Abstract

A major improvement in knowledge processes involving better specification of knowledge contents, structures and interlinking is required by present increase, in complexity as well as in depth, of the learning, the research and development (R&D) process, and also of the development of competences process. Concept mapping allows the identification of concepts inside a specific knowledge area and represents such concepts in a hierarchical and relational architecture. Concepts and groups of related concepts are the basic elements of conceptual geological models applied to finding and producing petroleum. Concept maps of the petroleum geology knowledge area were designed following levels of concept specification: petroleum geology, petroleum system, reservoir system, reservoir modelling and the like. The concept maps may be interlinked. Links of concepts with contents such as texts, figures, presentations, homepages and others may be pointed. Concept maps of petroleum geology may be continuously improved and detailed, according to knowledge identification and evolution.
