Abstract

Gold is associated with a diversity of geological parameters and regional settings. Because of this
diversity, the mode of occurrence rather than genesis, age, or regional setting has been largely
documented for gold. Known gold distribution in South Africa appears largely structurally controlled
and the bulk of occurrences are in the central (Wits Basin) and eastern (Barberton, Murchison, etc.)
parts of the Kaapvaal Craton (Fig.1). Vast areas of the country remain therefore 'devoid of' gold and it
is unclear whether this reflects a lack of prospectivity or favorable geologic environments. Relative to
elsewhere in Africa there is good geological and geophysical data that can be suitably used to assess
the probability of (economic) gold occurrence over South Africa.
