Abstract
Various published and unpublished studies indicate that less than 20% of an interpreter's time is spent actively interpreting but 60% of the time is spent gathering data. Other studies indicate that 25% or more of reprographic costs are wasted on the wrong data. The problem arises because of the difficulty in managing large quantities of information on diverse media and stored in many different areas on-site and off-site. Centralised control over exploration data (more appropriately called "Information Assets.") wherever they are stored, should make major efficiency improvements and create a material business advantage for the Company utilising such a system. A modest one-third improvement in efficiency of data gathering could double the productive time of an interpreter. Improved accuracy in identifying information assets should reduce the wasted reprographics to low single figures.
