Almost fifty years after the discovery of the Groningen gas field exploration for gas in the Netherlands is still successful. Most exploration wells in the country are drilled to Rotliegend and Bunter sands. Contrary to the Bunter the Rotliegend prospectivity is mainly found in an extensively drilled E-W corridor called the Rotliegend Fairway characterized by many existing gas fields.
