Abstract

Examples are briefly given of at least 2 events of
post-rifting tectonic inversion in the Potiguar and in
the Almada basins. The discussion of these examples
within the frame of the Meso-Cenozoic tectonics of
the South America plate leads to the conclusion that
the paradigm following which post-rift deformation
of the Brazilian margin basins are solely controlled
by thin-skinned gravitational tectonics should be
abandoned. As a corollary, it is proposed that
basement-involved compressional tectonics should
play an important role in the deformational history if
these basins.
