Abstract

As part of a multi-disciplinary project for groundwater resources evaluation, eighty-eight transient electromagnetic (TEM)
soundings were accomplished in Resende sedimentary basin, Rio de Janeiro State, using the SIROTEM MK3 system
from GeoInstruments. The area is highly industrialised and part of the TEM data is affected by electromagnetic noise of
cultural origin. The TEM data were interpreted with a 1-D ridge regression inversion algorithm. Results for the superficial
horizons show relatively low values for the electric resistivity. Traverse sections of the resistivity as a function of depth
showed a good definition of the borders of the basin. A longitudinal section of about 25-km crossing the centre of the
basin shows a complex structure, evidencing a very irregular relief for top of the basement. Stratigrahic data of wells
available in the surveyed area are in good agreement with resistivity profiles of neighbour stations. Actions seeking to
reduce the influence of cultural noise are proposed.
