Abstract

Summary

A focused geological exploration program in northeast Switzerland is ongoing to fully examine potential candidate sites for deep geological repositories. Sonic logging was an integral component of the extensive acquisition program and represented critical inputs to the overall assessment of the sites by providing direct input on the mechanical properties, stresses and identification of possible fractures and faults and serving as a well-tie to acquired seismic data

Advanced dipole sonic logging provides not only good compressional and shear slowness measurements but also additional critical answers when examining overall rock integrity. Examples of the application of sonic to rock integrity are found in a wireline sonic logging campaign conducted with the objective of examining candidate locations for constructing radioactive waste repositories. The sonic logging links core data to a continuous description of the formations while also providing an understanding of how observed heterogeneities, fractures and faults extend in the vicinity of the borehole, thus bridging the gap with the lower resolution seismic data.
