Abstract

Recent emphasis in marine seismic acquisition has been on cost-effective production techniques and "fit for purpose" quality. Commonly, airgun source specifications are actually damaging to both objectives. Individual gun timing specifications often, paradoxically, reduce quality by being too "tight" and the criteria for individual gun drop-out specifications are sometimes poorly matched to the interpreter's requirements of a low side-lobe wavelet on the final data.
