Structural Interpretation And Source Rock Maturation Modeling Along Two Distinct Transects In The Upper / Middle Magdalena Basin, Colombia
More LessThe tectonic and stratigraphic evolution of the Magdalena Valley and adjacent areas of Colombia took place in a number of episodes. The original Jurassic back-arc extensional basin in the area has been modified during several periods of compression, oblique-slip and elevation through the late Cretaceous, and Cenozoic. A complex finite geometry has been developed, and maturation and migration histories are significantly different in different sub-areas. On two distinct geologic transverses, the structural interpretation has been studied using forward kinematic reconstruction approach allowing a depth extrapolation of the major structural blocks to be consistent with the surface geology and thermal and paleo-temperature indicators. The area of specific interest is the neighborhood of the Ibague Fault zone, a structure which almost certainly initiated during the initial back-arc rifting and which is usually taken to be the line separating the Upper Magdalena and Middle Magdalena basins. Significant Eocene elevation has occurred south of the fault; north of it a thick Cretaceous shale section reached its peak of hydrocarbon generation in the Paleogene. It was not possible to model the evolution of the local area without extending the scope of the investigation to include a couple of transects from the Llanos across the whole Eastern Cordillera. The Eastern Cordillera seems to have remained a positive area through the Cenozoic, hence its relative immaturity.

Modelamiento Y Análisis Estructural Del Anticlinal De Zipaquirá Y Su Aplicación A La Interpretación A Zonas De Piedemonte
Authors A.J. Lozano, W.J.

Exploring Sub-Basement Traps In The Upper Magdalena Valley Of Colombia
Authors C. Macellari, J. Amaral, J. Salel and M. OsorioThe intramontane Upper Magdalena Basin of Colombia has been actively explored for hydrocarbons and is reaching a mature level of activity. However it has been long suspected that important oil accumulations still remain trapped in structures presently located beneath overthrusted basement rocks. Several attempts in the past were unsuccessful in testing this play concept. The basin has been subjected to several phases of active compression since at least Oligocene times, and it is encroached on both sides by inward verging thrust faults that carry basement rocks of Jurassic and Paleozoic age on top of a Mesozoic-Cenozoic sequence. During the last year, the HOCOL-TEPMA consortium drilled the deepest well to date in the basin to test the sub-basement concept. The Iskana 1A well drilled over 9000 feet of Paleozoic basement rocks and reached a final depth of 17588 feet. The objective Lower Cretaceous sandstone of the Caballos Formation was found oil-bearing close to the prognosed depth. The well encountered a lower section with heavy oil (19º API) and an upper section that produced 29º API oil at noncommercial rates. Iskana proves for the first time the validity of the subthrust play in the area. However it is still uncertain if sealing against basement rocks is an effective trapping mechanism since the structure possibly has some fourway dip closure. Similar structures remain untested along the trend, but important technical challenges need to be solved in order to make this play economically viable.

Modelamiento Estructural 3D Y Aplicaciones En La Exploración Y Explotación De Hidrocarburos En El Cinturón De Cabalgamiento Del Piedemonte Llanero, Cordillera Oriental, Colombia

Geometria Y Cinematica De Micropliegues Del Cretaceo Basal Aplicados A La Interpretación Estructural De Zonas De Piedemonte

The Andean Santander-Oriental Tectonic Syntaxis: A First-Order Pattern Controlling Exploration Play-Model Concepts In Colombia
Authors A. Nevistic, E. Rossello, C. Haring, G. Covellone, F. Bettini, H. Rodríguez, R. Salvay, C. Colo, L. Araque, E. Castro, C. Pinilla and C. BordarampéThe Santander and Oriental ranges form an Andean tectonic syntaxis along the central eastern part of Colombia being its internal compressive occidental compartment constituted by the more competent pre- Mesozoic (as well as the Garzon and Nevado del Cocuy massif). Easterwards this area, regarded as a spur surrounded by the arched Mid-Upper Cretaceous to Tertiary fold and thrust belt which convexity is projected towards the eastern foreland. Due to the oblique ENE Andean convergence on the Pacific border of the South American plate, the northern Santander branch - trending NNW - shows leftlateral transpressive tectonics. Contrastingly, the southern Cordillera Oriental branch - trending SSW - shows right-lateral transpressive tectonics. The interaction with the foreland exhibits a fold and thrust belt with relevant wrenching expressed by en-echelon multi-scalar structures. At present, the Mesozoic and Tertiary depocenters are dismembered by the action of this first-order pattern tectonics into several relictic isolated portions. These basin segments show different local structural geometries depending on their relationships with the major extensional pre-Tertiary as well as their Andean reactivation and inversion structures. This tectonic pattern difficults the traditional geometrical balancing of conceptual section across the entire Andean cordilleras and affects the petroleum system models improving reservoir and migration conditions of the diverse plays along the main tectonic corridors.

Structural Style, Sequence And Timing In The Acevedo Block: Implications For Subthrust Exploration In The Upper Magdalena Valley
Authors G. Rait, I. Dawes, T.D.J. England and G.W. PaukertThe Upper Magdalena Valley is bounded on the west and east by thrust faults that carry 'basement' lithologies: Precambrian metamorphics (Garzon Gneiss) or Mesozoic igneous and volcano-sedimentary rocks (Saldaña Fm. et al.). Many prospects drilled beneath these basement overthrusts have failed because trap geometries were not as prognosed. To improve our prognoses of these subthrust structures (and avoid becoming "Saldaña victims") we need not only better seismic imaging but also a better understanding of how the basin-bounding thrust systems evolved. The Acevedo Block lies on the eastern side of the southern Upper Magdalena basin. Subthrust prospects have been identified beneath the Garzon-Suaza fault system, which forms the western edge of the Eastern Cordillera there. Seismic, geological mapping, and thermochronometric studies show that the lowest basement-carrying thrust is relatively steep and has a small displacement, that the thrust system developed 'out-of-sequence', and that most of the structural development - on both sides of the valley - occurred during the Neogene. In addition, depth conversion of the seismic and the geology to the south show that the subthrust block is a planar, gently northwest-dipping panel >15 km across. The important result for local exploration is that the trap geometry is not an anticline beneath a shallow, fartravelled basement sheet - as would be implied by restoring a 'piggy-back' thrust sequence - but is a dipping panel that terminates updip against basement. It is possible that similar traps exist elsewhere along the margins of the Upper Magdalena Valley.

2D And 3D Structural Balancing In A Deformed Foreland Basin, Peruvian Subandean Belt
Authors D.R. Richards, S.J. Calvert and H. YamamotoThe Camisea area in southern Peru has yielded several large discoveries in structural traps. 2D and 3D structural modeling and balancing are key to understanding the hydrocarbon discovery potential of this area, as well as evaluating specific prospects. In order to evaluate the potential of this sub-basin for new hydrocarbon discoveries, regionally consistent and balanced 2D structural sections set the framework for 3D visualization and balancing. Well and surface data also constrained the 3D model. The process of building a 3D model enhanced understanding of the structural development and hence the hydrocarbon potential of the basin. The process began with depth converting, consistently reinterpreting and balancing lines in 2D. The reinterpreted and balanced 2D sections provided a much improved understanding of potential trap volumes. The process of building the 3D model provided insights on fault linkages, terminations and timing of deformation in the region. Map view restoration of a key horizon yielded a consistent kinematic system for the deformation. The kinematic system is in accordance with the distinct strike of the two limbs (in map view) of the fold and thrust belt. The result of the balancing, modeling and structural analysis is a comprehensive and valid 3D model of the structural history and geometry. Hydrocarbon exploration in onshore frontier basins often focuses on reinterpreting subsurface data of a below average standard. Structural balancing in 2D and 3D provide reliable input for basin modeling, as well as an understanding of the regional structural framework and geometry.

Thrust Kinematics Of The Tangara/Mundo Nuevo Area: New Insight From Apatite Fission Track Analysis
More LessTangara & Mundo Nuevo blocks are located in the Llanos Foothills northeast of Bogota which are mainly structured by thrust related folds. New seismic, new structural field data, and new burial computation allowed us to revise the tectono-sedimentary history of the area and to propose a new sequential deformation modeling based on balanced cross sections. Burial history of the area has been interpreted using new AFTA and new maturity data. Thicknesses of Carbonera and Guayabo Fms computed as well as measured in seismic and wells show significant E-W variations. Seismic evidences of progressive unconformities within the Carbonera Fm. underline a Pre-Guayabo structuration. This pre Midddle-Miocene deformation stage could have controlled the formation of a slightly folded belt involving Cretaceous and younger series and probably linked with an early inversion of the Lower Cretaceous rift basin. Guayabo foreland basin system appears to have been controlled by an active thrust wedge represented by the internal structures now outcropping in the Mundo Nuevo block which are consistent with a minor burial (<300 m) below the molasse sequence. Thicknesses of Guayabo Fm. (2400-1700 m.) computed in Tangara block indicate a more distal foreland environment but remain lesser that the Guayabo Fm. thickness measured in the present day Llanos foreland (3100m) which is completely overthrusted by the external fault. Because of lack of high resolution ages within the Guayabo Fm., we used the sedimentation rate to propose that this significant difference of burial indicates that the external structures were also active before the Pleistocene.

Evolución Estructural Del Flanco Oriental Del Valle Superior Del Magdalena Y Su Implicación En La Carga De Hidrocarburos

Role Of Extensional Structures In The Development Of The Middle Magdalena Valley Basin – Colombia
More LessThe MMVB was developed through different tectonic stages related with the interaction of the tectonic plates at the Northwestern corner of South America. During Jurassic and early Cretaceous the MMVB went through rift stage that evolved to an aulacogen. Many of the structures related with the extensional phase of the MMVB were modified after the Tertiary tectonics, however the rift structures in the northern portion of the basin are still well preserved. The northern part of the MMVB is a monocline dipping toward the southeast that represents a half graben inside the rift. The monocline structure is dipping south-eastern, as is the direction, where isopach contours thicken. Most of the structures present at the area are normal and reverse faults of variable vergence, oriented in northeast-southwest direction. Kinematics of the rift seemed to be rotational during the syn-rift accumulation and non-rotational during post-rift sedimentation. Most of the faults remaining the rift structure were inverted after compressional tectonics that started at Late Cretaceous. According the model proposed by Hayward and Graham (1989), inversion seemed to be mild in the northern MMVB area. Transpresion caused by the oblique collision of the Western Cordillera, added a strike-slip component to the reactivation process, through the clockwise rotation of the blocks.

The Occurrence Of Shear-Torn Palynomacerals In Middle To Early Late Devonian Strata Of Southern Subandean Bolivia: Their Geological Significance
More LessPalynomacerals damaged by shear, displaying characteristic tension gashes (subparallel tearing pattern), are reported from Middle to early Late Devonian shales of the Los Monos Formation, in the subsurface of Southern Subandean Bolivia. Shear has affected not only marine and terrestrial palynomorphs (trilete spores, organic-walled microphytoplankton, chitinozoans) but also land-derived phytoclasts. Sheartorn palynomorphs have been previously recorded in oilproducing sedimentary basins of Brazil. Here, their origin was attributed to faulting because of the following facts: (1) the shear-torn palynomorphs were recovered from wells drilled in areas infested by growth faults; (2) they occur mainly in Albian to Paleogene strata that immediately overlie the Aptian salt, and thus are severely affected by salt tectonics; (3) the subparallel tearing pattern of palynomorphs is suggestive of deforming processes that took place when the host sediment was still in a rather plastic (partly unconsolidated) state. In the investigated Los Monos sections, several samples present a considerable proportion of the palynomacerals sheared to varied degrees. The frequency of shear-torn palynomacerals is especially high in middle to upper parts of the formation. This suggests that thrusting, faulting and other deformation processes could have affected more plastic (pelitic) strata in those intervals. Tectonic disturbances of the normal stratal succession are not always distinguished on the basis of strictly biostratigraphic evidence. However, other apparent palynological anomalies (involving abrupt changes in composition, nature and/or preservation of the organic residues) occur in different intervals of the investigated wells. Some of these match intervals where palynomorph shear becomes more frequent and intense, thus pointing out to possible tectonic controls. Other palynological anomalies, dissociated from shear-torn palynomorphs, are more probably related to faciological causes.

The Agrio Fold And Thrust Belt: Structural Analysis And Its Relationship With The Petroleum System Vaca Muerta-Agrio-Troncoso Inferior (!), Argentina
More LessThe structural style of the Agrio Fold and Thrust belt of the Neuquén Basin, Argentina, is characterized by = the insertion of basement tectonic wedges into the sedimentary column that deform pre-existing thinskinned triangle zones; constituting a multi-episodic orogen. Based on the revision of regional geologic data and carefull analysis of cross-cutting field relationships it can be determined that the upper limit of the beginning of the Andean deformation of the Agrio FTB, given by the extrusive rocks of the Colipilli-Cayanta Fm., corresponds to the Lower to Middle Eocene. These units are intruding and covering the previously formed structures. Other authors lower this age down to the Senonian (Upper Cretaceous) and it would be manifested by the unconformity between the Rayoso Fm and the Neuquén Group. Within the study area, the cross-cutting field relationships may lower this age up to Cerro Lisandro Mb. (88 Ma?); with another reactivation pulse at the Lower to Middle Miocene (18-12 Ma). These evidence allow to adjust the timing relationship to the critical moment of the petroleum system (Upper Cretaceous) Vaca Muerta-Agrio-Troncoso Inferior; contrarily to conclusions of previous studies that showed only one uplift event of Miocene age. The application of new structural models, together with the change in the timing relationship promotes the study of new exploratory leads for liquid hydrocarbons. Finally a new regional correlation for the Tertiary in this area of the Agrio Fold and Thrust belt is proposed.

Petroleum Systems And Tectono-Stratigraphic Evolution Of The Madre De Dios Basin And Its Associated Thrustbelt In Peru And Bolivia
Authors A. Aleman, D. Valasek, C. Ardiles, G. Wood, G. Wahlman and J. GrovesDespite the presence of a widespread Late Devonian world-class source rocks (up to 16 % TOC), the Madre de Dios Foreland Basin and associated fold and thrust belt is one of the most under-explored Subandean basins. Detailed biostratigraphic studies have confirmed similarities to the tectonic stratigraphic evolution of the southern Ucayali Basin. Oils and source rock correlations indicate at least three distinct source rocks. These include mixed Type I/II Devonian (Frasnian Famennian) world-class source rock, units from the Mississippian Ambo Group, and the Late Permian Ene Formation. Devonian source rocks have a variable thickness, richness, and regional distribution. Hydrocarbon generation commenced during the late Cretaceous in the deepest part of the basin and has continued to the present time at the basin margin. Several stacked Devonian and Carboniferous reservoir and seal pairs are present. Reservoir quality improves northward and eastward away from the preserved foredeep. The main migration carriers are sandstones interfingered with or overlying the Devonian source rocks. Interbedded Pennsylvanian to Permian evaporites in the carbonate sequence represent the regional seal, which stratigraphically restricts upward hydrocarbon migration Potential stratigraphic traps with good seismic amplitude anomalies are present along the Manu Arch and may also exist along the eastern peripheral bulge. Thrust loading was hindered by the crystalline Madidi Arch, which operated as buttresses for foreland thrust propagation and also inhibited faulting along the poorly developed peripheral bulge. The peripheral bulge may exhibit significant faulting and could be the site of potential structural traps as the arch plunges northwestward and turned westward. Progressive eastward migration of the oil kitchen is associated with episodic thrust sheet propagation and coeval molasse deposition. The fold and thrustbelt petroleum system is more complex and may involve younger Permo- Carboniferous source rocks. Peak oil generation took place prior to the Quechua Phase of Andean deformation in subthrust synclines kitchens. As a result, most of the structures are charged with gas and condensate. North of the Madidi Arch, there is potential for additional oil kitchens in subthrust synclines. Because of the complex duplex style, large thrust displacement, and intricate paleo-burial history documented in the Candamo-1X well, reservoir quality is a crucial issue for liquid hydrocarbons. However, reservoir quality may improve north of the Madidi Arch where is preserved along the frontal thrusts that carry older units in the hanging wall. Good pressure seals in the Cretaceous Chonta Formation and Lower Tertiary shales are also documented in the Candamo-1X discovery as well as in the Camisea trend.

Petroleum System Characterization, Sinu Area (Offshore, Colombia)
Authors J. Amaral, N. Crepieux, D. Levache, E. Cauquil, B. Mouly and C. OsorioDuring the last decades different oil companies have evaluated and explored the petroleum potential of the offshore Colombian Caribbean margin (Atlantic Ocean). The last evaluation campaign was performed by Total during 2001 and 2002 by integrating the most recent available technologies and techniques to acquire and interpret data on deep waters (400-3000 m water depth) of Sinu block. The petroleum system study on the Sinu area was focussed on the determination of a possible hydrocarbons generative system (presence and extension) and on the prediction of fluid quality (origin & maturity) inside of the prospects. The characterization study of Sinu block was carried out in several steps: 1. Integration of available 2D seismic data and acquisition of bathymetric campaign in the area to optimize the coring measurement points in the area. Figure 1 - Location of Sinu Area 2. Acquisition and data analysis of heat flow measurements and seabed piston coring to characterize the present conditions and sampling the hydrocarbon shows. 3. Integration of data results and run of basin modeling using 1D (Genex) and 2D (Temis) to characterize the extension, timing, maturity and the petroleum systems in the area. The referred studies put in evidence the existence of a generative Tertiary gas petroleum system in the offshore area. A Cretaceous oil prone system remained hypothetical in the Sinu accretional prism. The seal prospect efficiency appears to be a critical point for the prospectivity in this area, considering the mud diapirism and overpressures.

Authors H. Belotti, G. Conforto, J. Silvestro, J. Rodriguez and P. KraemerLa actividad exploratoria realizada por Pecom Energía S.A.

Hydrocarbon Habitat In Southern Ucayali Basin, Perú
Authors I. Brisson, M. Ayala, L. Anzulovich, O. Jofre, S. Corsico and S. SciamannaWe revisited the stratigraphy, structure and petroleum geology over an area of about 60,000 km2 in the Ucayali basin, Peru, integrating the work minutely done during the last years over a region that was once perceived as one of the most promising sub-Andean basins after the giant Camisea discovery. This paper presents the integration of the analysis on biostratigraphy, sedimentology, geochemistry and wells, along with a pervasive mapping over compiled, reprocessed and acquired seismic that allowed us to reconstruct the pretty complex geological history of the study area that ranges from the early Paleozoic to the late Tertiary. Three proven and one speculative petroleum systems are present in this basin: the oil prone Jurassic/Cretaceous system - restricted to the north -, the gas/light oil prone early Carboniferous -Paleozoic system, the oil prone early Permian- Paleozoic/Cretaceous system and finally the speculative Devonian-Paleozoic system. We performed 1D, seriated 2D and a 2½ dimension basin modeling to address the main processes controlling the efficiency of the Ucayali petroleum system, investigating the relations between startigraphic, tectonic overburden and the viability of long lateral versus short hydrocarbons migration mechanism. We analyzed the petroleum occurrences and the prospect failures to characterize the main play concepts of the Andean front and the basin border to determine the critical play element in the area and highlight the future exploration potential of the area.

Hábitat De Hidrocarburos En El Pie De La Sierra De La Faja Corrida Subandina, Cuenca De Tarija. Area De Santa Cruz, Bolivia
Authors C.E. Cruz, C. Mombrú, A. Cangini, C. Seguí and J. ContiThree previously unproductive reservoirs in the region lying between the Parapetí River and the Santa Cruz de la Sierra city, have recently been successfully tested by Pluspetrol S.A. The tectonic setting of these gas discoveries is the Foothills of the Subandean Thrustbelt of the Tarija Basin. The Tajibos success is a four-way closure anticline linked to the Emergent Thrust Front where the gas is lodged in the lowermost Tertiary Petaca fluvial sandstones. The Tacobo gentle ramp related anticline, produced outstanding gas rates from Lower Devonian Huamampampa fractured quartzite sandstones. The latter trend bears a notable amplitude anomaly but in a different structural level. There, the Curiche well tested gas from Tertiary Chaco fluvial ephemeral sandstones. The Río Seco structure is a fault propagation fold with a gas accumulation in the Upper Carboniferous Escarpment peri-glacial fluvial sandstones, discovered by YPFB in past decades. Non-commercial gas was tested here from Mid Devonian Iquiri shelf stormy sandstones. The gases form a group that has similar characteristics with minor differences that have been interpreted to be generated by the same source rock section, according to geochemistry evaluation and gas isotope data. Faults are considered to be the main migration pathway, since the hydrocarbons are trapped in different reservoirs and structural levels. During the last four years, the use of technology and 3D seismic as key elements of an important exploratory effort, led to the discovery of these gas accumulations that amount almost 1 TCFG recoverable reserves.

Áreas Con Mayor Potencial De Carga De Petróleo: Cuenca Valle Medio Del Magdalena (Vmm) Y Occidente De La Cordillera Oriental, Colombia

Evaluación Del Riesgo De Carga De Hidrocarburos A Través De La Integración De Nuevas Tecnologías De Modelamiento De Cuencas Y Métodos Tradicionales De Exploración

Caracterizacion De Crudos De La Subcuenca De Barinas, Venezuela: Cromatografia De Gases De Alta Temperatura Y De Crudo Total

Geología Estructural De La Zona De Yaguara-Palermo, Piedemonte De La Cordillera Central Con Valle Superior Del Magdalena, Colombia

Thermogenic Hydrocarbon Processes In The Guajira Basin- A Petroleum Systems Approach
Authors V. Ramirez, A. Rangel and R. HernandezThermogenic processes in the Guajira Basin, some with the potential of generate liquid hydrocarbons evidenced by recent geochemical and geological works, are reflected in at least four petroleum systems. These petroleum systems, provide a framework for exploration opportunities in northern Colombia. Macarao - Siamana P.S. (.): source rocks in the Eocene Macarao Fm. and reservoirs in the Siamana Fm, as proven towards the northeast part of the basin (Santa Ana area). Tertiary - Jimol/Uitpa P.S. (.): source rock in the Middle-Upper Miocene Castilletes Fm (thermally inmature), for biogenic gas. For the thermogenic hydrocarbon, the source rock is a thermally mature unit (Siamana or Macarao Fm). Reservoir rocks are the Lower Miocene Uitpa and Jimol Fms, producing in the Chuchupa-Ballena fields. Castilletes-Castilletes P.S. (?): source rock in the Middle to Upper Miocene Castilletes Fm, with reservoir potential in minor clastic developments. Mesozoic-Cretaceous P.S. (?): source rock in the La Luna-Cogollo Fms present to the east and northeast of the basin, with remnant potential in the Jurassic Cuiza Shale (Cosinas ridge area). Reservoirs would be fractured Cretaceous limestones, following analogy with Mara-La Paz Venezuelan fields. Hitherto the Guajira Basin has been regarded as a biogenic gas province, with a single petroleum system (some 6000 BCF of dry gas, 97% methane). Geochemical and geological data evidence that thermogenic processes are relevant in the evolution of the basin.. Therefore, in addition to the prolific gas character of these part of Colombia, an oil accumulation potential should be considered in the appraissal of its prospectivity.

Basin Modeling In Complex Area: Example From Venezuela
By F. SchneiderThe main focus of this study is to understand the porosity reduction and therefore the origin of the paleofluids in the late Cretaceous-Oligocene sandstone reservoirs of the El Furrial structure (Venezuela). Basin modelling was performed using Thrustpack, Locace and Ceres tools. Temperature and nature of the fluids obtained by this modelling were compared to fluid inclusions and oxygen isotope data on quartz overgrowth. Four steps should be considered in this area. (1) from -65 to -20 Ma: fluids were at thermal equilibrium with the sediments. They were continuously expelled vertically toward the surface during compaction-driven dewatering processes. (2) from -20 to -12 Ma: As a result of the regional tilting and the deposition of the synflexural Naricual Formation, the Cretaceous and Oligocene sandstones of the El Furrial structure became efficient conducts for fluids circulating from the north. These fluids (squeegee 1) were at thermal equilibrium with the Cretaceous and Oligocene sandstones and seem to be correlated with the first generation of quartz overgrowths. This episode is characterised by an increase of the overpressure in the Oligocene and Upper Cretaceous sandstones correlated with an hydraulic fracturing of the sealing Carapita black shales. (3) From -12 to -8 Ma: Fluids were expelled laterally from the Cretaceous sediments of the Pirital hangingwall unit located immediately north of the El Furrial structure (Squeegee 2 ). These fluids were likely in chemical disequilibrium and their temperature was higher than the temperature of adjacent sediments, that probably resulted in additional, but minor, episodes of quartz precipitation. This hypothesis is consistent with the information obtained from oxygen isotope analyses, which suggest that subsequent generations of quartz cement probably formed from evolved basinal fluids. (4) A reduction of the intensity of the flow and then an inversion of this flow mark the sealing of the southern structural closure of the structure at around -8 Ma. Then the closure of the northern flank occurs at around -5 Ma as indicated by a present velocity of the fluids close to zero in the El Furrial reservoirs and the filling of the structure by the hydrocarbons.

Predicción De Propiedades Petrofísicas De La Formación Caballos En El Campo Puerto Colón-Putumayo, A Partir De Inversión Sísmica Para Impedancia Acústica Y Shear

Reservoir Description Using Hybrid Seismic Inversion: A 3D Case Study From Maria Ines Oeste Field, Argentina
Authors M. Benabentos, S. Mallick, M. Sigismondi and J. SoldoIn this paper, we apply hybrid seismic inversion on a three-dimensional (3D) seismic data set from María Inés Oeste, an oil and gas field in Argentina. The María Inés sandstones are Paleocene in age, the traps are mainly structural, and the reservoir is about 50 m thick, containing either oil or gas. These oil/gas-bearing sands usually cause anomalously high amplitude brightspots on the stacked seismic data. These brightspots were generally used as hydrocarbon indicators for this area. Drilling through these bright-spots has resulted in pay, as well as many dry wells. Hybrid seismic inversion, a combination of prestack waveform inversion and poststack inversions of some amplitude-variation-with-offset (AVO) attributes, allowed us to demonstrate that the Poisson's ratio, obtained from this hybrid inversion was effective in fluid discrimination and provided successful drilling locations. We also demonstrate that the Poisson's ratio contrast; obtainable from a standard AVO is not as effective in fluid discrimination as the one from hybrid inversion.

Strike Line Methodology As An Optimization To Exploring In Fold And Thrust Belts
Authors B. Blake, D. Figueroa, A. Otero, R. Maceda and W. PrayitnoExploring in the Argentina-Bolivia sub-Andean Belt, we routinely use a strike line methodology to optimize the seismic acquisition effort and improve subsurface imaging. The main component of this methodology is to divide the exploration effort into two phases. In the first phase, we shoot a regional strike line along the backlimb of a fold (as defined by the surface geology). We have found that seismic data has the best signal to noise ratio in these Tertiary valleys, where the terrain is also least severe. During the second phase we shoot dip lines, and usually a forelimb strike line, over any apparent culmination identified on the backlimb strike line. In this way we avoid unnecessary acquisition in the most expensive and worst data terrain. In defining a prospect, we have developed a circular interpretation process of creating balanced crosssections, forward modeling the seismic response, and choosing those models that best fit the real seismic. This process constrains and validates the structural interpretation but does not produce a unique solution. Interpretations are completed on non-migrated stack data on all lines since this is the only domain in which the strike and dip lines tie. The time structures are mapmigrated which shifts the location of the culmination spatially and collapses their size. The end result is a depth map that honors all geologic and geophysical data. The strike line methodology improves data quality and reduces overall exploration cost. We believe it to be a very efficient method for prospect generation.

Prospect Evaluation Methodology Of Structure Trap In Subandean Basin, Bolivia
Authors P. Bonillo, W. Prayitno and T. ZapataIn the present work, a previously defined prospect in the Bolivian south sub-Andean basin is re-evaluated. A preliminary interpretation based only on seismic data defined an apparently interesting prospect. A posterior revision of the area, applying a different methodology, based on a interactive combination of seismic and structural data, obtained a different interpretation. The applied methodology basically consists on the interpretation of the unambiguous data in the seismic, conversion to depth and matching to the surface structural data. Structural criteria were used for reconstruction the parts where seismic is ambiguous or with no data. After the reconstructed cross-section is balanced, a ray tracing analysis is applied to check whether the interpretation is consistent or not with the strike seismic line on the backlimb of the structure. The process is repeated on all the 2D time seismic lines obtaining 2D structure balanced depth sections. With these 2D structure sections, a 3D structural model is built and restored using 3DMove software. The resulting structure map of the prospect is deeper than previous interpretation. An implication of reconstructing the whole area, not only mapping the crest of the traps but also syncline area, made possible to model the hydrocarbon generation of the fetch area. The result of 1D Basin modeling indicated that the source rock in the fetch area only have small amount of hydrocarbon generation. The analysis shows that this prospect have more economic risk than previously thought.

Eastward Extent Of The Late Eocene-Early Oligocene Onset Of Deformation Across The Northern Andes: Constraints From The Northern Portion Of The Eastern Cordillera Fold Belt, Colombia, And Implications For Regional Oil Exploration
By F. CorredorNew geologic information supports the interpretation for the initiation of tectonic uplift in the eastern margin of the Eastern Cordillera of Colombia and the onset of deformation across the northern Andes during the Late Eocene-Early Oligocene. The eastern edge of Late Eocene-Early Oligocene deformation was located at the present location of the eastern margin of the Eastern Cordillera. This uplift can be linked to the tectonic events already described in the literature for the western margin of the Eastern Cordillera. Based on the interpretation of geologic maps, a new regional balanced cross-section across the region, seismic reflection profiles, remote sensing images, and biostratigraphic data, three major deformation events are invoked to describe the evolution of this fold belt. A first event is interpreted to have occurred early during the Late Eocene-Early Oligocene, forming a northeast-vergent imbricate system. This imbricate system was eroded and covered by Upper Oligocene deposits, forming a major angular unconformity. A subsequent compressional event in Miocene-Pliocene times (Andean Orogeny) reactivated pre-existing thrust faults and created new ones that re-folded those formed during the earlier event. These younger thrust faults also offset and folded the angular unconformity. Finally, a more recent tectonic event has re-folded all the structures from the previous events. The complex imbricate system of the northeastern margin of the Eastern Cordillera of Colombia can be linked to a foot-wall shortcut of the inverted Servita Fault that was formed during the Late Eocene-Recent inversion of a Jurassic-Cretaceous extensional basin. A better understanding of the complex structural history of the eastern margin of the Eastern Cordillera of Colombia is critical when evaluating the real potential for oil exploration in this region.

Making The Difference:A Story Of Pitfalls And Successes In Seismic Imaging In A Thrust Belt Environment
Authors C. Estrada and J. JaramilloSince 1989, BP Exploration Colombia (BPXC) has acquired extensive 2D and 3D seismic, and over 30 vertical seismic profiles in the Llanos Foothills in Colombia. In these 15 years BPXC has focused on continuously improving imaging to meet the needs of different stages of development, as well as to operate in structurally more complex areas. The result has been a process of incessant learning in the acquisition, processing, and interpretation of seismic in a thrust belt environment. This paper summarizes a series of imaging pitfalls and success stories in the Foothills, as well as the different tools that have been tested to address the ever-increasing needs of exploration and production.

No Drilling Surprises Process And The Value Of The Real Time Update, A Case History In Camisea / Peru
Authors M. Frydman, J. Palacio, D. Lee, G. Pidcock, R. Delgado and J. CassanelliDrilling wells in Camisea is technically and economically challenging. Wellbore instability, in this area, is responsible for costly stuck pipe incidents and in some cases multiple sidetracks. Stuck pipe is responsible for lost bottom hole assembly (BHA) and considerable non-productive time (NPT) spent freeing pipe, requiring additional wiper trips and hole cleaning. Minimizing nonproductive time associated with wellbore instability reduces the risk of major and catastrophic incidents and is required to complete the well on time and within budget. This article will describe the application of a process used to reduce risks and cost while drilling in Camisea, Peru. The mechanical earth model concept (MEM) will be presented. It will be shown that building a mechanical earth model and identifying the drilling risks during the well planning phase and revising it in real time is extremely valuable in delivering complex wells safely while minimizing unplanned well construction costs. Comparison of the MEM with actual events will be presented, and the importance of early detection and revising the model while drilling is stressed. Drilling in a difficult area requires geomechanics, drilling expertise, teamwork, good data management and excellent communications among the service companies and the client. This team effort in Camisea represented a considerable reduction in cost compared to an offset well.

Aspectos Sociales Y Ambientales De La Tecnica Sparse 3D. Bloque Tangara Colombia

Implantación De Una Barrera Artificial (Bottom Screen Out) Para Controlar El Crecimiento Vertical De Una Fractura Hidráulica, Realizada En Un Pozo Exploratorio

Imaging Of The Guando Field Colombia In Time And Depth
Authors M.A. Hall, V. Avramovic, J. Basick, I. Novianti, D. Maucione, P. Kroshko and J.C. GarzónThe Guando field is in an area of rough topography and complex geology. In order to better site wells in such fields it is of value to have a sound understanding of this geological complexity. Obtaining a satisfactory seismic image to enable such interpretation requires pre-stack imaging. The geological complexity is such that post stack imaging fails due to the failure of the common mid point assumption. Is it sufficient to perform pre-stack time migration or is it necessary to perform pre-stack depth migration? In this instance both have been performed on this field and results for each of them will be shown. The basic theory of both pre-stack time and pre-stack depth migration will be described without using mathematics. Model data will then be used to illustrate the shortcomings of pre-stack time migration using a model of similar geological complexity to the Guando field. Both pre-stack migrations require a velocity field. These differ and the manner of their derivation also differs. Velocity model building for both techniques will be described. Particular emphasis will be placed on the use of tomographic and scanning techniques for pre-stack depth migration. Examples will be shown of the velocity models from both migrations. It will be shown that the pre-stack depth migration velocity model is also a valuable interpretation asset. Data from both migrations will be shown. These will demonstrate the superiority of the pre-stack depth migrated data and the reasons why it is superior.

Herramienta Sistematizada Para Preservar La Heterogeneidad De Los Yacimientos En Modelos Escalados

Aplicaciones De La Tecnica De Microsonda Electronica De Rayos-X (EPMA) Al Estudio De Rocas Madres

Single-Sensor Towed Streamer Acquisition: A Case Study From The Gulf Of Mexico
Authors P. Muñoz, J. Uribe and N. MoldoveanuThe new generation of towed streamer acquisition has been developed recently that is based on single sensor recording, a calibrated marine source, a new acoustic positioning method of the receivers and a new cable steering system. The single-sensor marine acquisition technology enables the acquisition of pointreceiver towed streamer data at 3.125 m sampling interval and this has opened the possibility to develop new methods for attenuation of the marine seismic noise. The fine sampling of the seismic data contributes also to increase the seismic resolution, both vertically and horizontally, and to improve the amplitude accuracy of the recorded data. Calibrated air gun seismic source uses the source signature estimation system to measure the output wavelet of the gun array for every shot and this has an impact on removing the source output variability from shot to shot and to perform a more accurate deterministic designature deconvolution. The new acoustic positioning system improves the accuracy of the seismic measurements and together with the new streamer steering system, improves the repeatability of the seismic experiment. In this paper it will be presented applications of this new acquisition technology for reservoir development and 4D seismic from the Gulf of Mexico and the North Sea.

Imaging Seismic Data With High Resolution Gravity Data
By R. OpferImaging land seismic data has always required a time or static correction to remove the effect of elevation and time distortions caused by velocity variations in the near surface geology. Elevation or datum corrections are straightforward, although, it will be shown that even elevation corrections can introduce statics that affect the seismic image. Historically, the seismic processors have relied on up-hole information or methods using the attributes of the seismic data itself to image the deeper reflectors. These methods include hand static corrections, auto correlation methods, refraction analysis, and turning wave tomography. This presentation will show how optimally acquired and processed gravity data can provide a very accurate, often superior, static correction which is computed independently of the seismic data by the invertion of the high frecuency residual gravity data into a surface consistent static correction. It will also be shown how gravity data can provide missing information in the refraction model, how gravity data resolves statics in areas of high velocity weathering over low velocity sub-weathering where the refraction model teoretically faults and how this technology automatically compensates for velocity variations in the weathering and sub-weathering layers including statics introduced by topography. This technology is known as GravStat and has been used for 2D and 3D seismic statics corrections.

Seismic Acquisition And Processing For Sub-Thrust Imaging And Prospecting, Suaza Valley, Colombia
Authors G.W. Paukert, G. Billings, I. Dawes, T.D.J. England and G. RaitHigh-velocity basement rocks, comprised of Proterozoic granulites, and Mesozoic metamorphic, andesitic and marine sedimentary rocks have been thrust to surface along low-angle northwest- and southeast-vergent thrust faults in the Acevedo block of Colombia's Suaza Valley in the Upper Magdalena region. Beneath the basement thrust sheets lie oilprospective Cretaceous and Tertiary fluvial-deltaic reservoir sandstones. The complex geometries, nonreflective character and high internal velocities of these basement thrust sheets make it difficult to clearly resolve and accurately position seismic reflections from the stratigraphy beneath them. However, application of high-effort acquisition methods and modern processing streams has allowed sub-thrust imaging and prospect definition. Imaging success is attributed to swath-2D seismic geometries, which were used when shooting above the basement hangingwall. Swath-2D configuration involved four receiver lines and a central 'zig-zag' shotline. Additionally, tomographic statics, pre-stack time migration and anisotropic pre-stack depth migration were all used to obtain optimal imaging and positioning of reflections. Final 2D pre-stack migrated time sections image sub-thrust truncations of reflections from the target Cretaceous Caballos sandstone. Depth mapping delineates a large fault-dependent sub-thrust trap. A 3,000 m sub-thrust well test is scheduled for 2003.

Complex Imbricate Systems In The Southern Caribbean Basin, Offshore Northern Colombia: Advanced Structural And Stratigraphic Analysis, And Implications For Regional Oil Exploration
Authors F. Corredor, J. Shaw and T. VillamilImbricate thrust structures are common in deep-water environments of active margins worldwide, including the Southern Caribbean basin, offshore northern Colombia. The imbricate systems in this region are part of the accretionary prism that resulted from the transpressional collision between the Caribbean and South American plates during Tertiary times. The Southern Caribbean basin offers an extraordinary opportunity to study imbricate thrust systems, as these structures are extremely well imaged at deep levels in seismic reflection profiles and because they preserve growth strata that record fold kinematics. Using fold shape, fault plane reflections, and patterns of growth sedimentation, we model the geometry and kinematics of this imbricate system using combined fault-bend folding and shear fault-bend folding theories. This imbricate system is formed above an Oligocene (?) weak décollement layer of variable thickness at the base of fault ramps. Individual fault-related folds within this imbricate system are characterized by long planar backlimbs that dip less - or much less - than the associated fault ramps, with increasingly shallower dips to growth strata, suggesting a component of progressive limb rotation. Forelimbs are short compared to backlimbs, but growth strata show more consistent dips that suggest a component of folding by kink-band migration. Growth sediments are deposited in piggyback basins formed over the backlimbs of individual imbricates and as onlapping sequences against the forelimbs. The growth stratigraphy consists of distal marine, fine-grained sediments; turbidite deposits, and condense sections. We present forward models of both break-forward and break-backward imbricate shear faultbend fold systems with the correspondent patterns of growth sedimentation derived using high resolution seismic data from similar imbricate systems in the deepwater Niger Delta, West Africa. Unlike conventional imbricate fault-bend folds, break-forward imbricate shear fault-bend folds are characterized by decreasing ramp and dip angles in adjacent thrust sheets toward the hinterland. The decrease in ramp and dip angles, effectively produce an increase in accommodation space for growth sedimentation, and a decrease in the structural relief. We use these models and the resulting patterns of growth stratigraphy to solve the sequences of imbrication in the Southern Caribbean Basin, which are key in the assessment of the exploration potential in this region.

Aplicacion De La Tecnica Sparse En Adquisicion Sismica 3D, Bloque Tangara-Colombia

VSP Por Polarización De Onda: Acabando Con El Descontento Actual

Aplicacion De Metodologias En Tiempo Real Para Optimizar Los Procesos De Perforacion En Yacimientos Petroliferos

Empleo Del Modelo Geomecánico MEM (Mechanical Earth Model) Para Reducir Los Costos Y Riesgos De Perforación En Formaciones Sobre-Presurizadas, Un Caso Histórico Cuenca De Putumayo/Colombia
Authors M. Torres, M. Frydman and H. AriasThe drilling history in this area shows many hole instability problems. It was identified overpressure zones, gas influx zones, huge volume of cavings, lost circulation, cut of mud and many stuck pipe incidents. Wellbore instability was responsible for many costly sidetracks, excessive reaming time and in half of the cases well lost. This article will describe the application of the mechanical earth model concept to reduce risks and cost while drilling in Loro field, Putumayo basin in Colombia. Examples are shown comparing the model with actual results and how the model was updated during drilling. The initial earth model represents the best current description of the state of stress, rock strength and geologic structure as a function of depth in the structure of the field. Using the developed MEM, it was forecasted the wellbore stability for the well plan. This forecast predicts regions where the wellbore is expected to be stabile or unstable, where zones might increase the risk of stuck pipe or heavy reaming as well as places where lost circulation should be anticipated. The forecast is used: to evaluate the proposed casing points and to recommend mud weights required drilling a stable well. In cases where the model predicts wellbore instability cannot be controlled by mud weight, specific drilling fluids and drilling practices are recommended to reduce the risk of stuck pipe. It was drilled the planned well without any important instability problem and with record time for the field, a reduction of 58% in drilling days (from 120 to 50 days). The application of the MEM assured the viability of drilling wells in the area. The use of Geomechanics concepts in the planning phase and while drilling in this area helped in reduce the drilling cost and accelerated the learning curve.

Shushufindi Field: Ecuador's Giant Revisited
More LessShushufindi Field, Ecuador's giant, was discovered by Texaco in 1970 and has already produced over 1 billion barrels of oil from Albian- Cenomanian age fluvio-estuarine and marginal marine sands of the Napo Formation. The structure is a 30-kilometer long anticline bounded to the east by a north-south trending reverse fault. When Shushufindi was returned to Petroproduccion after 20 years of development and production, the field was experiencing significant water breakthrough and there was little documented understanding of the reservoirs and the Field's compartmentalization. Now, nearly 30 years after its discovery, a clear model of the field is emerging.

Caracterización Estocástica De Yacimientos Estratigráficamente Complejos Mediante La Integración De Información Dinámica Del Yacimiento Usando Técnicas De Computación Evolutiva
Authors F.S. González, E.A.

From Frontal Subduction To A Compressional Transform System: New Geophysical Data On The Structure Of The Caribbean-South America Plate Boundary In Southeastern Caribbean
Authors E. Deville, A. Mascle, R. Griboulard, P. Huyghe, C. Padrón de Carillo and J-F. LebrunThe transition between the deformation belt of the east Caribbean active margin and the transform margin of the north of the south America plate develops mostly offshore, east of Trinidad, at the southern edge of the Barbados accretionary prism. The south of the Barbados Ridge constitutes a huge mature accretionary prism where Cretaceous oceanic crust and probably late Jurassic oceanic crust to the south is being subducted below the Caribbean plate with a relative plate motion between South America and the Caribbean plate at a rate of about 2 cm/year, in an E-W direction. The CARAMBA marine survey conducted in this hinge area, in January 2002, onboard the French O/V Atalante, provided about 60 000 km2 of multibeam data acquired together with more than 5000 km of high resolution seismic reflection data and 3.5 kHz sediment penetrator data. These new constraints on the structure and the deformation processes of this area show that approaching the South America continental margin, the Orinoco River and delta clastics influxes develop on both the flexured continental margin and the compressional accretionary complex. The multibeam and seismic data show linear ramp anticlines developing at the leading edge of the prism, while a more complex arrangement of shorter, discontinuous folds is apparent at the southern lateral border of the prism. Notably, at the deformation front of the southernmost part of the prism, the fold-&- thrust system vanished out toward the south with enechelon geometry. Normal listric faults as well as active E-W dextral strike-slip faults with mega-tension gashes deforming the sea bottom are obvious to the south at the vicinity of the South America Margin. Also, the survey spectacularly evidences that a large active belt of mud volcanoes and shale diapirs is widely developed in the area and extends SW, in the onshore Trinidad. These mud volcanoes are well developed along ramp anticlines and on top of sigmoid rises of shale diapirs.

Building A Discrete Fracture Network Based On The Deformation History: A Case Study From The Guaduas Field, Colombia
Authors A. Kloppenburg, J.C. Alzate and G. RodríguezProduction from a limestone reservoir in the Guaduas Field west of Bogotá, Colombia is largely from fractures. It carries high risk as the fracture network, as observed from limited well data, is spatially erratic and not well understood. To predict the fracture pattern, we focus on understanding the present day geometry of the reservoir as well as the change of shape (strain) throughout its geological history. We test and determine parameters for modeling based on the structural development through time, while also matching the fracture distributions in the wells. The parameters derived from these methods allow geologically reasonable prediction of fractures in the areas where there is no data. Four main fracture sets with characteristic orientation are recognized in the wells and confirmed in outcrop studies. The density distributions of the fracture sets correspond with either strain or tectonic thickness maps, and these maps were used to govern the density when building the discrete fracture model. In addition, a late, strike-slip fault system has been identified on the satellite image, on time slices in the seismic survey and in the field. A fracture network was built with length distributions that follow the outcrop observations. Relative connectivity of the fracture network, with the four fracture sets as well as the km-scale strike-slip faults, showed that the latter have an important role in drainage of the system. Fractures with a high risk of being closed due to present day stress were exempted from the network in this analysis.

Paleogeographic Implications Of The Lower Guadalupe (Dura) Formation In The Guando Oil Field, Colombia
Authors D. Leckie, J.M. de Armas, C. du Toit, K. Glazebrook, E. Gómez, P. Kroshko, B. Norris, A. Parsons and R. PeñasNexen Inc. is partner with Petrobras and Ecopetrol in the Guando oil field in the Boqueron Block, Upper Magdalena Valley of Colombia. The field, operated by Petrobras, has an estimated OOIP of 350 mmbbls and is currently producing more than 13,000 bopd from the Cretaceous Lower Guadalupe (Dura Member) Formation. The Lower Guadalupe Formation is ~630 ft thick. The Guando field is a westvergent subthrust play situated in the western foothills of the Eastern Cordillera. The Villeta Formation in the hanging wall overlies and seals westward dipping Guadalupe sands in the footwall of the Boqueron Fault. Source rock is the middle-late Cretaceous Villeta Formation with maximum burial and hydrocarbon generation occurring in deeper synclines. Detailed core analysis shows that the reservoir is a complex interfingering of transgressive and regressive shallow-marine deposits resulting from fluctuating relative sea levels. Field-wide bounding surfaces include wave-ravinement surfaces, tidalravinement surfaces, sequence boundaries; firm grounds revealed by the Glossifungites ichnofacies, and flooding surfaces. Highstand progradational environments include proximal and distal shelf deposits as well as distal offshore marine shales. Highstand deposits are pervasively cemented with syndepositional phosphate. Transgressive environments include tidal-inlet deposits and an estuary-complex facies association; one tidal inlet complex is dominated by micritic carbonate and oyster deposits with minor siliciclastic sandstone facies association. The best reservoirs occur in transgressive tidal inlet and incised valley facies with porosity exceeding 25 %. PSDM processing of the 3D seismic allowed recognition of basal incised valley deposits as well as tear faults. Reservoir permeability is enhanced by a complex naturally occurring fracture system.

Camisea Gas Fields, Peru. First Development And New Technologies Applied
Authors J. Luquez, J. Cruells, F. Seminario, A. Viera, D. Gamez and A. DisalvoPluspetrol Peru Corporation took over the operation of the block 88: Camisea by December 2000. After the environmental impact assessment, the first field operation related to G&G disciplines was the acquisition of 800 km2 of 3D seismic to cover San Martin and Cashiriari structures. The objective was to improve the structural image, delineate the fluid distribution, resolve the internal bed geometry and recognize any reservoir heterogeneity. The field development contemplates the drilling of the wells from only two well pads in each structure. Consequently, these are high-angle extended-reach wells where the wellbore stability assessment has become mandatory on the preparation of the drilling program. Several proved and new technologies were applied in issues as drilling fluids, fracture and pressure gradient analysis and rock mechanical properties feeding a geomechanical model. To follow-up the well operations in such a remote area a real-time data transmission via web page was implemented. All authorized interested personnel from anywhere access all that data. The implemented welltest design resulted in a very precise tool to obtain the better performance of the well. A multi-compositional numerical simulator helps in improving recoveries and anticipates production. Several conceptual models were run to perform sensitivity analyses to different parameters and designs. Finally, with all these new technologies and concepts applied, the obtained results exceeded the expected and gave a good confidence to the future field performance. The first well San Martin-1001 was spuded on July 15th, 2002 reaching the final depth of 3002 mMD in 75 days with an offset of 1500 m. The Absolute Open Flow was estimated in 470 MMscfD of Gas.

Remaining Oil Accumulations In Northern Marañon Basin. A Complex History Entrapment Of Oils
Authors W.I. Martínez Cabañas and M. Erquiaga AguirreTo the north east of block 1AB, there is a large portion of the basin that has remained relatively unexplored due to negative outcomes of the first exploration wells drilled in the area. However, recent exploration activity (late 90´s) resulted in three small discoveries that have brought light to this remote part of the basin demystifying the previous negative perceptions above this area. The present study intends to reveal the significance of the complex distribution of oils encountered in the area, and supports the possibility of mid-light oil accumulations at the northeast of block 1AB.

Campo Guando, Primer Descubrimiento De La Antesala Del Siglo XXI En El Valle Superior Del Magdalena, Colombia

Campo Libertador, Cuenca Oriente, Ecuador; Existen Más Reservas Por Recuperar?

More LessThe Mesozoic assigned silicoclastic sediments of Southern Ucayali Basin held, up to now, the most important Gas acumulation in Peru. The integration of surface and sub-surface data provided by recent wells (logs, cores and cutting samples) and 3D seismic acquired in the block 88, allowed to create sequence stratigraphic and reservoir model. Throughout the seismostratigraphic analysis, not less than four third-order depositional sequences were defined in the studied interval. Local and regional unconformities limit these units. A strong tectonic control is identified in the sedimentation of the lower sequences. This tectonic generated NNE-SSW narrow depocenters that contrast with the WNW-ESE predominant orientation of the Tertiary Andean structures. Sedimentary models that allow the prediction of the sandy bodies geometry were constructed. Besides, cores and cutting microscopic analyses also help the identification of the reservoir petrophysical variations. The obtained results give key data to properly characterize the reservoir as flow units and help in definition of future borehole location.

Lote 88 “ Camisea”. Geometria Y Origen De Las Trampas De Gas. Cuenca De Ucayali. Este De Peru
Authors A. Disalvo, M. Arteaga and J. Chung ChingEl Lote 88, "Camisea", is located in the outer Subandean Thrust Belt of the Ucayali Basin, eastern Perú. The structural style is thin-skinned with the lower detachment placed in the Silurian shale. The deformation took place during the tertiary Andean Orogeny. The dominant structures are several kilometers length ramp anticlines. These structures are WNW-ESE trended and around a thousand meters of structural height. These anticlines, that are the main hydrocarbon traps, are interpreted to be generated either by a simple thrust or by a complex thrust system. Altough minor faults propagation anticlines and interference structures are present, they are not important as hydrocarbons traps. The already found hydrocarbon traps are gas filled to their spill points with no oil ring. They belong to Class I in Sales´s Classification. The final geometry of the traps are due to the combination of four main factors: 1.-The original fault bend anticlines geometry. 2.- The imbrications of two o more faults. 3.-Several minor out-of-sequence and accommodation faults developed in the crest of the anticlines. 4.- Sedimentary and stratigraphic elements that generate a NNW-SSE hills and valleys, regularly trended, separated 2 - 3 km each and more than 30 Km in length. These features, with more than 100 m relief, are superimposed to the main geometry deformation.

The Gibraltar Case Study, Northern Llanos Foothills, Colombia. Success Of A Complex Technical Business In Complicated Environments
Authors T. Villamil, J. Muñoz, J. Sanchez, J.J. Aristizabal, J. Velasco, A. Fajardo, P.E. Luna, A. Mantilla, L.E. Peña, M.G. Paz, O. Silva, E. Sanchez, N.S. Meza, J. Martinez, L.A. Pachon and E. GallardoThe Gibraltar discovery by Ecopetrol opened a frontier area of significant extent in the previously untested northern Llanos foothills province of the Eastern Cordillera of Colombia. The Gibraltar project when Ecopetrol captured the block had three main objectives and all were accomplished. The first objective was to verify or refute a structural geological model with a sidetrack that would reach the Paleocene Barco Formation and demonstrate the presence of hydrocarbons in the area. Ecopetrol´s hypothesis postulated that the well drilled originally by Occidental penetrated the backlimb of a single stack within a duplex structure in the central region of a triangle zone. This model was proven right after drilling three sidetracks. The Barco tested water with very low percentage of light hydrocarbons. The second purpose was to test presence and quality of hydrocarbons in the Mirador Formation. The original hypothesis was postulated based on a reinterpretation of unconventional petrophysics and unconventional fluids, this hypothesis argued for a missed or bypassed pay case. Tests of the Mirador Formation verified the presence of 57-degree condensate that flowed at a rate of 600 barrels per day and 44 million cubic feet of gas per day, flux restricted by gas separation and storage capacity. The third objective of Gibraltar re-entry was to find commercial hydrocarbons, open a new play, and to increase risk investment in the region. This third objective has not been verified yet but the following characteristics indicate that it is extremely likely that this is the case: the well is 2 km from a main pipeline with capacity, the hydrocarbons are of very good quality; the crest of the structure is at 6,500 feet, the shallowest discovery of the foothills; permeability from tests is of 800 m.d. being the highest of the foothills; finding cost for Ecopetrol was of 7 cents per barrel; finally and most importantly, the discovery was the first in the region.

Desarrollo De Un Yacimiento Con Geometria Compleja En Faja Plegada Mediante La Perforación De Pozos Horizontales: Yacimiento El Porton (Argentina)

Discrete Fracture Characterization Applied To The Margarita Field, Bolivia
More LessThe Margarita field in Bolivia was discovered in 1998 through the drilling and testing of the well MGR-x1. The discovered reservoir is the Huamampampa deep Devonian naturally fractured formation, containing gas and condensate. Two other wells MGR-x2 and MGR-x3 were drilled showing better fracture characteristics than the well MGR-x1. With the objective to improve the productivity of the well MGR-x1 a programme to perform a sidetrack and drill a horizontal section was proposed. Both, image logs interpretation and outcrops analogue study, provided the basic tools to establish the methodology applied to generate a discrete fracture network distribution to the vicinity area of the proposed horizontal section. Subsequent application of the fluid flow equations through fractures established a methodology to first calibrate the fractures productivity with the production test of the well and then to predict the productivity of the discrete fractures expected to be intercepted by the horizontal section of the well. The benefit of generating these predictions, specially during the early development stages of a field, is aimed to help in the selection of the recommended direction for the horizontal well in order to look for the largest possible number of intersections with natural fractures of best expected properties. Currently the side track operations to the well MGR-x1 is in progress.

The Tertiary Fusagasugá Succession; A Record Of The Complex Latest Cretaceous-Pre-Miocene Deformation In An Area Between The Magdalena Valley And Sabana De Bogotá
Authors G. Bayona, M. Cortés, C. Jaramillo and R. LlinasThe Tertiary succession in the Fusagasugá syncline includes unconformities, thick marginal to alluvial deposits, and an upsection change in sandstone composition that constrain pre-Miocene deformation eastward of the present western flank of the Cordillera Oriental. Five informal units were mapped along the western flank of the syncline. Lower Paleocene finegrained coastal plain deposits of Unit I (499 m) rest paraconformably upon upper Campanian shallow-marine sandstones and calcareous shales of the Guadalupe Group; palynological data document the absence of middle and upper Maastrichtian strata. The disconformity between paleosols at the top of Unit I and estuary sandstone and siltstones of Unit II (153 m) marks a second stratigraphic surface with a biostratigraphic gap that probably includes the Paleocene-Eocene boundary. The remaining succession (Units III to V; >1400 m) is not dated, and the lithofacies association of sandy siltstones and sandstones indicates that depositional environments prograded from coastal to alluvial plains. Mappeable sandstone intervals in Units II to V show lateral extent of several hundred of meters, intraformational gentle angular unconformities, and gentler dip of beds toward the axis of the syncline; these map patterns are similar to those predicted in growth strata in continental settings, suggesting accumulation during deformation. The upsection increase in population of lithic fragments and feldspars between the Guadalupe Group and Unit I, of metamorphic lithic fragments between Units I and II, and of volcanic lithic fragments between Units III and IV indicate the unroofing of source area(s) and volcanism during deposition of Units IV and V.

Quantitative Assesment Of Regional Siliciclastic Top-Seal Potential: A New Application Of Proven Technology In Frontier And Maturing South American Basins
Authors J. Deckelman, S. Lou, P. D‘Onfro and R. LahannUsing the offshore Pelotas basin, Brazil, as anexample, we present a methodology by whichpetrophysically-derived Vclay and capillary displacement pressure data, in conjunction with interval isochore maps, can be used to evaluate regional, siliciclastic present-day and paleo- top-seal effectiveness and relative risk. This method has broad application to frontier and maturing exploration areas where data limitations preclude more sophisticated seismically-derived velocity- based evaluations. As much of the Pelotas basin is deemed to be gas prone, top-seal effectiveness for normal density (0.1 to 0.2 g/cc) dry gas was assessed quantitatively by establishing relationships between density-log-derived hydrocarbon column height and overburden thickness using a most likely Vclay content. With constant Vclay, column height increases with increasing overburden due to a compaction-driven decrease in mudrock porosity, accompanied by a decrease in permeability and pore-throat diameter. Using these relationships, interval isochore maps(overburden thickness maps) can be transformed into hydrocarbon-column-height maps to define spatial variation in top-seal effectiveness, expressed in meters of contained gas column. Laboratory and model data (Aplin, Lang and Katsube, 2000) show that clay content and porosity (ultimately pore throat diameter) are the dominant controls on siliciclastic mudrock permeability, hence top-seal potential. Mudrock porosity is driven dominantly by burial - induced compaction; clay content is dependent on both depositional and diagenetic processes. Overburden can be determined with a reasonable degree of certainty from seismic and well data, whereas regional variation in clay content can, at best, only be estimated from depositional models. Therefore, for a given overburden, it is uncertainty in clay content that comprises the greatest risk in regional siliciclastic top-seal analysis. For this reason, we relate siliciclastic top-seal risk to clay content, when overburden/mudrock-porosity relationships, fluid densities, and requisite column heights are known.

El Pre-Aptense En La Cuenca Oriente Ecuatoriana
Authors M. Diaz, P. Baby, M. Rivadeneira and F. ChristophoulThe present paper describes the structural, stratigraphic and seismic characteristics of the pre-Aptian units of the Oriente Basin. The analysis of lithologic columns from wells as Sacha Profundo-1, Tambococha-1, etc..., and the interpretation of seismic sections allowed us to identify pre-Aptian formations in the central-northern and eastern parts of the Oriente basin. They consist of four seismic units: Unit 1 (Basement); Unit 2 (Paleozoic); Unit 3 (Upp.Tr. - Lw. J.) and the Unit 4 (Mid. J. - Early K.) that includes a new formation named Tambococha Fm. (eastern of the basin). Structural analysis of some structures has permitted to define the tectonic framework of the pre-Aptian basins. Two longitudinal "Back-arc" basins with different structural styles developed from Middle Jurassic to Early Cretaceous. The first one, known as the Corredor Sacha-Shushufindi, was controlled by normal deep faults and corresponds to an aborted Triassic "Rift". The second, known as Sistema Invertido Capirón- Tiputini, was structured by normal listric fault branched on a decollement located in the basement. The pre- Aptian petroliferous system of the Oriente Basin is poor studied. The Santiago Formation seems to be a good source rock, but its distribution in the Oriente basin is not well defined yet.

Historia De La Cuenca Cretacea Del VSM En Un Marco Cronoestratigrafico. Implicaciones Ambientales
By L.M.

Authors M. Fernández, H. Verzi and E. SanchezThe aim is to emphasize the use of 3-D seismic (more 2000 Km2), well-logs, cores, bioestratigraphic data to improve pre-existing regional geological models. It permits to explain different traps, provide new opportunities for exploration programs and development planning. The Vaca Muerta, Quintuco and Loma Montosa Formations (Tithonian / Early Valanginian) are transgressive-prograding depositional sequences of deep marine shales and slope to shelf carbonates and clastics deposits, in the Neuquen Basin. This interval has a preserved thickness from 375 to 1100 m and the most important hydrocarbon fields are located in Loma La Lata and Río Neuquén. However, the reservoir conditions are still a main risk factor. In the study area, the stratigraphical record shows that global eustatic sea-level changes rule the influence on sedimentation, modified by the local effects of tectonics episodes (Huincul High). Therefore, tectonism also controls the thickness of the main systems tracts, the areal distribution and the initial profile of the carbonate platform. The influence of this tectonic events is more pronuonced southward. In addition, the tidal-influenced environments appears to have been the strong control in the carbonate platform.

Subandean Basins And The Independents: The Future
Authors C. Garibaldi and D. GeroldThe current combination of external forces (industry and macro environment) has prompted an era of consolidation. The new super-majors must now satisfy even larger appetites for materiality. These point them towards focus regions with high prospectivity, which are often countered by severe technological, marketability, or geopolitical barriers. In their wake, they are leaving large interstices and regional niches to independents, including the mature, emerging, and frontier Sub Andean basins. This opens an unprecedented window of opportunity for independents. To succeed in this region they need to differentiate by adopting new strategic positions and developing a new set of technical and commercial competencies, including for example, the mitigation and management of surface risks and better knowledge about their hosts. After a successful 1990's decade our continent has now fallen victim to a generalized perception of geopolitical and economic disarray, disproving itself as a reliable supply source. Besides stabilizing politically and economically, the governments in the region must struggle to first reestablish investor credibility, and then take a daring stand to reengineer their sector policies to attract the much needed investments. Since independents should likely be their target audience, governments should tailor their legal, fiscal and contractual frameworks to the independents' financial constraints and screening criteria, facilitate access to market for stranded resources, and focus on the mitigation of their surface risks. To successfully compete among themselves and against the rest of the world's petroleum provinces, heroic measures are perhaps in order, including the slaying of "sacred cows" and other myths.

Structure Of The Offshore Sinu Accretionary Wedge. Northern Colombia
More LessThe Sinu Accretionary Wedge is located along the northern Colombia Caribbean margin an is partially exposed onshore (Lower Magdalena valley and San Jacinto mountains) and offshore extending from Uraba to the offshore Santa Marta area and joints the northern accretionary wedge of Venezuela in the north. The Offshore and younger part of the prism is much wider and develope than the inner " starved " onshore part. The Proto-Magdalena, Plato and other sedimentary systems contributed to a high sediment supply triggered by the surrection of the Central and Eastern Andean Cordillera since Upper Miocene time, when the offshore part of the prism developed. The offshore Sinu accretionary wedge illustrates the effect of strong lateral (i. e. along strike) variations of syn-tectonic sediments on the structural style of the prism. The thickness of syn-sedimentary strata is huge along the Proto-Magdalena delta (Offshore Cartagena area) which results in a blanketing effect of the deformation (i. e. false image of non-deformed strata). Along strike variations of sediment supply induce lateral changes of the critical taper angle. To re-equilibrate and reach a more stable profile (lower than the critical angle) the wedge collapses through normal faulting and toe-thrusting (i. e. thrusts that accommodate rear extension). Gravitationally induced toe-thrusts are superimposed to pre-existing thrust imbricates related to compression. This complex structure becomes more complicated by the presence of a ductile level of overpressure Oligocene shale that rise as shale ridges. Listric normal faults, toe-thrusts and shale ridges control fore-arc basins like the San Bernardo basin (SW from Cartagena). The present day structure of the offshore Sinu accretionary wedge is the result of NW-vergent compressional imbricates related to the B-subduction process overprinted by extensional and compressional gravitational structures.

Evidencias Sísmicas De Una Discordancia Intra-Villeta En La Region Nor-Oriental Del Valle Superior Del Magdalena

Cajones Formation Geometry And Regional Facies Distribution In The Boomerang Hills Area, Bolivia
Authors M. Kusiak and D. ZubietaThe Cajones Formation represents one of the most important reservoirs of the Boomerang fields. This reservoir produce gas and condensate mainly from thins sands horizons and the shale's constitutes sometimes a good seal of the Yantata Formation top reservoirs. The Upper Cretaceous (Maastrichtian) Cajones Formation share a gradational contact with the Yantata Formation and it had been affected by the Pre-Tertiary unconformity, which had cut almost all the upper strata section of this sequence in the Boomerang Hills area. The representative sequence for the Boomerang consists of white calcareous sandstones interbeds in a low scale of sandy limestones and shales levels. A striking characteristic of the Cajones Formation is the abundance and diversity of shapes of cemented areas, some of which are well enough defined to be considered concretions. Different cores were cut from some exploration and exploitation wells drilled in the Boomerang Hills area, shown buried stems of woody plants or vertical to subvertical roots and some burrows of large invertebrates. The isopach map of the Cajones Formation thickness indicates thinning from east to west and south to north as a result of Pre-Tertiary unconformity at the top of the sequence. The seismic interval does not present too much thickness and its internal character has a moderate parallelism and continuity. At the northeast of the Boomerang Hills where the depositional systems or facies changes and thinning is not easy to identify the horizons where the seismic lost definition and the Cajones Formation sediments could be interpreted as Tertiary levels.

Transectas Regionales De La Corteza Superior De Colombia

Caracterizacion De Las Unidades Arenosas Del Grupo Villeta En El Sector Suroccidental Del Valle Superior Del Magdalena

Sequence Stratigraphy Of The Late Silurian - Devonian Subandean Basin In Southern Bolivia And Northern Argentina
Authors A.P. Miranda, C. Souza Cruz, J.H. Melo and J. OllerDue to the recent discovery of several giant gas fields in the Subandean Basin in both Argentina and Bolivia, it has been noticed an increasing interest in detailing the stratigraphic setting of the Devonian reservoirs in these areas. Although extensive regional geological studies have been already performed in that area, they were carried out according to a lithostratigraphic approach. The absence of a suitable chronostratigraphic control was a major constraint for the understanding of the late silurian - Devonian paleogeography. The present work intends to apply a modern sequence stratigraphic approach on the late silurian - devonian section within the study area, in order to provide more reliable chronostratigraphic correlations between outcrop and well data. In this sense, selected outcrops were studied, regarding their palynological content, sedimentary facies and related processes, depositional systems and sequence stratigraphic elements. Well data, some of them related to recent gas discoveries, were also regionally integrated. The interpretation of outcrop and well data provided a suitable chronostratigraphic input for the recognition of sequence stratigraphic key elements and definition of 2nd and 3rd order sequences. More consistent regional correlations resulted from this new approach, including major devonian highstand and lowstand sand bodies, main reservoirs in the Subandean Basin gas fields.

Modelo Estratigráfico Para El Cretácico Basal (Aptiano-Albiano) En El Norte De La Sub-Cuenca De Neiva, Valle Superior Del Magdalena, Colombia

Paleogeography During The Aptian – Albian In The Neiva Subbasin (Upper Magdalena Basin, Colombia)
Authors C. Osorio, M. De Freitas, G. Tellez and J. AmaralThe tectonic and stratigraphic evolution of the upper Magdalena valley and adjacent Colombian areas took place in several structural and sedimentary episodes. The original Jurassic back-arc extensional basin in the area has been modified during several periods of compression, oblique slip, and elevation since the late Cretaceous to the present. A complex structural geometry and sedimentation has been developed in this basin, and maturation, migration, lithostratigraphic histories are significantly diverses in different sub-areas. A good comprehension of depositional environments , sedimentology and reservoir quality evolution during the Aptian-Albian is a key factor for the hydrocarbon exploration in the Upper Magdalena Basin. Since the clastic Aptian-Albian reservoirs (Alpujarra and Caballos Fms) are considered the main target in the area , the study was focussed on a regional paleogeographic mapping integrating all the available field and well information. It appears that the marine Aptian-Albian sediments was deposited overlying a Triassic- Jurassic basement on two main sedimentary cycles. The Alpujarra and Caballos reservoirs with a deepening marine environment to the North were influenced by clastics supplying coming from two existing paleo-highs: the Proto Central Cordillera to the West and the Garzon Massif to the East of the studied area. The reservoirs properties are considerably degraded to the South and the East of Neiva Subbasin.

Tertiary Depositional Environments And Reservoir Properties In The Sinu Accretionary Prism (Offshore -Colombia)
More LessThe Sinu accretionary prism is located in the northwestern corner of South America (Colombia) . This area has been submitted to major tectonic events related with the convergence of South America, Nazca, Caribbean and Cocos plates. The sedimentary clastic input influence of the Magdalena River delta since the Miocene (figure 1) was another key point for the evolution of this area. Overlying the oceanic crust, an Upper Cretaceous and Tertiary sedimentary sequence that could reach about 8000 m of thickness was deposited in the Sinu area. An integrated sedimentary and seismic stratigraphic study was carried out to predict the depositional environments and the reservoir properties in the study area. To attain these objectives the available well and outcrop data were integrated, a seismic facies interpretation of the available 2D information was performed in the Upper Miocene-Lower Pliocene interval and five paleogeographic maps from the Upper Paleocene to the Pleistocene were elaborated. During the Upper Paleocene to Lower Oligocene ages there was a low sedimentary clastic input in the Sinu area, improving the risk of reservoir presence. Later on, during the regional marine regressive phase of Late Oligocene, the development of turbiditic deposits is very probable and expected in the area. From the Middle Miocene, the major uplift of the Andean Cordilleras increased drastically the sedimentation rates of the paleo Magdalena and the paleo Sinu rivers. These fluvio- deltaic deposits passed to upper and lower fan environments towards the basin. The paleogeography model indicates that lower fan deposits were extensively developed in the Northern sector of the Sinu accretionary prism during the Upper Miocene - Early Pliocene. Additionally, the seismic facies observed (chaotic and continuous to discontinuous) are interpreted as sheet sands and distributary channels, considered as good to excellent potential reservoirs. In conclusion, good reservoir properties are expected for the Upper Miocene - Lower Pliocene lower fan turbiditic deposits related with the Paleo-Magdalena Delta.

Tectonic Influence In Trap Generation During The Early Eocene, Talara Forearc Basin, Nw Perú: A Case Study Of The Mogollón Formation
More LessThe Mogollon Formation represents one of the most important productive reservoir in the Lower Eocene of the Talara basin, northwest Peru, having accumulated almost 300 millions barrels since 1910. From a sedimentological point of view, transgressive deltas, alluvial fans, deltas and braided fluvial systems are interpreted from base to top. A complete geological overview was carried out, targeting the evaluation of the development and exploratory potential of blocks X and XVI. Well data, integrated in regional cross sections, were the base of the interpretations. The integration of production and seismic data has allowed, in some areas, the calibration of the interpretation based on electrical logs. A complex fault interation is observed, which gives some indication of how the trapping mechanism has evolved during periods of high and low tectonic activity. Basically we interpret two main traps styles: a) sand-conglomerate bodies which were subsequently tilted by tectonic activity, and where the hydrocarbon potential is higher in positions close to the back of master faults, and b) where regional listric faults have triggered rotational features (rollovers) in the hanging wall, increasing the frequency of small subordinate faults located at or near the top of the deformed structure. Consequently, productivity increases due to an improvement in the original reservoir permeability. In both cases, the final recovery is better than in other situations as for instance, in wells drilled on the flanks of rollover structures.

Estructuras Sencillas: Un Objetivo A Explorar: Ejemplos De Campos En Las Cuencas De Los Llanos Y El Putumayo

Facies Analysis And Stratigraphic Model Of The Carboniferous–Cretaceous Sequences In Eastern Central Subandean/Chaco Plain, Bolivia
Authors C. Souza Cruz and A. RochaDetailed facies analysis and depositional systems interpretation with outcrop, cores and well data, associated with seismic and palynological data, provided a suitable input for a more consistent paleoenvironment interpretation and stratigraphic regional correlation of the study area. Five megasequences (2nd order cycles) are proposed, based on major erosional unconformities: Upper Devonian (Iquiri-Itacua), Tupambi- Tarija, Escarpment-San Telmo, Elvira/Cangapi and Ichoa-Cajones megasequences. These five megasequences are split into several 3rd order cycles, which are widespread correlated within the area. Except for the Upper Devonian megasequence interpreted as shallow marine and glaciomarine, all other megasequences represent a thick continental section. Each 3rd order cycle within the Tupambi-Tarija and Escarpment-San Telmo megasequences starts with an erosional surface and presents fining upward arrangement. They are formed by polymitic conglomerate, massive or cross-bedded sandstone, covered by mudstone, shale and diamictite. There is a relationship between observed cyclicity, erosional surface and depositional systems explained by sea level change and glaciation. Right after glacial stage while sea level is rising, an isostatic rebound and decompaction locally cause a relative base level fall, triggering erosion, paleovalleys carving and sediment bypassing. During transgression and highstand periods the paleovalleys are infilled by backsteping fluvial deposits, gradually changing to flood plain and/or lacustrine deposits. A new climatic change drives glacial expansion causing local erosion, glaciotectonic deformation, glacial diamictites and periglacial deposits. The sandstone reservoirs are widespread in the study area and continuous above Escarpment- San Telmo megasequence. The thick glacigenic diamictites and lacustrine shales/mudstone facies, with regional extension, provide effective seals for the carboniferous interval.
