Abstract

Summary

This paper covers the results of expeditionary and remote studies of the Seyakha gas blowout on the Yamal Peninsula (C11 in GIS “AWO”), which happened for the first time from the channel of the polar river. On the 28th of June 2017, powerful gas blowout, self-flaming and explosion occurred there with formation of a crater. On basis of field research on the 2nd of July 2017 and analysis of remote sensing data, it was revealed that at the location of explosion, a mound (pingo like feature) had existed, which had blocked the channel of the river. Using remote sensing data, there were studied processes of the mound growth, changing of trajectory of the river channel, and also thermoabrasive processes, which had been destroying the crater walls after the explosion. On the 18-19th of September 2018, on the C11 object (on land and water area) ground penetrating radar (GPR) survey was held. On basis of complex analysis of geological and geochemical data, the natural genesis of gas blowout was determined with high probability. A conclusion was made about great danger of gas explosions for the eastern and, especially, north-eastern parts of the Yamal Peninsula.
