Abstract

Renewed exploration interest in the area of continental shelf west of Shetland during the UK 12th and 14th licensing rounds gives new significance to understanding the origin and distribution of the Upper Jurassic Sandstone, both as an exploration target within its area of known occurrence, and as the lateral equivalent of potentially better quality reservoirs. Despite almost 20 years of sporadic exploration activity, the west of Shetland area retains 'frontier' status because of the lack of geological understanding and limited commercial success. No formal lithostratigraphic framework is defined for the Jurassic in this area.
