Improved multiple attenuation and imaging of OBC data using a wave theory based approach
Authors L. Amundsen, J. Vestby and L.E. BergIn the paper we present results obtained using a OBC data processing sequence we believe is better
than the industry standard today when it concerns to fully utilize the potential of multi-component
data. Instead of using straight forward Z-H summation (fails at large offsets), the sequence includes
decomposition of the recorded particle velocity wavefield and the recorded pressure wavefield into
separate upgoing and downgoing P-P and P-S wave modes using a 4C elastic decomposition algorithm
developed by Amundsen and Reitan (1995). Further, the processing sequence includes utilization
of the extracted downgoing P wave mode to remove all water-layer generated multiples
(peg-legs) from the upgoing wave modes in a deconvolution process (Amundsen, 1999), similar to
what routinely is applied to VSP data. Finally, to obtain tie between the final P-P and P-S images
in the depth domain, the imaging is applied anisotropic instead of isotropic to both P-S and P-P.
