Abstract

In the last thirty years, great research effort has been given to developing the finite element method, mainly in the fluid dynamics and structural engineering fields. The method has been applied also to seismic wave propagation, but it has not gained large acceptance among geophysicists because, in its classical formulation, it has a quite low accuracy and computational efficiency.
