach the Paleocene Barco Formation and demonstrate the presence of hydrocarbons in the area. Ecopetrol´s hypothesis postulated that the well drilled originally by Occidental penetrated the backlimb of a single stack within a duplex structure in the central region of a triangle zone. This model was proven right after drilling three sidetracks. The Barco tested water with very low percentage of light hydrocarbons. The second purpose was to test presence and quality of hydrocarbons in the Mirador Formation. The original hypothesis was postulated based on a reinterpretation of unconventional petrophysics and unconventional fluids, this hypothesis argued for a missed or bypassed pay case. Tests of the Mirador Formation verified the presence of 57-degree condensate that flowed at a rate of 600 barrels per day and 44 million cubic feet of gas per day, flux restricted by gas separation and storage capacity. The third objective of Gibraltar re-entry was to find commercial hydrocarbons, open a new play, and to increase risk investment in the region. This third objective has not been verified yet but the following characteristics indicate that it is extremely likely that this is the case: the well is 2 km from a main pipeline with capacity, the hydrocarbons are of very good quality; the crest of the structure is at 6,500 feet, the shallowest discovery of the foothills; permeability from tests is of 800 m.d. being the highest of the foothills; finding cost for Ecopetrol was of 7 cents per barrel; finally and most importantly, the discovery was the first in the region.

Desarrollo De Un Yacimiento Con Geometria Compleja En Faja Plegada Mediante La Perforación De Pozos Horizontales: Yacimiento El Porton (Argentina)

Discrete Fracture Characterization Applied To The Margarita Field, Bolivia
More LessThe Margarita field in Bolivia was discovered in 1998 through the drilling and testing of the well MGR-x1. The discovered reservoir is the Huamampampa deep Devonian naturally fractured formation, containing gas and condensate. Two other wells MGR-x2 and MGR-x3 were drilled showing better fracture characteristics than the well MGR-x1. With the objective to improve the productivity of the well MGR-x1 a programme to perform a sidetrack and drill a horizontal section was proposed. Both, image logs interpretation and outcrops analogue study, provided the basic tools to establish the methodology applied to generate a discrete fracture network distribution to the vicinity area of the proposed horizontal section. Subsequent application of the fluid flow equations through fractures established a methodology to first calibrate the fractures productivity with the production test of the well and then to predict the productivity of the discrete fractures expected to be intercepted by the horizontal section of the well. The benefit of generating these predictions, specially during the early development stages of a field, is aimed to help in the selection of the recommended direction for the horizontal well in order to look for the largest possible number of intersections with natural fractures of best expected properties. Currently the side track operations to the well MGR-x1 is in progress.

The Tertiary Fusagasugá Succession; A Record Of The Complex Latest Cretaceous-Pre-Miocene Deformation In An Area Between The Magdalena Valley And Sabana De Bogotá
Authors G. Bayona, M. Cortés, C. Jaramillo and R. LlinasThe Tertiary succession in the Fusagasugá syncline includes unconformities, thick marginal to alluvial deposits, and an upsection change in sandstone composition that constrain pre-Miocene deformation eastward of the present western flank of the Cordillera Oriental. Five informal units were mapped along the western flank of the syncline. Lower Paleocene finegrained coastal plain deposits of Unit I (499 m) rest paraconformably upon upper Campanian shallow-marine sandstones and calcareous shales of the Guadalupe Group; palynological data document the absence of middle and upper Maastrichtian strata. The disconformity between paleosols at the top of Unit I and estuary sandstone and siltstones of Unit II (153 m) marks a second stratigraphic surface with a biostratigraphic gap that probably includes the Paleocene-Eocene boundary. The remaining succession (Units III to V; >1400 m) is not dated, and the lithofacies association of sandy siltstones and sandstones indicates that depositional environments prograded from coastal to alluvial plains. Mappeable sandstone intervals in Units II to V show lateral extent of several hundred of meters, intraformational gentle angular unconformities, and gentler dip of beds toward the axis of the syncline; these map patterns are similar to those predicted in growth strata in continental settings, suggesting accumulation during deformation. The upsection increase in population of lithic fragments and feldspars between the Guadalupe Group and Unit I, of metamorphic lithic fragments between Units I and II, and of volcanic lithic fragments between Units III and IV indicate the unroofing of source area(s) and volcanism during deposition of Units IV and V.

Quantitative Assesment Of Regional Siliciclastic Top-Seal Potential: A New Application Of Proven Technology In Frontier And Maturing South American Basins
Authors J. Deckelman, S. Lou, P. D‘Onfro and R. LahannUsing the offshore Pelotas basin, Brazil, as anexample, we present a methodology by whichpetrophysically-derived Vclay and capillary displacement pressure data, in conjunction with interval isochore maps, can be used to evaluate regional, siliciclastic present-day and paleo- top-seal effectiveness and relative risk. This method has broad application to frontier and maturing exploration areas where data limitations preclude more sophisticated seismically-derived velocity- based evaluations. As much of the Pelotas basin is deemed to be gas prone, top-seal effectiveness for normal density (0.1 to 0.2 g/cc) dry gas was assessed quantitatively by establishing relationships between density-log-derived hydrocarbon column height and overburden thickness using a most likely Vclay content. With constant Vclay, column height increases with increasing overburden due to a compaction-driven decrease in mudrock porosity, accompanied by a decrease in permeability and pore-throat diameter. Using these relationships, interval isochore maps(overburden thickness maps) can be transformed into hydrocarbon-column-height maps to define spatial variation in top-seal effectiveness, expressed in meters of contained gas column. Laboratory and model data (Aplin, Lang and Katsube, 2000) show that clay content and porosity (ultimately pore throat diameter) are the dominant controls on siliciclastic mudrock permeability, hence top-seal potential. Mudrock porosity is driven dominantly by burial - induced compaction; clay content is dependent on both depositional and diagenetic processes. Overburden can be determined with a reasonable degree of certainty from seismic and well data, whereas regional variation in clay content can, at best, only be estimated from depositional models. Therefore, for a given overburden, it is uncertainty in clay content that comprises the greatest risk in regional siliciclastic top-seal analysis. For this reason, we relate siliciclastic top-seal risk to clay content, when overburden/mudrock-porosity relationships, fluid densities, and requisite column heights are known.

El Pre-Aptense En La Cuenca Oriente Ecuatoriana
Authors M. Diaz, P. Baby, M. Rivadeneira and F. ChristophoulThe present paper describes the structural, stratigraphic and seismic characteristics of the pre-Aptian units of the Oriente Basin. The analysis of lithologic columns from wells as Sacha Profundo-1, Tambococha-1, etc..., and the interpretation of seismic sections allowed us to identify pre-Aptian formations in the central-northern and eastern parts of the Oriente basin. They consist of four seismic units: Unit 1 (Basement); Unit 2 (Paleozoic); Unit 3 (Upp.Tr. - Lw. J.) and the Unit 4 (Mid. J. - Early K.) that includes a new formation named Tambococha Fm. (eastern of the basin). Structural analysis of some structures has permitted to define the tectonic framework of the pre-Aptian basins. Two longitudinal "Back-arc" basins with different structural styles developed from Middle Jurassic to Early Cretaceous. The first one, known as the Corredor Sacha-Shushufindi, was controlled by normal deep faults and corresponds to an aborted Triassic "Rift". The second, known as Sistema Invertido Capirón- Tiputini, was structured by normal listric fault branched on a decollement located in the basement. The pre- Aptian petroliferous system of the Oriente Basin is poor studied. The Santiago Formation seems to be a good source rock, but its distribution in the Oriente basin is not well defined yet.

Historia De La Cuenca Cretacea Del VSM En Un Marco Cronoestratigrafico. Implicaciones Ambientales
By L.M.

Authors M. Fernández, H. Verzi and E. SanchezThe aim is to emphasize the use of 3-D seismic (more 2000 Km2), well-logs, cores, bioestratigraphic data to improve pre-existing regional geological models. It permits to explain different traps, provide new opportunities for exploration programs and development planning. The Vaca Muerta, Quintuco and Loma Montosa Formations (Tithonian / Early Valanginian) are transgressive-prograding depositional sequences of deep marine shales and slope to shelf carbonates and clastics deposits, in the Neuquen Basin. This interval has a preserved thickness from 375 to 1100 m and the most important hydrocarbon fields are located in Loma La Lata and Río Neuquén. However, the reservoir conditions are still a main risk factor. In the study area, the stratigraphical record shows that global eustatic sea-level changes rule the influence on sedimentation, modified by the local effects of tectonics episodes (Huincul High). Therefore, tectonism also controls the thickness of the main systems tracts, the areal distribution and the initial profile of the carbonate platform. The influence of this tectonic events is more pronuonced southward. In addition, the tidal-influenced environments appears to have been the strong control in the carbonate platform.

Subandean Basins And The Independents: The Future
Authors C. Garibaldi and D. GeroldThe current combination of external forces (industry and macro environment) has prompted an era of consolidation. The new super-majors must now satisfy even larger appetites for materiality. These point them towards focus regions with high prospectivity, which are often countered by severe technological, marketability, or geopolitical barriers. In their wake, they are leaving large interstices and regional niches to independents, including the mature, emerging, and frontier Sub Andean basins. This opens an unprecedented window of opportunity for independents. To succeed in this region they need to differentiate by adopting new strategic positions and developing a new set of technical and commercial competencies, including for example, the mitigation and management of surface risks and better knowledge about their hosts. After a successful 1990's decade our continent has now fallen victim to a generalized perception of geopolitical and economic disarray, disproving itself as a reliable supply source. Besides stabilizing politically and economically, the governments in the region must struggle to first reestablish investor credibility, and then take a daring stand to reengineer their sector policies to attract the much needed investments. Since independents should likely be their target audience, governments should tailor their legal, fiscal and contractual frameworks to the independents' financial constraints and screening criteria, facilitate access to market for stranded resources, and focus on the mitigation of their surface risks. To successfully compete among themselves and against the rest of the world's petroleum provinces, heroic measures are perhaps in order, including the slaying of "sacred cows" and other myths.

Structure Of The Offshore Sinu Accretionary Wedge. Northern Colombia
More LessThe Sinu Accretionary Wedge is located along the northern Colombia Caribbean margin an is partially exposed onshore (Lower Magdalena valley and San Jacinto mountains) and offshore extending from Uraba to the offshore Santa Marta area and joints the northern accretionary wedge of Venezuela in the north. The Offshore and younger part of the prism is much wider and develope than the inner " starved " onshore part. The Proto-Magdalena, Plato and other sedimentary systems contributed to a high sediment supply triggered by the surrection of the Central and Eastern Andean Cordillera since Upper Miocene time, when the offshore part of the prism developed. The offshore Sinu accretionary wedge illustrates the effect of strong lateral (i. e. along strike) variations of syn-tectonic sediments on the structural style of the prism. The thickness of syn-sedimentary strata is huge along the Proto-Magdalena delta (Offshore Cartagena area) which results in a blanketing effect of the deformation (i. e. false image of non-deformed strata). Along strike variations of sediment supply induce lateral changes of the critical taper angle. To re-equilibrate and reach a more stable profile (lower than the critical angle) the wedge collapses through normal faulting and toe-thrusting (i. e. thrusts that accommodate rear extension). Gravitationally induced toe-thrusts are superimposed to pre-existing thrust imbricates related to compression. This complex structure becomes more complicated by the presence of a ductile level of overpressure Oligocene shale that rise as shale ridges. Listric normal faults, toe-thrusts and shale ridges control fore-arc basins like the San Bernardo basin (SW from Cartagena). The present day structure of the offshore Sinu accretionary wedge is the result of NW-vergent compressional imbricates related to the B-subduction process overprinted by extensional and compressional gravitational structures.

Evidencias Sísmicas De Una Discordancia Intra-Villeta En La Region Nor-Oriental Del Valle Superior Del Magdalena

Cajones Formation Geometry And Regional Facies Distribution In The Boomerang Hills Area, Bolivia
Authors M. Kusiak and D. ZubietaThe Cajones Formation represents one of the most important reservoirs of the Boomerang fields. This reservoir produce gas and condensate mainly from thins sands horizons and the shale's constitutes sometimes a good seal of the Yantata Formation top reservoirs. The Upper Cretaceous (Maastrichtian) Cajones Formation share a gradational contact with the Yantata Formation and it had been affected by the Pre-Tertiary unconformity, which had cut almost all the upper strata section of this sequence in the Boomerang Hills area. The representative sequence for the Boomerang consists of white calcareous sandstones interbeds in a low scale of sandy limestones and shales levels. A striking characteristic of the Cajones Formation is the abundance and diversity of shapes of cemented areas, some of which are well enough defined to be considered concretions. Different cores were cut from some exploration and exploitation wells drilled in the Boomerang Hills area, shown buried stems of woody plants or vertical to subvertical roots and some burrows of large invertebrates. The isopach map of the Cajones Formation thickness indicates thinning from east to west and south to north as a result of Pre-Tertiary unconformity at the top of the sequence. The seismic interval does not present too much thickness and its internal character has a moderate parallelism and continuity. At the northeast of the Boomerang Hills where the depositional systems or facies changes and thinning is not easy to identify the horizons where the seismic lost definition and the Cajones Formation sediments could be interpreted as Tertiary levels.
