Summary

OMV is convinced the technology of a powered drill string with electric power and bidirectional data flow along the entire string down to the bit will change the dynamics of drilling operations tremendously. The availability of high resolution MWD, LWD, and along string measurement data in real time will decrease operational risk, time, and cost. To prove this technology OMV ran the PDS powered drill string of the company TDE on the surface section of one of its wells in the Vienna basin. The results are very promising. No connection failed to transmit power and data throughout drilling the entire surface section. Along string measurement were constantly received. Now it is important to investigate the benefits for the drilling and subsurface team in detail to get a grip on the overall benefits of this technology.
