Abstract

One third of the land area in Finland is covered with peat and there are parts of Northern Finland where mires can account as much as 50-70 0,10 of the land area. Even though efforts have been made to construct most of the roads on a hard and bearing soil there are hundreds of kilometers of roads and highways in Finland built over peat bogs, most of them resting on the peat itself.
