Amplitude versus offset (AVO) analysis, routinely used as a hydrocarbon indicator, is increasingly being employed in sensitive applications such as prospect evaluation and risk analysis. In order to produce reliable results in such circumstances, AVO analysis must be employed in the most rigorous menner possible. Hence, we must start to take accont of many features which are often over looked in favour of mathematical simplicity, elegance or practicality in a first-order formulation of AVO interpretation or modelling schemes.
