Lithology and fluid estimation in 3D based on seismic inversion and geostatistics: the Rubiales field case
Seismic data and well-logs are the major sources of information for lithology discrimination and determination of the spatial distribution of reservoir sands and fluids. In Rubiales and other Llanos fields, conditions are adequate for accurate mapping of lithology based on elastic inversion of seismic data and petrophysical estimation of shale volume fraction. In general, sandstones are more rigid and lighter than shale at the basal Carbonera formation that comprises the reservoir. Spatial distribution of sands derived from seismic information is shown to be heterogeneous with layers and lenses of varying reservoir quality and communication across stratigraphic levels. The description obtained from the elastic inversion corresponds very well with the acquired well-log information and the geostatistical characterization of shale fraction derived from well-logs. This morphological complexity accentuates the importance of the 3D estimation of lithology and fluid saturation in the area. Seismic sensitivity to fluid saturation in the Rubiales field is smaller than lithology sensitivity, due to the density similarities between the heavy oil and brine. However, the spatial information provided by the large number of wells in the field, combined with the seismic information on lithology (which conditions the oil accumulation) provides an effective mapping for oil-bearing sands in 3D. We achieve an adequate combination of this information by geostatistical means, conditioning the estimation of reservoir properties to well data and seismically derived shale fraction. The study has been relevant for the interpretation of the complex sand morphology, water-oil contacts, the location of horizontal wells that increase the productivity of the field and the definition of the static model for the area.

Authors R. Aguilar, A. Rangel, J.R.

Cenozoic Petroleum Systems of the Sinú – San Jacinto Basin. Exploratory Perspectives of a Promising Frontier
Authors Roberto Aguilera, Jorge Cortes and Jaime NińoThe Sinú San Jacinto Basin (SSJ) although the abundance of oil and gas seeps, is an under-explored and poorly understood basin, especially on the dynamics of the petroleum systems. A long lasting exploratory paradigm about the basin is the absence of source rocks for liquid hydrocarbons in the Cenozoic sequence and that the oil found in wells and seeps has provenance from upper Cretaceous rocks (Cansona Fm.). However, recent studies of source rock quality show that in the Cenozoic sedimentary succession, particularly of Paleocene age, there are intervals with source rock characteristics appropriate for generation of liquid hydrocarbons, which is corroborated by detailed studies of biomarkers from rock extracts, crude oils and seeps in the basin, suggesting that the input of hydrocarbons sourced from units deposited during the Cenozoic is more important than previously believed for the basin, being probably the most important source. Similarly generation models of some depocenters, calibrated with thermal maturity data (Tmax and% Ro) and biomarkers, indicate that the Cenozoic sequence, especially Paleogene rocks, can reach maturity conditions suitable for hydrocarbons generation similar to those estimated from biomarkers from crude oils in the basin. These results open a new spectrum of exploration opportunities in conventional and unconventional petroleum systems associated with the Cenozoic, increasing the prospectivity potential of this under-explored basin.

Seismic Stratigraphic Analysis on the Off Shore (Pelotas Basin)
More LessAs a strategy of exploration of divergent margins through deep and ultra deep water, the understanding of this challenging and poorly known environment is really relevant in terms of understanding the evolution of the basin. Recent advances in technology, in marine seismic acquisition, processing, and interpretation, has become increasingly important the continental – oceanic boundary for petroleum system within a basin still unexplored for hydrocarbons. Due to recent discoveries in the succession pre salt and post salt in the Santos and Campos Basin, is worthwhile to know what is the structural and stratigraphical context of the southernmost basin of the Brazilian margin, The Pelotas Basin. The aim of this paper is to analyze this thick stratigraphic succession using sequence stratigraphy, seismic attributes in order to create and contribute a better understanding of this basin (Pelotas) and its Africans analogues, the Walvis and Nambia basins.

Origin and Kinematics of Extension in the Llanos Basin, Colombia
Authors Gabriel Veloza-Fajardo and Guillermo Hernandez-Ladinos. However the origin and kinematics of these faults have received little attention. Our preliminary analysis indicates that these faults are related to brittle deformation of the lithosphere, as a response of a rapid onset of tectonic loads in the growing Eastern Cordillera during Late Miocene to recent times. The magnitude of extension decreases eastward, as the distance from the thrusting front increase, ranging from hundreds of feet in the Upia area to tenths of feet in the Sabanero – Rubiales area. Timing of fault initiation and activity are constrained based on recent thermochronological data from the Eastern Cordillera, that shows an abrupt increase in shortening, from 1.5 – 1.8 mm/yr during the Upper Miocene (~2 Ma ago) to 3.5 – 5.0 mm/yr for the Plio-Pleistocene (2 Ma ago), and also from regional correlations with published biostraigraphic data of the basin. The deformation style of the northern portion of the Llanos basin is compared with the foreland basins of Putumayo (Colombia) and Oriente (Ecuador), where the trapping mechanism, rheology of the crust and basin fill are strikingly different, leading us to conclude that these basins represents two different tectonic provinces, that are being sutured by the north-eastern extension of the Algeciras - Guayaquil fault system, that extends into the Llanos basin transferring slip from the trench inboard.

Giant Mass Transport Complex from the Distal Magdalena Fan, Offshore Colombia : Seismic Characterization
Authors Stephen Leslie, Juan Carlos Mosquera, Ingrid Cordon and Oscar Lopez-GamundiA giant (>3000 km3) mass transport complex (MTC) is imaged from the distal Magdalena Fan, offshore Colombia. The MTC is imaged on a loose grid of 2D seismic data, located in ultra-deep water 150-200 km north of the city of Barranquilla. The deposit varies in thickness from ~40-200 m, thinning onto pre-existing seafloor topography. The area of the slide is >25,000 km2. Calculations indicate a volume larger than 3000 cubic kilometers of sediment was involved in this single catastrophic event. The MTC is likely Pleistocene in age as constrained by the DSDP site 153 well penetration. The top of the deposit is defined by a relatively rugose seismic reflector and lies only 150 m below the present day seafloor. Internally, a variety of seismic facies are present, ranging from incoherent/chaotic within the core of the deposit, to continuous reflections broken by small scale, regular reverse faults at the margins. Little to no erosion appears to have occurred at the base of the deposit, as evidenced by continuous and conformable reflections in the interface between the underlying sediments and the base of the MTC.

Pleistocene to Recent Channel / Levee System from the Slope of the Magdalena Fan
Authors Stephen Leslie, Ingrid Cordon and Oscar Lopez-GamundiThe Pleistocene to Recent Magdalena Fan, offshore NW Colombia provides excellent examples of mid to upper slope submarine channels and associated levee complexes. We focus on a single channel levee complex which we identify as the Manga Channel Levee Complex (MCLC). The internal architecture of the MCLC is clearly defined by high quality 3D seismic data recently collected in the area. Four distinct seismic facies are visible, 1) relatively discontinuous groups of chaotic reflections of variable amplitude, 2) thick packages of low amplitude, continuous and converging reflectors, 3) groups of high amplitude, stacked reflectors and, 4) Laterally continuous packages of low to medium strength reflections that drape underlying topography. We interpret these facies to represent chaotic mass transport complexes, levee and overbank silts and shales, channelized conglomerates/sands, and a hemi-pelagic blanket of silts and shales respectively. Processes such as channel establishment, evolution, and abandonment are identified in the dataset.

Chemostratigraphic correlation of cretaceous cansona formation outcrops and implications on the interpretation of its depositional environment
Authors Leonardo Mogollón, Luz Stella Vargas, Jael Pacheco, Geovanni Romero and Victor RamirezIn the southern Colombian Caribbean coast (Sinú-San Jacinto Basins) a significant potential for hydrocarbon generation has been identified. This potential is also confirmed by the occurrences of oil and gas seepage on the surface. Previous research has suggested these manifestations, both liquid and gaseous to be correlated with source rocks of Cretaceous and Tertiary age. The absence of oil-rock correlations, the immaturity and the type of kerogen from the Tertiary rocks proposed as potential source rocks, have redirected the attention to the detailed study of the Cretaceous Cansona Formation. 460 rock samples collected from outcrops of the Cansona Formation in six different localities were characterized using basic geochemical techniques (Total organic carbon (TOC), RockEval pyrolysis VI) , Mass spectrometry with inductively coupled plasma (ICP-MS, macro elements and trace elements) and total sulfur (LECO sulfur analyzer carbon). These data were analyzed using statistical techniques and cluster dendrograms for the definition of quimiofacies. The results allowed the definition of six quimiofacies which are described in compositional and parametric terms. These facies were determined by the type of organic matter and the paleo environmental conditions of deposit. These chemo facies are positively correlated with organofacies described in previous works. The chemofacies 1 is associated with the best inputs of organic matter and higher contents of the elements S, V, Ni and Co. The Co/Ni ratio shows that the organic matter is predominantly of marine origin and the parameter V/Ni indicates that this organic matter was deposited under anoxic to disoxic conditions.

The impact of very accurate mapping of shallow velocity layers, determined by combining surface and refracted waves on static corrections. An example from the Llanos Basin, Eastern Colombia, SA
Authors German Rodriguez, Ingrid Tello, Ivan Hernandez, Wilmer Galindo and Jose JaramilloEstimating an accurate P-wave velocity of near-surface subsoil is necessary for reliable static corrections of reflection data used in seismic exploration, crucial for exploration surveys of areas with very low relief structures less than 25 milliseconds like Sub Andean Llanos basin, in Eastern Colombia. We found that combining Raleigh wave inversion together with P wave refraction tomography give us a very precise subsurface layered model that is quite useful for accurate static correction. To carry out this subsurface model, seismic data was acquired using a multi-channel seismograph, with 10-Hz Geospace GS-One geophones, and low-power explosive charges that acted as the seismic source. The seismic data was collected at a sample interval of 1 millisecond, and a trace length of 1000 milliseconds. Following the seismic data acquisition, the first breaks of the refracted wave were picked and inverted to obtain a refraction tomography through an iterative process of ray tracing and smooth inversion. The refraction tomography provided a P-wave velocity model of the subsoil to a depth of 10 meters approximately. Once the refraction tomography was obtained, the S wave profile was estimated by generating overtone images, which are cross plots of phase-velocities and frequencies of surface waves, usually considered as noise and filtered from the data. Each overtone image was picked to extract dispersion curves, and inverted together with the P-wave velocity model to obtain an S-wave velocity model. Some results obtained from data acquired and processed by GMAS are included.

First Successful Fracturing Application in Unconventional Gas Reservoir in Colombia: Field Case
Authors Rudyard Vega, Ivan Leyva, Luis Francisco Rojas, Augustin De Fex, Claudio Navarro and Karen SinzaColombia’s oil industry has been on a rapid development over the past couple of years, and foreseeing the upcoming challenges for production maintenance the E&P companies have driven their efforts towards discovering and developing in unconventional formations. The Porquero formation (Lower to Middle Miocene), located in the Lower Magdalena Basin, consists of deepwater massive shales and shaly sandstones. In late 2010, the operator company (Pacific Rubiales Energy (PRE)) drilled the Well A-1X having as exploration target gas condensate in the Porquero formation in the Plato sub-basin in the Lower Magdalena. This paper goes through the process in which the Well A-1X well was evaluated and considered to be a candidate for Hydraulic Fracturing, the design process and analysis of the complexity of the Porquero formation, and finally the execution of the first Hydraulic Fracture in an unconventional, high-shale, low-perm gas sand formation in Colombia. The pilot hydraulic fracture was an economical approach to test the Porquero formation and estimate their productivity and reserves; a post-fracture 4-day well test showed PI improvement of 300% (3 times). This pilot frac job was carried only on one of four perforated intervals. Its successful development opens an opportunity to evolve into more complex completions such as multistage fracturing and horizontal well development for the field.

C-isotope age constrains of aptian marine extension and oceanic anoxia in northern colombia: implications for the cretaceous caribbean oil system
The C-isotope stratigraphy of mixed siliciclastic-carbonate fossiliferous strata cropping out to in the southwestern flank of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta is reported. A pronounced positive C-isotope excursion of up to 7‰ suggests a lower Aptian (ca 123 Ma) depositional age. The mixed carbonate-siliciclastic successions concordantly overlay basaltic volcanics from the Guatapuri Formation. We relate the published 125 Ma K-Ar ages of such volcanics and the depositional age of the studied successions to an extensional event, followed by rapid tectonic stabilization and platform deposition. The pronounced positive C-isotope excursion is a global feature displayed by marine sediments deposited during a global oceanic anoxic event (OAE1). As the OAE1 would have favored the preservation and deposition of organic matter in the global oceans substrates, the studied sedimentary successions may be considered as a potential hydrocarbon-generating unit. The proposed age ultimately precludes the correlation of the studied successions with other hydrocarbon generating units in northern Colombia (e.g. The Cogollo Group and the La Luna Formation). The inferred depositional age and the occurrence of the OAE1 may also be considered when planning future oil exploration programs in the northern Colombian basins. This work highlights the use of stable C isotope chemostratigraphy for identification of cretaceous oil source rocks in NW South America and the Caribbean.

Authors Daniel C. Malizia, Graciela Prestia and García RobertoThe search for unconventional reservoirs and the beginning of their expensive development requires changes in the conventional exploration philosophy and in the tools used. The fast tract exploration of sweetspots may help to increase return in a development project’s high initial yields if its systematic detection is improved. The use of unconventional exploration methods, together with other more traditional methods used that resulted in a sweetspot detection is shown in the case studied. These methods are more effective when combined with more traditional ones to add value to the structures, thus forming an integrated set that increases the chances in a particular prospect and the economic feasibility of a development project.

Costayaco Field, Further Exploration and Production activities in the Putumayo Basin, Colombia
Authors Edgar Garcia Dueńas and Carlos RamirezThe Costayaco Field is located in the northwest portion of the Putumayo Basin, Colombia. S.A. It consists of a major thrust fault/dip closed accumulation. Costayaco Field was discovered in 2007 by Gran Tierra Energy Colombia and is currently under development. Original oil in place (OOIP) is calculated around 140 MMstb. To date, 15 wells have been drilled and 19 MMstb of oil have been produced with ESP´s and jet pump systems. All of the Cretaceous siliciclastic reservoirs contain oil; the main objectives, Caballos Fm. and Villeta T Sand, have 30° API gravity oil with a rather low GOR. The field doesn't have a primary gas cap and the oil column for the T sand and Caballos Fm. is around 215 ft each. Further development of the field in 2012 includes continuing with the current water injection in 4 wells, drilling 2 peripheral injector wells, and 2 infill producer wells. The delineation plan for the Costayaco Field is based on the interpretation and analysis of 3D seismic data (Chaza 2007, 70 Km2), core data and core description, lab measurements, and petrophysical analysis of the openhole logs. All of the above was integrated into a robust 3D static reservoir characterization model. Based upon our extensive knowledge of the basin along with the expert contribution of our team, we have reached the production plateau of 17,000 BOPD.

Defining the geometry of the subducting Caribbean slab beneath northwestern Colombia and its controls on the overriding Lower Magdalena forearc basin
Authors Rocio Bernal-Olaya, Paul Mann and Alejandro EscalonaWe have integrated 800 earthquake events, 7000 km of 2D seismic lines, 13 exploration wells, and regional gravity and magnetic data in order to test the idea that the Lower Magdalena basin (LMb) formed as a forearc basin above the subducting Caribbean slab, in NW Colombia. Earthquake events combined with deep-penetration seismic reflection data show that subduction is occurring at a shallow angle (~12-19°), attributed to the subduction of late Cretaceous Caribbean oceanic plateau crust previously determined to be 10-15 km thick. Earthquake focal mechanisms show normal events occurring as a result of bending of the Caribbean oceanic plateau along with thrust and strike-slip events. Gravity and magnetic models combined with seismic reflection profiles show the presence of a lower, more dense sedimentary unit, inferred to be an older and highly deformed Cretaceous to Eocene accretionary prism underlying the Oligocene to Recent forearc basin units of LMb and overlying the subducting Caribbean slab. The forearc basin fill varies in age from Oligocene to Holocene and can be seen onlapping the upper sedimentary basement unit. These onlaps are consistent with the upper basement unit forming a ridge since Oligocene. The directions of depocenter migration shift in both landward and seaward directions from Early Miocene to Holocene time likely reflecting infill, faulting and uplift events forming the forearc ridges and perhaps dip changes in the subducting Caribbean slab. The forearc basin was overfilled in Pleistocene time and resulted in formation of the 68000 km2 Magdalena fan offshore, in the Colombian basin.

Integrated geological modeling of the Llanos Basin: Input from SANBAS consortium
The Llanos Basin covers more than 200,000 km2 in the eastern side of Colombia and contains some of the biggest Colombian oil fields such as Cańo Limon and Cusiana-Cupiagua. With remaining resources in place probably exceeding 10,000 MBOE (including Rubiales) and 10 TCF the Llanos basin is very attractive for Exploration. The aim of the SANBAS consortium is to focus on new play concepts to identify new resources, through an integrated approach combining integration of existing studies, seismic interpretation of key lines, new petrophysical and geochemical analyses and integrated 2D/3D petroleum system modeling.

A prestack interpolation primer Part 1: Tutorial
More LessPrestack interpolation of land data is a topic of great interest in modern seismic processing. Prestack interpolation is used for diverse applications ranging from infilling of sparse acquisition in areas exhibiting complex topography or otherwise inaccessible terrain to data regularization for azimuthal processing required in fracture detection analysis to minimizing sampling-induced prestack migration artifacts in AVO analysis to harmonizing the sampling across different surveys in merge processing. Yet for all its popularity, prestack interpolation seem to be poorly understood by the geophysical community at large and misconceptions abound concerning the question of what prestack interpolation can and cannot do. The purpose of this tutorial presentation will be to be to provide the geophysical interpreter with a clear understanding of the algorithmic assumptions and relative pros and cons for two powerful interpolation techniques so that he/she can more reliably appraise their performance in a production environment. The first of these is the popular 5D interpolation by Fourier reconstruction approach (often called 5DMWNI) and the second is an approach based on local time-space dip-scans and slant stacks. We will focus on simplifying the basic theory and we will illustrate the strengths and weaknesses using very simple synthetic data testing. In particular we will distinguish between two very important and different interpolation tasks: regular upsampling and gap filling of random holes and we will carefully study the algorithms’ response to spatially aliased input data.

Potencial Presencia de la Formación Ciénaga de Oro entre las Fallas de Algarrobo y Santa Marta en el Valle Inferior del Magdalena, Colombia
Authors Paulina Ferreira, Luis Antonio Castillo, Yucet Fechi and Carlos GuerreroBased on interpretation of the 3D seismic volume which was acquired in Brillante area during 2010 and the evidence supported by biostratigraphic data, log analysis also petrographyc description of some wells located close to Brillante area, our team proposes the probable presence of Cienaga de Oro (CDO) Formation in between Algarrobo and Santa Marta Faults. On the Eastern part of Lower Magdalena Basin (LMB) there are two main faults which are used as reference in this analysis. The first one is the Algarrobo Fault which is the boundary of Brillante structure where the CDO is tested, and the second one is the Santa Marta Fault, which is the limit between LMB and Cesar-Ranchería Basin. CDO Formation is in this area as in the whole LMB, the main reservoir proved; but previous considerations suggest that the Algarrobo Fault is the limit for its deposition. However the information obtained from the wells and the 3D seismic interpretation, referred to amplitudes and seismic characters which are defined features of CDO formation in the western part of the fault, clearly shows a possibility of CDO formation presence in between Algarrobo and Santa Marta Faults due to an excellent correlation of this features in both sides of the fault. This study induces to think in new possibilities for hydrocarbon exploration in this part of the basin, due to the potential presence of the reservoir.

Calcareous nannofossil biostratigraphy of Neogene Lower Magdalena Valley Basin-LMVB (Colombian Caribbean): new multi-proxy data from Porquero Formation as a potential hydrocarbon source
The Porquero Formation is one of the potential Cenozoic sources of hydrocarbons in the Lower Magdalena Valley Basin-LMVB (Colombian Caribbean). Sediments typical described include in situ pelagic and hemipelagic regimes in a deep ocean floor environment. Two wells belong this formation was sampled for calcareous nannofossil analyses: the P-16 and P-18. Precision and accuracy of nannofossil biostratigraphic correlations have been applied extensively and many events have been calibrated by orbital stratigraphy. The resulting biostratigraphy proposed in this study corresponds to Oligocene/Miocene transition to mid Miocene, which are in agreement with that obtained in recent studies performed by University of Salamanca. This study presents new unpublished data improving the biostratigraphic framework available with direct applications for oil exploration. Continental to deepest marine facies have been studied by integrating of other micropaleontological proxies (pollen and foraminifera) indicating an important supply of organic matter to the basin, and consequently potential source rock. Analyses performed in this work have given an average TOC of 1.83 % (30 samples). The warm phase of the early Miocene peaked in the Middle Miocene Climatic Optimum (17-14.5 Ma) is reflected in the microfossil assemblage and in the abundance patterns, and represent a potential key for future paleoceanographic investigations.

Stable Isotopes in Methane and Hydrogen Sulfide as Reliable Tools in Provenance Studies of Natural Gases Trapped in Gas Hydrates of Colombian Caribbean offshore Basins
Authors Humberto Carvajal Ortiz and Lisa M. PrattGas hydrates are considered the ultimate natural gas reserve of the planet and are probably present in the Caribbean offshore of Colombia, based on 2-D seismic studies that have detected zones with high density of bottom simulating reflectors (BSR) in the Colombia, Sinú Offshore, and Guajira Offshore Basins (e.g., Reed et al., 1990; Lopez and Ojeda, 2006). Stable isotopes in methane (CH4) and hydrogen sulfide (H2S) can be used as source-fingerprints of gas molecules trapped inside hydrates, allowing the differentiation of CH4 from microbial and thermal processes, providing valuable context for economic recovery of natural-gas resources. It is challenging, however, to apply isotope systematics to hydrate-forming systems due to complex influences on nucleation and dissociation under varying conditions of salinity/pressure/temperature and interactions of gas molecules with clay minerals and organic matter. In this study, pressure-vessel analogue models allow nucleation of gas hydrates, attempting to simulate the conditions at potential gas hydrate sites: low temperatures, high pressures, CH4 and H2S saturation, varying salinity, clay mineralogy (smectites), and microbial biosurfactants reported to occur at natural hydrate sites. Salinity CH4-experiments show only small differences in carbon and moderate variations in hydrogen isotopic compositions between gas phases (free gas vs. hydrate gas). Also, experiments with clay minerals and biosurfactants display an enhancement in isotopic fractionations of the different gas fractions. These results and those of ongoing experiments will refine interpretation of gas provenance and will improve risk assessment at sites where recurrent hydrate formation complicates hydrocarbon drilling and transportation in pipelines.

Basement map of the Venezuela Eastern Basin from gravity and magnetic inversion
Authors Nestor Cahuana, Andreína García and Nuris OrihuelaWe present the basement map of the Venezuela Eastern Basin, at 1:500.000 scale, located between the coordinates 61ş to 66ş west longitude, and between 8ş and 11ş north latitude. The gravity anomalies are from Venezuela gravity anomalies database processed from satellite, aerial and marine surveys; whereas the magnetic anomalies are from geopotential combined models. This map was obtained by gravity/magnetic inversion methods: Radial power spectrum, Euler deconvolution, Werner deconvolution; and gravity/magnetic modeling. The depth solutions obtained by applying these techniques, has been associated with the location and depth of sources that cause the anomalies, in this case, with the top of crystalline basement and geological structures involving the basement. Exploration wells data and structurally interpreted seismic sections previously in the area, were used to validate the results. Synthetics anomalies of gravity and magnetism were generated with the aim of comparing the observed with the theoretical response, thus allowing a best fit of the three-dimensional model. The obtained results allow the interpretation of geological structures involving the crystalline basement, as well as proposing new prospective areas.

Tectonic and subsidence history of the Llanos foreland basin of Colombia
Authors Henry Campos and Paul MannColombia is located in the northwestern corner of South America. The NE-trending Andean mountain range is divided into three separate cordilleras: the Oriental (eastern), Central, and Occidental (western). The uplift of these cordilleras was caused by the combination of east-west shortening due to the subduction of the Nazca and Caribbean plates beneath the South American plate and the collision of the Panama arc-indentor with western Colombia. Between the Guiana Shield and the Cordillera Oriental, the basement dips westward into the subandean Putumayo and Llanos basins, which are separated by the Serrania de la Macarena and the Vaupes arch. The Arauca arch separates the Colombian Llanos basin from the Venezuelan Barinas-Apure basin. The Llanos basin of Colombia covers approximately 194,000 km2 and is considered one of the most prolific hydrocarbon basins along the eastern flank of the Andes in South America (ANH, 2007). The most significant factor affecting the hydrocarbon potential of the Llanos basin was the deposition of marine Cretaceous source rocks that were deeply buried and thermally matured (Moretti et al., 2009), and the multiple phases of orogeny (Parra et al., 2009b, 2010) that produced many structural and stratigraphic traps and pathways for oil migration.

2nd Edition of the Geological Map of Colombia
Authors Jorge Gómez Tapias and Nohora Emma Montes RamírezThe Geological Map of Colombia-GMC is an ongoing project that started in 2001, the 1st edition was finished in 2007 and now is one of the main functions of the Colombian Geological Survey. The GMC summarizes the superficial geological information of the Colombian territory compiled using ArcGIS 9.3.1 by integration and generalization of 1:100,000 scale geological sheets published by the Colombian Geological Survey. The harmonization was controlled using remote sensing imagery such as Landsat, radar and a 30 m resolution NASA-SRTM DEM. The units represented on the GMC were defined according to a mixed chronostratigraphic-lithostratigraphic classificatory scheme. The technological platform that supports the SIGER is based on the database management systems Oracle 10g and ArcSDE 8.3 for the handling of the data. Additionally, with the objective to feed GMC database, the GIS radiometric ages catalog of Colombia has been made and include with this edition. 2nd edition of the GMC was released in 2012 and includes 70 brand new geological sheets at a scale 1:100,000, actualized official base map of the Geographical Institute Agustin Codazzi-IGAC with MAGNA coordinate system compatible with WGS84 coordinate system, new colors and ages of the International Stratigraphic Chart 2008, the Tectonic framework of NW South America and the Caribbean with 2011GPS vectors 2011 and the geological harmonization with the geological maps of Peru and Brazil after two workshops in 2009 and 2011 with colleagues of the CPRM and INGEMMET.

Basement setting in the east edge of the parnaíba basin, using air gravimetric, magnetometric, seismic and land gravity data
Authors José Bezerra, André Rugenski, Renato Silveira and Roberto AguiarThis paper presents a joint interpretation of aerial survey data from gravimetry and magnetometry, 2D seismic data and terrestrial gravity data in order to examine the stratigraphic framework and configuration of the basement in the central-eastern Parnaíba Basin in region of Transbrasiliano Lineament north-northeast of Brazil. The main objective of this study is to map the architecture and composition of the basement, the structural, stratigraphic and volcanic rocks, in order to characterize the hydrocarbon prospectivity. The Transbrasiliano Lineament (LTB) is a suture zone of NNE-SSW direction, which reaches 100 km wide, featuring behind the geophysical constrain Parnaíba Basin resulting on zones of crustal weakness reactivated since the Precambrian. The tectonic movement in LTB reflects the evolution of Paleozoic and Mesozoic sedimentary basins along its length. Fairhead et al., 2007, based on aeromagnetic data from Brazil and Northern Africa, considers the LTB as part of the crustal lineament Argentina - Brazil - Algeria (ABA). The workflow includes integrated interpretation of 2D seismic, gravity data and detailed land-scale aerial survey data covering gravimetric and magnetometric methods with imaging and filtering; solutions depth of magnetic basement using Werner deconvolution, Euler technique and half slope of Peters; 2D seismic time and sections depth in the initial links with gravity and magnetic modeling.

An Integrated View of Textural Variations in the Eagle Ford, South Texas, USA, as seen in Core, CT Scans, Thin Section and SEM
Authors Brian Driskill, Andrew Govert and Lori HathonUnconventional reservoirs are becoming an important source of hydrocarbons around the world. For many years, detailed studies of mudrocks were not conducted largely due to the pervasive view that muds, being the result of fine-grained settling within a quiet water column, were ‘uneventful’. Recent research, however, indicates that mudrocks are internally more complex than previously thought and mostly likely deposited under dynamic conditions. Recognition of the complexity of mudrocks has led to a desire to more fully describe finegrained cores with attention to textural variations. From an exploitation point of view, understanding the fine-scale structure of mudstones is a key part to building a framework with which to better predict reservoir vertical and lateral variability. The Cenomanian-Turonian Cretaceous Eagle Ford Formation of the Texas Gulf Coast is a dark grey marl that functions as both source and reservoir. From multiple cores within both the oil and gas-condensate windows, a database of core descriptions, thin sections, high-resolution helical computed tomography (CT) scans, and SEM images of ion-milled surfaces was built. Observations from these data were used to create an interpretation of the Eagle Ford’s texture and fabric. In particular, the CT data was fund to be very helpful for understanding the internal fabric and was used to initially break the rock into fabric units. An outcome of this work was an understanding of why a ‘universal’ electrofacies model was elusive. Tying these observations to larger scale cycles seen in well logs and outcrops created a predictive model for reservoir quality.

How to compute the gas in place on unconventional gas shale play
More LessThe conventional prospect charge is almost always evaluated thanks to basin model. They allow the explorationist to compute subsidence history, source rock maturation and fluid migration and accumulation versus time. At the beginning of the gas shale exploration success story, dynamic trial and error approaches have been common, apparently without too much of geological input in the decision. However, careful basin analysis may help to predict where the source rocks have the adequate mineralogy to be frac and the adequate TOC and richness to generate gas. The temperature, pressure and TOC versus time could be modeled and therefore the adsorbed volume of gas that have to be added to the free one in the porosity.

Current practises in design of 3d land seismic programs or: “3d” stands for design for density and diversity
More LessBy the early ‘90s we were focused on how to produce a good and stable stacked section, then we would post-stack migrate our volumes. Spatial resolution was related to bin size. Designs were driven by considerations of desired fold (determining line spacings) and post-migration resolution (determining bin size). Design philosophy could be summarized as: “design parameters that will produce a good stacked data volume, and account for the fact that post-stack migration will steepen dips and require smaller stacked trace intervals, therefore smaller bins”. With Pre-stack time migration we realized that fold and bin-size were not the most important driving factors. Producing a data set that provides good sampling of migration operators in all domains will allow the migration process to output data of maximum resolution. Output trace spacing is not limited to bin size. Design philosophy shifted from a focus on fold and bin-size to a focus on trace density and statistical diversity (in offsets, azimuths and midpoints). In other words: “design parameters that deliver what is needed by a pre-stack migration operator and then let the migration produce the image we need”. Now based on 5-component COV matrix completion data reconstruction, we can restate our objective as: “design parameters that deliver what is needed for robust interpolation, then the interpolator will provide the traces needed by a pre-stack migration operator and then the migration will produce the image we need”.

“Santonian Channelized Systems of The Santos Basin, Brazil: New Discoveries and Perspectives”
The Santos Basin is located in the Southeast region of Brazilian continental margin. It encompasses around 350,000 km2 of area, limited to the North with The Campos Basin by the Cabo Frio High and to the South with The Pelotas Basin by the Florianópolis Platform (Figure 1). In the same year of its creation OGX acquired four (4) exploration blocks in the 9th Bid Round organized by the National Petroleum Agency (ANP). Located in the Santos Basin these four blocks are situated in water depths of 150 meters and at 90 km from the coast of the states of Săo Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. The Santos Basin Petroleum Systems are well known and very active as confirmed by many recent discoveries made from 2002 on. Two important intervals of source rocks are present in the basin, (a) the Barremian (~128 My) lacustrine shales and (b) the Albian-Cenomanian (~99 My) marine shales. These source rocks generated the oil and natural gas discovered in reservoirs of many types and ages: (a) Eocene Sandstones in the northern part of the basin, (b) Santonian and Campanian Sandstones in the central part, (c) Oligocene and Albian-Cenomanian Sandstones and Albian Oolitic Calcarenites in the southern part and, (d) most recently, the Aptian Microbiolite Carbonates in the Pre-Salt area. Additionally, OGX found in its shallow water blocks Albian fractured Carbonates. The present work focuses on the discoveries that OGX has made in sandstones belongs to Santonian channelized systems. It will show the stratigraphic framework of these Santonian reservoirs and to try understanding the evolution of these systems in terms of sequence stratigraphy. Finally, it will present the OGX plans to delimit and to development this area, considering the potential of production, which was confirmed by two formation tests in different discoveries, Natal and Maceió prospects. These discoveries are the result of an aggressive investment plan and innovative exploratory vision of OGX.

Robust prediction of pay sands in clastic reservoirs with seismic inversion attributes, Campos basin, Brazil
Authors Heidy Correa-Correa, Gunnar Holmes and Joshua WoodworthThe Eocene deepwater sandstones are the main target in several fields in the Campos basin in Brazil. These sandstones are considered typical unconsolidated to partially consolidated clastic reservoirs, with porosity values in the range of 26-28%. Recent publications have shown the effectiveness of AI-SI attribute derived from seismic inversion to highlight zones of interest in clastic reservoirs, particularly in Brazil.

Intermontane basins and hydrocarbon potential at the Central to Northern Andes
Authors Wilver Hermoza, Roger baudino and Maria Baca-AlvarezIn the Central to Northern Andes transition zone (Ecuador and Northern Peru), several Tertiary intermontane basins have been preserved (e.g. Bagua Basin in Peru, Zumba, Nabon, Loja, Malacatos- Vilcabamba, Giron and Cuenca basins in Ecuador). The analysis of these intermontane basins showed similarities in their sedimentological evolution and ages of infilling; however structurally, three groups can be separated: the Cuenca and Giron-Santa Isabel basins related to dextral movement of allochtonous terranes sutures (Raspas- Peltetec; Calacali-Pallatanga-Palenque). The Loja and Vilcabamba-Malacatos basins are associated to N-S sutures activation (Las Aradas- Zamora). The third group includes the Bagua Basin and others small piggyback basins purely related to the eastward migration of the main fold and thrust deformation front of the Central Andes during the Upper Miocene. Exploration point of view, the Miocene intermontane basins often contain a thick sequence of lacustrine and/or shallow marine deposits that could host potential source rocks. Indeed, coal layers are described and were traditionally exploited for domestic use. Nevertheless, the Miocene basin fill could at depth have triggered the activation of Mesozoic and older petroleum systems. In the area of the Bagua Basin exists two potential petroleum systems. The Jurassic (Aramachay Fm) and Cretaceous (Goyllarisquizga Gp and Inca Fm) sequences have an excellent source rock potential. One oil seep sample hosted in the Upper Cretaceous reservoirs was collected in the Bagua Basin. According to its geochemical characterization it is from a marine source rock, kerogene type II and a Pre-Cretaceous age has been postulated.

“Parnaíba Basin – The Awakening of a Giant”
The Parnaíba Basin is located in a considered exploratory frontier area, in the Brazilian Northeastern Region. The basin has about 600.000km² with a sedimentary section reaching approximately 3.500m thickness in its depocenter (Fig. 1). The Parnaíba Basin returned to the oil exploratory scenery after two decades without activities, with the discovery of two gas fields, two other accumulations in delimitation stage and significant hydrocarbons shows in recent drilled wells. The Gavião Real and Gavião Azul fields are now under production development phase, and the Bom Jesus and Fazenda Torrão accumulations are being evaluated by field delimitation phase. These discoveries are the result of an aggressive investment plan and innovative exploratory vision of OGX Petróleo e Gás S. A., acting with MPX Energia S. A. and Petra Energia S. A. in seven blocks and with MPX Energia S. A. and Imetame-Delp-Orteng Consortium in one block, as partnerships, breaking old paradigms toward Paleozoic basins. Using 2D and 3D seismic data, acquired in record time, and incorporating new ideas and alternative geological models has resulted in great success to the basin so far. The great number of mapped leads to be drilled in the future, based in the updated seismic interpretation, points out an expressive hydrocarbon potential in the Parnaíba Basin increasing OGX’s portfolio by far.

An investigation of the provenance and post-depositional thermal history of the Cenozoic Amagá Formation from the transition between the Cordillera Central and Oriental, Colombia
Authors Ian Duddy, Pedro Parra Mantilla, Vicente Rodriguez and Paul GreenThe Oligo-Mioceno Amagá Formation comprises at least 1500 m of non-marine quartzose and lithic sandstones, carbonaceous shale and coals preserved in a roughly linear basin along the Cauca Valley, west of the Romeral fault system in the transition between the Western and Central Cordillera of Colombia. We have used AFTA® apatite fission track analysis and ZFTA zircon fission track analysis to provide unique constraints of the provenance and post-depositional the thermal and burial histories of a suite of Amagá Formation sandstones from the vicinity of Santa Fe de Antioquia (near Medellin). Independent constraints on the maximum temperatures experienced by associated coal seams have been determined from vitrinite reflectance data. These results have important implications for the source of the Amagá Formation sediments and the tectonic evolution of the adjacent Altiplano Antioqueño of the Central Cordillera, where AFTA data show clear evidence of kilometre-scale denudation during the Late Eocene to Early Miocene (40 to 20 Ma) and since the late Early Miocene (18 to 0 Ma), overlapping with the deposition of the Amagá Formation. The ability of AFTA to provide direct constraints on the time at which both sedimentary and “basement” sequences were uplifted and eroded in tectonically complex regions provides a powerful tool for understanding the tectonic evolution of Colombia during the Cenozoic.

Timing of deposition and assesing the characteristic of potential carbonate oil reservoir along the southeastern circum-caribbean region
Authors J.C. Silva-Tamayo, C. Montes, A. Cardona. A. Pardo, D. Rincon, C. Jaramillo, G. Bayona, V. Ramirez, E. Nińo, M. Ducea, A. Sial, S. Rosero, V. Zapata, P. Zapata, C. Osorio and C. EcheverryCenozoic coralline and calcareous algae reef carbonates have long been recognized as important oil & gas reservoirs along the Circum-Caribbean Region. Despite their high oil & gas reservoirs potential, timing the deposition of reef carbonate units along this area has remained problematic due to extreme sediment recycling and complex tectonic evolution. Here we use Sr-isotope chemostratigraphy and carbonate U-Pb geochronology to precisely date in-situ corals and calcareous algae facies from several reef carbonate successions along the SE Circum-Caribbean. Detailed stratigraphic, sedimentologic and paragenetic characteristics of the studied sucessions are contrasted against their depositional ages. This allows constraining temporal variations in the structures of the reef carbonate systems along the SE Circum-Caribbean. Predominantly highly porous calcareous algae reef carbonate sucessions characterize the Eocene-Oligocene and the middle Miocene carbonate record in central and eastern Panama and northwestern Colombia. Higly porous coralline reef carbonate fabrics, often mixed with siliciclastic sedimentary facies, characterize, in turn, the late Oligocene, the late Miocene and the Pliocene reef carbonate record from northern Colombia. The stratigraphic, sedimentologic and paragenetic characteristics of the studied successions combined with their depositional ages allow identifying time intervals of carbonate sucessions displaying different oil & gas reservoir potentials. We propose a chronostratigraphic chart with main stratigraphic, sedimentologic and paragenetic (diagenetic) features for the SE Circum-Caribbean carbonate record that can be used as a reference during the search of regionaly occurring reef carbonate oil and gas reservoirs analoges along the Caribbean.

Pitfalls in converting Time-to-Depth in complex Sub-Andean basins in Colombia
Authors Antonio Velasquez and Hector AlfonsoVelocity variations affect the quality of seismic data and hinder the interpreters from defining both structure and lithology. Structural complexity, particularly in land seismic data, is responsible for both poor imaging and getting mispositioned events in depth. In spite the advances in migration, its ability to provide right depths is quite often limited because of there is a substantial difference between the migration velocity -the best for proper imaging-, and the vertical velocity, used to perform the time-to-depth conversion (depthing). The main reason for this discrepancy is seismic anisotropy, however sometimes it cannot be adecuately included in data processing of complex areas; therefore depthing is still a crucial step in the interpretation process. Several techniques for depthing are based on vertical velocity modeling from different approaches. Using study cases in areas of complex geology, we explain advantages and limitations of the most common methods: 1) Time-Depth “Velocity” Functions, 2) Layer Cake Methods, 3) Laterally-Varying Layer Cake Modeling; and 4) Geostatistical Velocity Modeling. There is no a unique recipe for chosing one of those, but depending on the complexity and availability of high-quality data, different methods can be applied or cobined to obtain better results. Most of the pitfalls come from misunderstanding the type of velocity used for both imaging and depthing. In general, a good velocity model is the one that better honor the data and reproduce the geologic trends at the same time. From the real case studies, we propose Laterally-Varying Layer Cake and Geostatistical velocity models as standar procedures for depthing in Andean complex structures.

High resolution imaging for subtle geological features in the Llanos basin
Authors Paul Cunningham, David Behrman and Michael SmithWe demonstrate in a seismic processing project from the Llanos basin in Colombia that increasing bandwidth prior to migration can improve the spatial (lateral and vertical) resolution and the subsequent velocity analysis can produce a more detailed velocity profile which in turn improves image quality. The increase in bandwidth prior to migration reduces both vertical and lateral wavelet widths and, thus, increases spatial resolution. The improved spatial resolution in turn permits a more detailed velocity field to be defined both laterally and vertically. This approach, bandwidth expansion prior to migration, can be applied to both time and depth migration flows. We apply the high resolution imaging technique to the relatively thin Oligocene to Early Miocene Carbonera sandstones from the Llanos basin. Traps are typically three-way structural closures bounded by faults with relatively small throws. Using the highresolution imaging, the thin sands, their lateral pinchouts and the fault locations can be more accurately mapped reducing exploration risk.

Seismic attributes on frequency-enhanced seismic data
Authors Chopra Satinder and Kurt MarfurtSeismic data are usually contaminated by both random and coherent noise, even when the data have been migrated reasonably well and are multiple-free. Seismic attributes are particularly effective at extracting subtle features from relatively noise-free data. Certain types of noise can be addressed by the interpreter through careful structure-oriented filtering or post migration footprint suppression. However, if the data are contaminated by multiples or are poorly focused and imaged due to inaccurate velocities, the data need to go back to the processing team to alleviate those problems. Another common problem with seismic data is their relatively low bandwidth. Significant efforts are made during processing to enhance the frequency content of the data as much as possible to provide a spectral response that is consistent with the acquisition parameters. The interpreters will have a better understanding of the geology, the play concept, access to any well data, and therefore be better able to keep or reject alternative filter products that are consistent or inconsistent with the interpretation hypothesis. We begin our discussion by reviewing alternative means of suppressing random noise on our migrated seismic images, with the most promising methods being various implementations of structure-oriented filtering. Next, we address acquisition footprint, which may appear to be random in the temporal domain but is highly correlated to the acquisition geometry in the spatial domain. After running the data through the cleaning phase, we evaluate alternative methods for frequency enhancement of the input seismic data. We conclude with a summary on the choice of the frequency-enhancement methods on the basis of the examples generated with different workflows.

Volume co-rendering of seismic attributes - a great aid to seismic interpretation
Authors Chopra Satinder and Kurt MarfurtTraditional three-dimensional seismic interpretation was built on 2D work flows and consisted of interpreting a grid of inlines and crosslines from 3D seismic volumes. Such interpretation does not account for the information that exists in the third direction. Besides, conventional seismic amplitude visualization may not display subtle features such as identification of minor faults and thin sands, for which seismic attributes have been designed to enhance one or more components of seismic amplitude such as phase and structural relationships. Significant efforts in the last few years have shown the advantages of interpretation on time and horizon slices, geobody detection as well as multivolume and multiattribute co-rendering. Beginning with the early methods using directional illumination for enhancing subtle fault edges, followed by methods using false-color image techniques (RGB) for merging spectral components, we discuss with the help of examples the need for visualization of seismic attributes using volume co-rendering, keeping in mind the objectives of integration of data and value addition in interpretation. 3D visualization capability when adopted for seismic data interpretation can be a powerful tool that could integrate the different types of data. In addition to seismic data, well log curves (vertical and horizontal), VSP data (2D and 3D), microseismic data, all brought together in a 3D viewer not only provide a convincing visual corroboration of the available data, but also lends higher level of confidence to the interpreter. The future visualization development will be aimed at integrating multi-disciplinary data, which is what is required for meaningful reservoir characterization. The future in visualization is expected to offer unprecedented capabilities which will continue to amaze us.

Volumetric estimates of seismic reflector rotation and convergence
Authors Chopra Satinder and Kurt MarfurtGeometric attributes such as coherence and curvature are commonly used for mapping structural deformation and depositional environment. Although they are excellent at delineating a subset of seismic stratigraphic features (such as shale-dewatering polygons, injectites, collapse features, mass transport complexes, and overbank deposits) they have only limited value in imaging classic seismic stratigraphy features such as onlap, progradation and erosional truncation. We examine how the newer volumetric attributes can facilitate and quantify the use of seismic stratigraphic analysis workflows to large 3D seismic volumes. Due to the distinct change in reflector dip and/or terminations, erosional unconformities and in particular angular unconformities are relatively easy to recognize on vertical seismic sections. Although there will often be a low-coherence anomaly where reflectors of conflicting dip intersect, these anomalies take considerable skill to interpret. Application of attributes based on the description of seismic reflection patterns can be used to map angular unconformities amongst other features. The convergence/divergence of reflections can be defined by computing the vertical derivative of apparent dip at a userdefined azimuth, and have been extended to 3D reflector convergence azimuth and magnitude estimates. Compressive deformation and wrench faulting cause the fault blocks to rotate. The extent of rotation depends on the size, the comprising lithology and the stress levels. Fault block rotation can also control depositional processes by providing increased accommodation space in subsiding areas and erosional processes in uplifted areas. In view of this importance of the rotation of the fault blocks, we present a seismic attribute that measures the reflector rotation at every sample in the seismic data volume. Application of the reflector convergence and rotation about the normal attributes on two different 3D seismic volumes from Alberta, Canada yields convincing results.

Euler curvature for observing fracture lineaments
Authors Chopra Satinder and Kurt MarfurtOver the last several years, seismic curvature attributes have been shown to be very useful in the interpretation of flexures and folds which can often be associated with conjugate faults and fractures. Although many curvature measures that have been introduced, we find the most-positive and most-negative principal curvatures k1 and k2 to be the most useful. All other curvature attributes can be derived from the two principal curvatures. For example, some practitioners have found that the components of apparent curvature projected parallel to the dip azimuth and strike of a dipping plane to be useful in given tectonic and stress settings. In this study we describe the theory and application of Euler curvature, which is a generalization of the dip and strike components of curvature in any user-defined direction. Since reflector dip magnitude and azimuth can vary considerably across a seismic survey, it is more useful to equally sample azimuths of Euler curvature on the horizontal x-y plane, project these lines onto the local dipping plane of the reflector, and compute Euler curvature along a given strike direction. The Euler curvature attribute has the advantage that it can be computed from the conventional final migrated stacked volume to obtain the attributes in different azimuthal directions. In this manner, azimuthally-dependent lineament intensity volumes can be correlated to natural and induced fractures seen in image logs to better quantify the presence of natural fracture sweet spots perpendicular to today’s minimum horizontal stress field. We describe the application of Euler curvature to two different 3D seismic volumes from northeast British Columbia, Canada and show that this attribute is useful for the interpretation of lineament features in desired azimuthal directions.

Non-hyperbolic MultiFocusing improves depth imaging
Authors Alex Berkovitch, Kostya Deev, Marianne Rauch-Davies and Evgeny LandaMultiFocusing technology can dramatically improve the quality of seismic imaging especially in cases of low fold data, poor signal- to- noise ratio and sparse 3D acquisition. At the same time, local parameters of the observed wavefield in prestack seismic records are of great interest for many seismic applications such as signal enhancement, velocity model building, etc. We propose to employ the MultiFocusing idea to achieve this goal. A local common offset MultiFocusing approximation for travel time stacking surface description is used. It allows accurately approximate travel times of reflection events in the vicinity of arbitrary location and arbitrary offset. We present the implementation of two applications: a signal enhancement scheme and velocity model construction by prestack stereotomography. We will also demonstrate efficiency of the proposed applications.

Geophysical expression of Late Oligocene-Early Miocene Reservoirs in the Guarrojo area, Llanos Basin of Colombia: from reconnaissance to simultaneous 3D seismic inversion
Authors M. De Freitas, I.C. Flores and J.A. MoraThe Guarrojo block, in the Llanos Basin of Colombia, is a case history of successful exploration where geophysical tools were progressively used from regional, reconnaissance work through to prospect definition, field development and further exploration. Prospective areas were identified with coarse airborne gravity-magnetics and 2D seismic (2005-2006). The first well (Ocelote-1, 2007) resulted in a significant oil discovery in sandstones of the Oligocene Carbonera (C7) Formation. The Ocelote field is currently producing 20,000 bopd, with significant untested potential. Two 3D seismic surveys covering 378 km2 were acquired (2007, 2009) and merged. Seismic interpretation and attribute analyses of pstm and psdm volumes were used for field appraisal and development. In addition, amplitude anomalies and coherence patterns suggested narrow, low sinuosity channels as upside potential in the Carbonera C5 member. The first C5 channel drilled in 2008 resulted in a significant oil discovery. Simultaneous 3D seismic inversion (P-S impedance) allowed for improved characterization of the C7 reservoir, but no fluid discrimination. Nevertheless, the inversion yielded improved estimation of both rock and fluid types of the overlying C5, C3 and C1 members. Sand-prone C5 channels were mapped with enhanced detail and P-S impedance cross-plots potentially discriminate water vs. oil bearing zones. Inversion prediction of oil pools failed in the first new well. Further to a new 3D acquisition and merge (2010), a feasibility analysis including more wells still suggests the power to discriminate fluids. Upon completion of a new run of the simultaneous inversion, additional C5, C7 prospects will be ranked and tested.

Characterization of the Ciénaga de Oro Formation in the Saman Block, Lower Magdalena Basin, Colombia, using 3D Seismic Inversion and Facies Analysis
Authors M. De Freitas, V.R. Vélez, A. Mesa and J.A. Mora3D seismic-based lithologic characterization of the Oligo-Miocene Cienaga de Oro Formation (COF) was performed in a ~500 sqkm area (Saman) of the Lower Madgalena Basin, Colombia. Facies variations and discontinuities of the COF make the reservoir distribution and quality the critical exploration risk in the basin. The study integrates seismic attributes, facies analysis and inversion (P-impedance), calibrated to 7 wells. The COF overlies an igneous-metamorphic basement, which forms a high amplitude seismic reflector. Both the top and the internal character of the COF present variations across the area. These reflect lithologic changes that can be recognized to some extent with amplitude and other seismic attributes from the pstm volume. However, a significant improvement in the characterization of the COF was obtained with 3D acoustic inversion and seismic facies analysis. The P-impedance volume allowed for an improved discrimination of different depositional events, interpreted as transgressive deposits advancing SE-wards. The basal section, with a very high P-impedance response, is restricted to the northern area and correlates with immature, coarse-grained deposits with poor reservoir properties. The upper section shows a discontinuous distribution of sandstones (exploration target) and shales, with the sand-prone facies correlating to moderate-high P-impedance and the shales to lowest values. Seismic facies analysis, where the variations of the wave form between top and base of the COF were subdivided into eight discrete responses, was performed both in unsupervised mode and constrained by wells. This helped further discriminating prospective (sand-prone) and non-prospective zones (shales or tight sands / conglomerates).

Structural Linking of the Recetor and Piedemonte Areas, and Implications for Hydrocarbon Accumulations, Eastern Cordillera, Colombia
Authors David Richards and Claudia CeballosThe frontal zone of the Eastern Cordillera fold and thrust belt hosts the large fields of Cusiana and Cupiagua that have a long history of production, and as well, there is newer production from thrust sheets to the northeast, in the Recetor, Piedemonte and Niscota blocks (1, 2, 3). The area is structurally complicated and good seismic imaging has proven difficult to obtain in the areas northeast of the Cupiagua-main Recetor structural complex. Effective exploration and development rely on a detailed structural modeling workflow of 2D and 3D balancing, based heavily on well data, in order to achieve a structurally valid 3D seismic interpretation. Drilling based on the resulting 3D structural model has proven successful. The focus of this paper is the structural transition from the main Recetor area to the Piedemonte area. The structural style and trend of the productive and prospective thrust sheets change from the Recetor area to the Piedemonte area. In the main Recetor area, there is one primary producing thrust sheet with limited stacking of the Mirador and other reservoir units. In contrast, from northern Recetor through the Piedemonte area and continuing into the Niscota area there are stacked sheets of the producing reservoirs, with the sheets increasing in number to the northeast, corresponding to increased shortening in the northeastern part of the area in discussion. The overlying Nunchia syncline reflects the change in style and aids in interpretation of the deeper structure. The change in trend and slip direction relates to an area with slight alongstrike shortening, and this component of shortening contributes to development of culminations along strike. The structural modeling has resulted in identification of several opportunities in the area, as well as providing a guide to well planning and reserve estimations.

National Geoscience Laboratory Network – RNLG
More LessIn many industrialized and developed countries, universities play a key leadership role in academic, research and innovation processes. The Colombia Hydrocarbon Agency (ANH) and the Colombia science foundation (COLCIENCIAS) created an initiative to develop a national Geoscience Laboratory network (RNLG). The RNLG is a technical system that integrates several laboratories belonging to twelve public and private institutions in the field of Geosciences, including universities (EAFIT, UCALDAS, UIS, UNAL, UNIANDES, and UPTC), private institutions (ICP) and public institutions (Colombian Geologic Survey and the Geographic Agustin Codazzi Institute). The integration of these entities allows the RNLG to develop technologies and applications in high priority earth science areas including regional geological analysis, thermocronological, paleomagnetic, bioestratigraphic, and geochemical studies, and remote sensing techniques. The RNLG´s mission is focused on establishing and consolidating high quality laboratories for teaching, research and extension, which in turn generates strategic alliances among its members, government and industry, for the understanding and evaluation of conventional and unconventional hydrocarbon resources, in order to reduce uncertainty in decision-making in the development of the hydrocarbon sector. This will be reflected in encouraging private investment in the exploration and exploitation of hydrocarbons in the country.

Integrating coherence and seismic inversion for imaging thin bed channel deposits
Authors Carlos Molinares, Richard Brito, Oswaldo davogustto and Kurt MarfurtThis paper describes the advantages of combining energyweighted coherent amplitude gradients, coherence and seismic inversion cubes, for imaging thin bed deposits. These features are related to distributary channel deltaic deposits associated with a transgressive Lower Miocene sequence, located in northwestern Colombia (South America). Because the rapid lateral variations and thickness below tuning resolution, these transgressive channel reservoirs are complicated to develop efficiently and it is difficult to characterize or successfully map them using conventional seismic attributes (e.g. RMS amplitude). Our coherence and energy-weighted coherent amplitude gradients volumes provides high resolution images of lateral variations within the seismic volume, illuminating channels and faults but provide little insight as to which seismic facies may be present. In contrast, our seismic inversion volumes is directly sensitive to lithology and porosity; when coupled with well control it can be used for lithologic and stratigraphic interpretations. These volumes present an unbiased image volume that allow interpreters and reservoir engineers to: 1) display stratigraphic geobodies, 2) compare producing intervals, and 3) predict reservoir continuity for an integrated reservoir characterization.

Geometric Seismic Attributes for Imaging High Angle Faults and Thin Beds in the Magangue High, Northwestern Colombia
Authors Carlos Molinares, Kurt Marfurt and Victor RamirezNew natural gas discoveries in the Magangue High (Northwestern Colombia) brings new exploration opportunities but also new challenging conditions in an underexplored area. The principal reservoir is related to the Lower Miocene transgressive sandstones (Cienaga de Oro Formation), characterized by a high-energy well-connected marginal marine channel system that ended isolated thin tidal channels. The secondary reservoir is related to early Late Miocene Basal Porquero Formation turbidite sandstones. These two intervals are limited by normal faults, which both generate trap and compartmentalize the reservoir. The first objective of this work was to better map high-angle faults. Seismic attributes such as eigenstructure coherence are sensitive only to waveform changes while others such as Sobel filters and variance are sensitive to both waveform and amplitude changes. In contrast, attributes such as the most-positive and most-negative principal curvatures are sensitive to more diffuse fault zones that appear as flexures. The second objective was to apply geometric seismic attributes sensitive to amplitude changes to image channel features with thickness possibly below tuning resolution. Applying this workflow are able to image thin tidal channels and sand flats that give rise to amplitude changes. We interpret the amplitude contrast between channel infill and surrounding matrix as representing more sandy intervals. We interpret other channels as filled with clay plugs, with reservoir characterization consequences. Co-rendering coherence attributes combined with the principal curvatures were effective in mapping normal faults in the Magangue Arc, key to reservoir characterization and well planning phases.

Advances in acquiring real-time data using wireless technology
Authors Doug Crice, Roy Kligfield and William ScottLand seismic acquisition has traditionally relied on the use of cables to power the acquisition instruments and to transport the seismic data to a central recorder. However, the logistical issues relating to the use of cables to connect acquisition instruments is a serious handicap. The problems of deploying and maintaining cabled networks, relocating cables in order to move the spread, and repairing cables have acted as constraints on the growth in size and scope of land seismic acquisition projects worldwide. In the recent past, two approaches are being adapted in order to overcome these barriers. In athe first approach, instruments are being deployed as autonomous “blind” nodes whose data has to be collected and transcribed in order to make it ready for processing. In a new approach, instruments are being deployed with the capability to wirelessly transport the seismic data to a central location in real time. Whereas the nodal approach has been successful at eliminating the use of cables, it introduces the need to visit the instruments physically to collect (harvest) the data from the instruments and to prepare the downloaded data (transcription) for input into industry standard formats. The nodal approach precludes any chance of viewing the seismic data immediately. This presentation reviews the initial results of field deployments using a system with realtime wireless data collection, usable in both remote and urban environments. A review of some of the system capabilities and limitations in terms of network throughputs, radio interference issues in urban environments, and the use of different sources will be given. Based on its initial deployments, the solution is entirely capable of being scaled up to support the large channel counts demanded in land seismic operations.

Effects of Paleogene Subduction on Basin Segmentation and Oil Migration in NW South America
Authors German Bayona, Agustin Cardona, Carlos Jaramillo, Camilo Montes and Andres MoraIn the Northern Andes, inversion of Mesozoic extensional structures controlled location of synorogenic successions, dispersal of detritus and migration pathways since Paleocene time. Detailed tectonostratigraphic analysis conducted in several basins of NW South America indicate that reactivation of former normal faults broke the single Late Cretaceous basin into different depocenters. In the Paleocene to early Eocene, reverse reactivation broke the syn-orogenic basin into two depocenters. The western depocenter (Magdalena and Rancheria basins) was bounded to the west by eastward-tilted crustal blocks and to the east by reactivated structures; crustal tilting and Paleocene marginal and intraplate magmatism were associated to subduction of the buoyant Caribbean plate. Reactivation of older structures migrated eastward and disrupted the eastern depocenter (presently along the axial zone of the Eastern Cordillera, Llanos foothills, Llanos, Catatumbo and western Maracaibo basin). Basin configuration and patterns of deformation changed drastically in middle Eocene time, as subduction of the buoyant Caribbean plate stopped. Strike-slip deformation and localized burial process that favored for oil maduration along western depocenters (southern and middle Magdalena Valley) depict marginal deformation associated to northward migration of the Caribbean plate,. In contrast, quiescence in eastern depocenters favored deposition of reservoir units. As subduction process renewed in Oligocene time, deformation spreadout. The uplift of the bivergent Eastern Cordillera broke definitively the connection of eastern and western depocenters, and began the segmentation of the Llanos basin from the axial zone of the Eastern Cordillera.

High Dimensional Interpolation and Regularization in Exploration
Authors Jaim Stein and Robert WojslawRegularization and Interpolation in higher dimensions has become an important tool in the processing arsenal of any geophysicist. The reasons for interpolation and regularization of data are many. Some noise elimination techniques work better on regular data sets and some even demand it. Also imaging algorithms, whether it is Prestack Time or Prestack Depth migrations produce better results if the data has been regularized a priori, than during the migration, putting less demand on the migration weights, which are, in general still poorly understood.

Dual coil – long offset full azimuth towed streamer acquisition
Authors Tim Bunting, Tim Brice and Nick MoldoveanuOver the last twelve years significant advances have been made to mitigate for the limited azimuth range of towed streamer geometries and subsequently improve imaging in areas of high geological complexity, such as the Gulf of Mexico pre-salt provinces. These advances include acquiring the survey multiple times in different azimuths (MAZ) and acquiring the survey using multiple vessels (WAZ). More recently Coil Shooting has been deployed which utilizes a single towed streamer vessel following a circular pre-plot. However, even with these sophisticated surface geometries, recent experience has shown that the most complex of Gulf of Mexico geologies are still non-optimally imaged. Through a series of modeling efforts, using ray tracing and two-way wave equation methods, the WesternGeco technical team in Houston determined that to solve these most complex imaging problems a ultra-long offset full azimuth measurement was required. The same technical team used these new geometry requirements to develop a new acquisition technique of which Dual Coil is the result. The Dual Coil technique uses four vessels (two recording vessels and two source vessels), sailing in 12.5-km-diameter slightly offset circles. The source vessels sail at the tail of the respective recording spreads and the two recording vessels maintain 180 degrees separation. Ultra-long offsets are achieved by sources shooting across the coil (Moldoveanu and Kapoor 2009; Brice 2011). These circular “lines” are repeated in both directions to build up fold, offset distribution and azimuth distribution. At the time of writing, three dual coil surveys have been acquired in the Gulf of Mexico covering over 550 OCS blocks (13,000km 2). Each with different acquisition and imaging challenges. The final images will take over a year to complete using an intensive data processing flow including variable water velocity correction, 3D Surface Related Multiple Attenuation (SRME) and tilted transverse isotropy model building and imaging. However fast track images were generated on-board and delivered less than a week after completion of acquisition operations. Even using this preliminary model and Isotropic assumptions there is a clear improvement in imaging, when compared to the underlying WAZ image. As well as a general improvement in illumination and signal to noise, the sand beds terminating against the salt body are much easier to interpret. While the Dual Coil technique has been developed to solve specific imaging problems in the Gulf of Mexico associated with large complex salt bodies, there is no reason to think that it would not be appropriate for other difficult-to-image areas around the world such as where thick layers of basalt are present or where carbonate layers distort the ray-paths.

Point source and point receiver acquisition – potential benefits for columbia
By Tim BuntingWhile land point source and point receiver acquisition is gaining acceptance in certain regional and geological settings its uptake in Latin America has been limited. Historically the industry has tried to solve the problems of surface noise on land seismic surveys by increasing source and receiver effort by using large arrays and by sending lots of signal energy into the ground. Point source and receiver techniques attempt to resolve the problems associated with the complex noise field on land surveys in a more scientific way, by measuring the linear noise modes as faithfully as possible i.e. un-aliased or not disturbed by the use of geophone arrays. In 2007 WesternGeco acquired a point receiver 2D survey at the base of the Al-Hajar mountain range close to Dubai in the UAE at the edge of the Oman thrust belt. The geology is very complex with steeply dipping structure. The survey was acquired on top of a 2003 3D survey out the two acquisitions used radically different approaches, some of which are detailed in table 1. In addition to the use of point receivers and compact source groups, the bandwidth of the sweep was extended at the low end. The final 2007 PSDM images showed significant uplift above the 2003 PSTM processing. The signal to noise is much better, to the point where it is possible to interpret the structural geometry with some level of confidence. It is difficult to draw absolute conclusions when comparing the 2003 time image with the 2007 depth image because of the use of a depth imaging solution. However, the uplift in the pre-imaging measurement will not only benefit the imaging solution but all additional processes, most specifically the velocity modeling which is critical to the depth imaging effort. The combination of all these incremental uplifts can result in significant overall improvement in imaging quality.

Advances in marine seismic acquisition
Authors Thomas Elboth, Hakon Aune, Eric de Graaff, Margherita Maraschini and Steve ColeLong offset wide azimuth seismic, simultaneous sources (blended acquisition) and ocean bottom nodes are technologies that have been developed in order to fulfill the goals of faster, cheaper and better seismic. In this paper we will present results from recent field tests where we have combined several of these technologies. New and improved hardware makes it possible to control the positions of both sources and streamers with very high (decimeter) accuracy. With recent engineering and processing algorithm advances, it is also possible to acquire blended data (i.e., firing sources at multiple shot locations within a single seismic record), and deblend the data efficiently. By combining source and streamer steering with blended acquisition, we can choose to double the cross-line sampling of 3D and 4D surveys, or acquire extra azimuths (WAZ) without the need to reduce in-line sampling, all in the same time it would take to acquire a conventional survey. By combining these techniques with advanced tools like Fresnel zone binning, we can also significantly reduce the need for infill shooting. In short, we get data faster, cheaper and better. The use of simultaneous sources also offers exciting opportunities when combined with ocean bottom nodes. The extra source(s) efficiently contribute to a higher trace count or reduced acquisition time. De-blending, i.e. the technology of separating data coming from several sources is a key software component in all of these approaches.

Expanding the role of cable-less equipment in seismic operations
By J. CrissCable-less technology for seismic acquisition has evolved and grown over the last few years. As of Jan 2012, it is estimated that there are over 170,000 cable-less seismic acquisition nodes at work worldwide on over 40 systems. Cable-less seismic equipment poses new challenges in operations, not because it is more difficult to use but because the systems require crews to learn new skill sets and view equipment optimization in a new light. Experience is growing with cable-less systems in the fields of improving operation efficiency, designing more flexible surveys, and meeting tighter project management deadlines. The role of cable-less seismic acquisition equipment is expanding with increased confidence gained by successes in production work, leading toward a brighter future for cable-less seismic hardware systems. This paper will investigate the concerns surrounding system design, the benefits and trade-offs, and the critical factors that made cable-less systems the best solution for some recent successful projects.
