Abstract

Surveys for the detection of underground pipes are a statutory requirement in the United
Kingdom (UK) in the construction and water supply industries. The volume of surveys
undertaken suggests that this is a multi-million dollar operation with surveys being
undertaken by surveyors rather than geophysicists. The reasons for this approach are
examined and the problems associated with the detection of underground pipes with
geophysical methods are discussed.
