Abstract
The Thuringian basin is located in the central part of Germany. It represents a depression of several thousand km2 between the Tertiary uplift areas of the Harz and Thuringian Forest mountains and was originally formed as part of a northeast-southwest striking intramontane basin zone of the Central European Variscides also known as the Saar-Saale trough.
