Abstract
Central West Africa and the northern GUIT of Mexico have passive continental margins where a surviving rift grain has influenced, if not controlled, all subsequent sedimentation. It also appears that this control has compartmentalized and localized oil and gas production. Both margins exhibit similar structural patterns. Newly available regional gravity, topography, and bathymetry data, combined with previous seismic and well control, may lead to a framework for understanding the rifting proces itself.
