Abstract

In order to represent a two-dimensional seismic velocity field defined by a salt dome model, the Haar wavelet is used. It allows us to construct a basis of functions, that satisfies certain properties, and is able to decompose any piecewise continuous function in a linear combination of elements of such basis. It is proposed a strategy to reduce dimension of the basis elements, in order to simplify mathematics and save computer processing time, by the use of a one-dimensional function that works like an irregular grid on the model. As result, an image of the salt dome model is generated with a satisfactory degree of accuracy with respect to the original model.
