f Mineralogy, provenance and seismic velocity of sediments offshore Western Norway

The mineralogical composition of sediments outside the cored intervals are poorly known in sedimentary basins like the North Sea. The provenance of the sediments strongly influences the grain size distribution and the mineralogy of clastic sediments. Reservoir properties of sandstones are to a large extent controlled by the primary sorting and mineralogy, since this determines to a large extent subsequent diagenetic changes. The mechanical properties and seismic velocities of shales are also strongly influenced by biogenic input of carbonate and silica.
