Abstract
Summary
In southern Poland, the mining industry caused diverse wastes to be produced and stored (post-mining waste, tailings from flotation, washing, and smelting). Perennial storage of industrial waste leads to pollutions of soil, surface, and underground water. Trace elements and toxic organic compounds in wastes are mobilised by surface runoff and the infiltration of rainwater into the ground. Thus the soil in the dump vicinity is contaminated. Such pollution can spread over a long distance.
