Abstract

Paleomagnetism associated with rock-magnetism studies have been used for a long time, not only for measuring the evolution of magnetic field through time, but also as an important argument to structural deformation, regional tectonic movements, magnetic mineralogy and sedimentary environments. The studied area is located in the Calimani-Gurghiu-Harghita volcanic chain and it has a very complex evolution caused by the collision between Apulia, the western tectonic block, and the European plate. The ages of volcanic centers vary along the arc on a N to S trend, gradually becoming younger. The tectonic evolution and the timing of volcanic activity are well constrained through the new paleomagnetic studies presented in this paper.
