Abstract

A fault or fracture can be modelled as a surface across which stress traction is assumed to be continuous, yet displacement is allowed to be discontinuous. The simplest model that accounts for the effect of such a surface on seismic waves takes the traction vector and the displacement discontinuity vector to be linearly related by a `fracture compliance matrix'.
