Abstract

Located on the border of the Eurasian and African plates, Northern Algeria, Thénia (Boumerdes region) is the site of an important seismic activity whose recent earthquake of magnitude Mw = 6.8 (US GS) is the most important event in the Maghreb. It occurred in the region of Boumerdes (Algeria), which corresponds to the eastern part of the Mitidja basin, and caused heavy human and material losses. Despite a lot of researches realized since this event, the tectonic activity related to this area is still poor documented. We present here some structural and geological information resulting from the interpretation of a ground survey gravity data. This information may constitute a useful document in seismic hazard assessment.
