Abstract
Summary
The full-waveform inversion approach is applied to 3D VSP data for reconstructing an orthorhombic medium that is an effective representation of an elastic vertically transverse isotropic (VTI) medium with fracture-induced anisotropy. The aim of this work is to perform a feasibility study of recovering anisotropic parameters for horizontally layered media near the borehole. In some cases, the azimuthal angle of fractures (i.e. the symmetry axis of anisotropy) can be known inexactly, so it is necessary to invert also for the angle of fractures. The data from walk-around VSP acquisition with an addition of zero-offset data is enough to recover all orthorhombic parameters and the azimuth angle successfully.
