Petroleum potential and exploration challenges of ex-USSR and East European sedimentary basins
More LessAlmost all sedimentary basin types described by modern plute-teetonics have been recognized within the territory of the Former Soviet Union (FSU) and Eastern Europe, BOlS el al. (1982), Demaison and Huizinga (1991), Helwig (1985). Klemme (1980a. 1987), Kingston el al. (1983) (Figs 1&2). They can be divided into three main groups according to their origin and general geodynamic setting: 1 Intracontinental and marginal rifts and aulacogens. 2 Orogenic intermontane and foredeep basins. 3 Cratonic basins.

Self-consistent quantitative modelling of the dynamic evolution of salt and sediments: an example from the Norwegian-Danish Basin
Authors K. Petersen and I. LercheThe facts that: (a) the approximately constant density of salt (~2.2 cm -3) may cause salt to flow by buoyancy under an increasing weight of sediment; (b) salt flows as a nearly incompressible fluid under applied stress, thereby causing deformations in the surrounding sediments; (c) the thermal conductivity of salt is higher than that of 'typical' sediments, thereby causing local thermal anomalies in the vicinity of the salt; and (d) salt may act as a tight seal for hydrocarbon accumulations along the salt flanks and below possible overhangs; all imply that the evolution of salt structures has an important impact on sedimentary basin evolution.
