FlELD PROCESSING FOR OPTIMUM L/NE PLACEMENT: AN ECONOMIC CASE HISTORY
Authors Russell Roundtree and Stephen JewellField Processing has historically been used for optimizing acquisition parameters and for quality control of the data, usually at the shot record level. The advances in microcomputer technology available today make very powerful seismic processing routines on light weight, low cost computers possible. The capability of producing final stacks in the field hallows one to adjust the placement, orientation, extent and density of lines to be shot in the following days. A preliminary interpretation of the zone of interest is a byproduct of the field processing, in addition to the more efficient layout of the seismic program.

REFLECTION SEISMIC DATA ACQUISITION ON HIGH “Q” SURFACES
More LessSeismic data acquisition on high "Q" surfaces often results in very poor reflection data quality. The high amplitude, wide frequency bandwidth and scattering nature of surface waves, transmission problem associated with the reflected signal , and source and receiver coupling issues all contribute detrimentally to produce poor record quality. Two examples of a high "Q" surface are volcanics and carbonates.

RECENT ADVANCES IN COLLECTING AND PROCESSlNG 3D MARINE SURVEYS
Authors Mark S. Egan, Karl L. Schleicher and Laurent MeisterThe goal of 3D processing is to produce a set of high S/N ratio traces on a regular grid that represents the reflectivity of the subsurface in true position. To succeed, it is necessary to overcome a number of, problems, some of which are particularly difficult to resolve accurately when two boat shooting is used in congested areas.

ESTIMATING THE SEISMIC SOURCE SPECTRUM AND RADIATION PATTERN FOR A MULTlDIMENSIONAL EARTH
Authors Timothy H. Keko and Arthur B. WegleinEstimating the seismic wavelet and radiation pattern is useful in traditional seismic processing and is very important in AVO and migration/inversion methods. The wavelet estimation method presented here is a wave theoretic approach which for each source array requires the total field and its normal derivative along the receiver line. The method allows the subsurface to be arbitrarily inhomogeneous and anisotropic without requiring any information about the subsurface. The medium above the receivers must be known.

PERTURBATION METHODS FOR SEISMIC BODY WAVES IN FACTORIZED ANISOTROPIC INHOMOGENEOUS MEDIA
By V. CervenyRay tracing, travel time and vectorial amplitude computations can be performed for very general anisotropic, laterally varying, 3-D layered and block structures. The computations are, however, considerably more cumbersome and time consuming than for isotropic models. The concept of the factorized anisotropic inhomogeneous (FAI) media simplifies drastically such ray computations.

SEPARATING CONSTITUENTS IN COMPLEX ANISOTROPIC MEDIA
Authors Julie A. Hood and Michael SchoenbergA structure appears anisotropic when it consists of a fabric that is thinner than the seismic wavelengths that measure it. This fabric can result from periodic thin layering or microcrack orientation. The horizontal layering in sedimentary basins and the oceanic crust generates transverse isotropy, a hexagonal symmetry with a vertical symmetry axis. When observed in plan view, transverse isotropy does not generate a varia.tion of physical properties. However, with the advent of multi-component seismometers and walk-around experiments, azimuthal variations in shear-wave travel times is frequently observed. This anisotropic effect is presumed to result from vertical fractures.

SEISMIC TOMOGRAPHY
By P. HubralLike in medicine or non-destructive testing tomography has now become a well established imaging tool. In reflection seismology it is used to image the velocity or the reflectivity of the earth particularly in surface, reservoir, borehole, and crosshole seismology. Originally based on ray theory it can now be developed from the wave equation as described by Huygen' s principle given in form of Kirchhoff's integral for acoustic and elastic media.
