Greenpeace steps up its campaign against Atlantic Frontier exploration
The UK oil industry operating in the Atlantic Margin can expect an escalating campaign opposing their activities mounted by Greenpeace. In its most dramatic gesture so far Greenpeace campaigners took command of the island rock of Rockall, some 460 km northwest of Scotland, with the M/V Greenpeace supporting the occupation. The organization says that it will not leave until the UK government signals an end to oil prospecting in the Atlantic Frontier area. Onshore, Greenpeace activists appear to be adopting a policy of harrassment against oil companies intending to carry out seismic data acquisition licensing commitments in the area. The organization is along with the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds, the Marine Conservation Society and the Whale and Dolphin Conservation Society also filing a complaint with the European Commission over Britainís alleged failure to implement the Environmental Impact Assessment Directive for oil exploration. Media briefing notes from Greenpeace suggest that its campaign is directed at protecting the sea life of the deep water Atlantic Frontier as well as arguing the case for an alternative energy policy.

Landmark and IBM get together on data management and storage
Landmark Graphics looks to have moved to address the data management area of its E&P software portfolio with an agreement with IBM and confirmation of a major new product. The company says it has expanded its business relationship with IBM to include a value-added reseller (VAR) agreement for PetroBank Master Data Store. The idea is that Landmark clients can have an integrated E&P information solution from desktop applications through archived data management. In an equally enthusiastic response Chip Nemesi, general manager of IBM's process and Petroleum Industry Solutions said: 'Customers tell us every day that their exploration and production data issues are the challenge of accessing, sharing and analysing data in a timely fashion. The linkage of Landmark's information management solutions with IBM's PetroBank Master Data Store provides the broadest available level of exploration and production data management.

Research article: The formation of the Jan Mayen microcontinent: the missing piece in the continental puzzle between the Møre-Vøring Basins and East Greenland
Authors B. Kuvaas and S. KodairaThis paper presents a study of the crustal structure and sedimentary sequences of the Jan Mayen Ridge and the Jan Mayen Basin (Fig. 1). These structures, constituting the Jan Mayen microcontinent, were split off from East Greenland in the late Oligocenc-carly Miocene. By the use of OBS data we define the continent-ocean transition along the western margin of the Jan Mayen Basin, being conjugate to the East Greenland continental margin.
