Anisotropic Velocity Models
By C.H. ChapmanAn essential pre-requisite for successful 3D pre-stack depth migration in structurally complicated situations is an accurate background velocity. Building such a model, even for isotropic velocities, is still difficult despite advances in 3D model building, ray tracing and velocity analysis. In complicated models, velocity anisotropy will be important to image structures with significant variations in dip, e.g. faults or salt domes. The evidence for anisotropy is strong, and a few theoretical and case studies have illustrated its importance in migration.

Ellipsoidal Approximation of Velocities in Orthorhombic Media
Authors Pedro Contreras, Héctor Klíe, Carmen Mora and reinaldo J. MichelenaThis paper introduces an ellipsoidal approximation of group velocities of the P-, SJ- and S2-wave propagation modes in an orthorhombic media. This new approximation is valid for small angles near the vertical direction. The approach is based on transformations that map ellipsoids in the phase domain onto ellipsoids in the group domain. Phase angles can be directly translated into group angles and the reciprocal of phase velocities into the group velocities. The framework developed is simple but represents a powerful device to approximate group velocities and interpret data recorded on orthorhombic media.

Quasi-isotropic Approximation of the qS Wave Green Function in Inhomogeneous Weakly Anisotropic Media
By Ivan PŝenèíkFormulae for the leading vectorial term of the qS wave Green function in an unbounded inhomogeneous weakly anisotropic medium obtained using the so-called quasi-isotropic (QI) approximation are presented. The basic idea of this approximation is the assumption that the deviation of the tensor of elastic parameters of a weakly anisotropic medium from the tensor of elastic parameters of a nearby "background" isotropic medium is approximately of the order (I)-I for (I) -t 00. Under this assumption, the procedure of constructing the Green function consists of two steps: (i) calculation of rays, travel times, the geometrical spreading and polarization vectors in the background isotropic medium; (ii) calculation of corrections of travel times, amplitudes and of the polarization due to the deviation of the weakly anisotropic medium from the isotropic background at termination points of rays. The QI approximation removes the well-known problems of the standard ray method for anisotropic media in regions, in which the difference between the phase velocities of qS waves is small. This is the case of weakly anisotropic media as well as of qS wave singular regions such as vicinities of, for example, kiss and intersection singularities. The formulae for the leading vectorial term of the qS wave Green function in the QI approximation are thus regular everywhere except singular regions of the ray method for isotropic media. The formula for the Green function consists of two expressions corresponding to qSl and qS2 waves. When differences between the phase velocities of the two qS waves vary relatively strongly (for example in a vicinity of qS wave singularities), the frequency-dependent amplitudes in the zero-order QI approximation are obtained by a numerical solution of two coupled first-order differential equations along a ray in the background isotropic medium. When the differences of the phase velocities do not vary (the medium is homogeneous) or vary only modestly, the closed-form solutions of the two coupled equations can be found. The qS waves in the latter case are thus decoupled. In the limit of infinitely weak anisotropy, the presented formulae smoothly converge to formulae for isotropic media. For stronger anisotropy, the formulae converge to the formulae for the standard ray method for anisotropic media.

Comportamento dos Coeficientes de Reflexăo e Transmissăo em Meios Fraturados
Authors I.A. Simőes Filho, J.S. Tinen, J.C. Costa, J.S. Protázio, C.E.B.S. Abreu and F.A.P.S.

Reciprocal Volume and Surface Integrals for Anisotropic Elastic Media
Authors Bjorn Ursin and Martin TygelThe Born (volume) and the Kirchhoff-Helmholtz (surface) integrals have traditionally been treated as completely separate formulations in the studies of reflection and transmission of waves due to smooth interfaces. A simple use of the divergence theorem applied to the Born volume integral gives a reciprocal surface scat-tering integral, which can be seen as a natural link between the two formulations. This unifying integral has been recently derived in the context of inversion. Its main properties are investigated by a stationary-phase evaluation, and the result is interpreted in ray theoretical terms.

Authors I.A. Simőes Filho, J.Q. Castro, A.Z. Remacre and J.A.

2.9-D Crosswell Traveltime Tomography
Authors Jessé Costa, Jerry Harris and Mark van SchaakThe acquisition geometry of the multiple surveys at the second phase of the. McElroy project provided the opportunity of reconstructing a 3-D slowness model from crosswell data only. This led us to the implementation of traveltime inversion algorithm for 3-D slowness reconstruction. The model is parameterized by the slowness values at nodes on a prismatic mesh. A slowness field is estimated from the joint inversion of arrival times from multiple crosswell surveys. The algorithm is applied to the post CO2 injection tomographic surveys of the McElroy project and to produce a time-Iapsed tomogram from the surveys taken before and after injection. The time-lapsed tomogram presents an anomaly at the reservoir region unambiguously related to the injection process.

Reservoir Characterization Using Seismic Event Attributes and Neural Networks
Authors Jurandyr Schmidt and Marcos Sebastiăo dos SantosThis paper presents an approach to map reservoir physical properties using event-based seismic attributes and neural networks. The technique uses single trace windowed seismic attributes and well log reservoir physical properties to train the neural network. After the training, the response of the neural network over all of the windowed seismic data set is a map with the reservoir physical property. The technique applied on actual data shows excellent results. The neural nets have attracted considerable interest in the recent years, due to the acknowledgment of its potential on doing a variety of routine and exhausting jobs of classification. This kind of job is found in the most diversified fields of activity, such as the processing of signals and the definition of patterns, where the neural networks appear as potential alternative to the numerical computation. One of its best characteristics is the versatility in learning a mapping unknown function within the input data and the expected result, making the correlation possible. In the seismic exploration, many references about the subject are found, some of which, are hereby mentioned. Kou- Yuang Huang et al (1990) used neural networks to pick seismic horizons. J. Schmidt and F. A. Hadsell (1992) used neural networks for seismic stacking velocity picking and D. H. Johnston (1993) for seismic attributes calibration. C. T. Kalkomey (1997) pointed out the potential risks when using seismic attributes as predictors of reservoir properties. C. Gastaldi et al (1997) shown an example of the application of seismic attributes for reservoir characterization.

Seismic Resolution Unit. A Measure for Reservoir Description
Authors Rogério Santos and Ricardo RubioA methodology for reservoir seismic interpretation is presented and a new concept of seismic attribute mapping is introduced which seeks for the definition of a reference seismic resolution measure to be used with the further seismic dependent reservoir tasks: the seismic resolution unit - SRU. The utility of a differential reservoir mapping unit from those used on the exploration phase, arises from the geology and engineering development need of having an enhanced image of reservoir structures and their physical properties, associating this image to a measurement that indicates both how the internal discontinuities, local petrophysical variations and differential lithofacies are defined, and how are their relationships with feasible fluid flow simulation units. One xample of a SRU based on 3D seismic impedance (e.g., a volume-based impedance) is presented, based on a interpretative ternary ystem which establishes a bulk litho-physical unit, considering lithological and petrophysical factors. This unit is considered as a reference, in seismic analysis scale, to a subdivision for a certain reservoir. These concepts are being applied in an offshore Brazilian field - for tertiary turbidites reservoirs - to guide further modeling, inversion, geostatistical and mapping works at the description phase that will support its development based on horizontal wells.
