Shushufindi Field: Ecuador's Giant Revisited
More LessShushufindi Field, Ecuador's giant, was discovered by Texaco in 1970 and has already produced over 1 billion barrels of oil from Albian- Cenomanian age fluvio-estuarine and marginal marine sands of the Napo Formation. The structure is a 30-kilometer long anticline bounded to the east by a north-south trending reverse fault. When Shushufindi was returned to Petroproduccion after 20 years of development and production, the field was experiencing significant water breakthrough and there was little documented understanding of the reservoirs and the Field's compartmentalization. Now, nearly 30 years after its discovery, a clear model of the field is emerging.

Caracterización Estocástica De Yacimientos Estratigráficamente Complejos Mediante La Integración De Información Dinámica Del Yacimiento Usando Técnicas De Computación Evolutiva
Authors F.S. González, E.A.

From Frontal Subduction To A Compressional Transform System: New Geophysical Data On The Structure Of The Caribbean-South America Plate Boundary In Southeastern Caribbean
Authors E. Deville, A. Mascle, R. Griboulard, P. Huyghe, C. Padrón de Carillo and J-F. LebrunThe transition between the deformation belt of the east Caribbean active margin and the transform margin of the north of the south America plate develops mostly offshore, east of Trinidad, at the southern edge of the Barbados accretionary prism. The south of the Barbados Ridge constitutes a huge mature accretionary prism where Cretaceous oceanic crust and probably late Jurassic oceanic crust to the south is being subducted below the Caribbean plate with a relative plate motion between South America and the Caribbean plate at a rate of about 2 cm/year, in an E-W direction. The CARAMBA marine survey conducted in this hinge area, in January 2002, onboard the French O/V Atalante, provided about 60 000 km2 of multibeam data acquired together with more than 5000 km of high resolution seismic reflection data and 3.5 kHz sediment penetrator data. These new constraints on the structure and the deformation processes of this area show that approaching the South America continental margin, the Orinoco River and delta clastics influxes develop on both the flexured continental margin and the compressional accretionary complex. The multibeam and seismic data show linear ramp anticlines developing at the leading edge of the prism, while a more complex arrangement of shorter, discontinuous folds is apparent at the southern lateral border of the prism. Notably, at the deformation front of the southernmost part of the prism, the fold-&- thrust system vanished out toward the south with enechelon geometry. Normal listric faults as well as active E-W dextral strike-slip faults with mega-tension gashes deforming the sea bottom are obvious to the south at the vicinity of the South America Margin. Also, the survey spectacularly evidences that a large active belt of mud volcanoes and shale diapirs is widely developed in the area and extends SW, in the onshore Trinidad. These mud volcanoes are well developed along ramp anticlines and on top of sigmoid rises of shale diapirs.

Building A Discrete Fracture Network Based On The Deformation History: A Case Study From The Guaduas Field, Colombia
Authors A. Kloppenburg, J.C. Alzate and G. RodríguezProduction from a limestone reservoir in the Guaduas Field west of Bogotá, Colombia is largely from fractures. It carries high risk as the fracture network, as observed from limited well data, is spatially erratic and not well understood. To predict the fracture pattern, we focus on understanding the present day geometry of the reservoir as well as the change of shape (strain) throughout its geological history. We test and determine parameters for modeling based on the structural development through time, while also matching the fracture distributions in the wells. The parameters derived from these methods allow geologically reasonable prediction of fractures in the areas where there is no data. Four main fracture sets with characteristic orientation are recognized in the wells and confirmed in outcrop studies. The density distributions of the fracture sets correspond with either strain or tectonic thickness maps, and these maps were used to govern the density when building the discrete fracture model. In addition, a late, strike-slip fault system has been identified on the satellite image, on time slices in the seismic survey and in the field. A fracture network was built with length distributions that follow the outcrop observations. Relative connectivity of the fracture network, with the four fracture sets as well as the km-scale strike-slip faults, showed that the latter have an important role in drainage of the system. Fractures with a high risk of being closed due to present day stress were exempted from the network in this analysis.

Paleogeographic Implications Of The Lower Guadalupe (Dura) Formation In The Guando Oil Field, Colombia
Authors D. Leckie, J.M. de Armas, C. du Toit, K. Glazebrook, E. Gómez, P. Kroshko, B. Norris, A. Parsons and R. PeñasNexen Inc. is partner with Petrobras and Ecopetrol in the Guando oil field in the Boqueron Block, Upper Magdalena Valley of Colombia. The field, operated by Petrobras, has an estimated OOIP of 350 mmbbls and is currently producing more than 13,000 bopd from the Cretaceous Lower Guadalupe (Dura Member) Formation. The Lower Guadalupe Formation is ~630 ft thick. The Guando field is a westvergent subthrust play situated in the western foothills of the Eastern Cordillera. The Villeta Formation in the hanging wall overlies and seals westward dipping Guadalupe sands in the footwall of the Boqueron Fault. Source rock is the middle-late Cretaceous Villeta Formation with maximum burial and hydrocarbon generation occurring in deeper synclines. Detailed core analysis shows that the reservoir is a complex interfingering of transgressive and regressive shallow-marine deposits resulting from fluctuating relative sea levels. Field-wide bounding surfaces include wave-ravinement surfaces, tidalravinement surfaces, sequence boundaries; firm grounds revealed by the Glossifungites ichnofacies, and flooding surfaces. Highstand progradational environments include proximal and distal shelf deposits as well as distal offshore marine shales. Highstand deposits are pervasively cemented with syndepositional phosphate. Transgressive environments include tidal-inlet deposits and an estuary-complex facies association; one tidal inlet complex is dominated by micritic carbonate and oyster deposits with minor siliciclastic sandstone facies association. The best reservoirs occur in transgressive tidal inlet and incised valley facies with porosity exceeding 25 %. PSDM processing of the 3D seismic allowed recognition of basal incised valley deposits as well as tear faults. Reservoir permeability is enhanced by a complex naturally occurring fracture system.

Camisea Gas Fields, Peru. First Development And New Technologies Applied
Authors J. Luquez, J. Cruells, F. Seminario, A. Viera, D. Gamez and A. DisalvoPluspetrol Peru Corporation took over the operation of the block 88: Camisea by December 2000. After the environmental impact assessment, the first field operation related to G&G disciplines was the acquisition of 800 km2 of 3D seismic to cover San Martin and Cashiriari structures. The objective was to improve the structural image, delineate the fluid distribution, resolve the internal bed geometry and recognize any reservoir heterogeneity. The field development contemplates the drilling of the wells from only two well pads in each structure. Consequently, these are high-angle extended-reach wells where the wellbore stability assessment has become mandatory on the preparation of the drilling program. Several proved and new technologies were applied in issues as drilling fluids, fracture and pressure gradient analysis and rock mechanical properties feeding a geomechanical model. To follow-up the well operations in such a remote area a real-time data transmission via web page was implemented. All authorized interested personnel from anywhere access all that data. The implemented welltest design resulted in a very precise tool to obtain the better performance of the well. A multi-compositional numerical simulator helps in improving recoveries and anticipates production. Several conceptual models were run to perform sensitivity analyses to different parameters and designs. Finally, with all these new technologies and concepts applied, the obtained results exceeded the expected and gave a good confidence to the future field performance. The first well San Martin-1001 was spuded on July 15th, 2002 reaching the final depth of 3002 mMD in 75 days with an offset of 1500 m. The Absolute Open Flow was estimated in 470 MMscfD of Gas.

Remaining Oil Accumulations In Northern Marañon Basin. A Complex History Entrapment Of Oils
Authors W.I. Martínez Cabañas and M. Erquiaga AguirreTo the north east of block 1AB, there is a large portion of the basin that has remained relatively unexplored due to negative outcomes of the first exploration wells drilled in the area. However, recent exploration activity (late 90´s) resulted in three small discoveries that have brought light to this remote part of the basin demystifying the previous negative perceptions above this area. The present study intends to reveal the significance of the complex distribution of oils encountered in the area, and supports the possibility of mid-light oil accumulations at the northeast of block 1AB.

Campo Guando, Primer Descubrimiento De La Antesala Del Siglo XXI En El Valle Superior Del Magdalena, Colombia

Campo Libertador, Cuenca Oriente, Ecuador; Existen Más Reservas Por Recuperar?

More LessThe Mesozoic assigned silicoclastic sediments of Southern Ucayali Basin held, up to now, the most important Gas acumulation in Peru. The integration of surface and sub-surface data provided by recent wells (logs, cores and cutting samples) and 3D seismic acquired in the block 88, allowed to create sequence stratigraphic and reservoir model. Throughout the seismostratigraphic analysis, not less than four third-order depositional sequences were defined in the studied interval. Local and regional unconformities limit these units. A strong tectonic control is identified in the sedimentation of the lower sequences. This tectonic generated NNE-SSW narrow depocenters that contrast with the WNW-ESE predominant orientation of the Tertiary Andean structures. Sedimentary models that allow the prediction of the sandy bodies geometry were constructed. Besides, cores and cutting microscopic analyses also help the identification of the reservoir petrophysical variations. The obtained results give key data to properly characterize the reservoir as flow units and help in definition of future borehole location.

Lote 88 “ Camisea”. Geometria Y Origen De Las Trampas De Gas. Cuenca De Ucayali. Este De Peru
Authors A. Disalvo, M. Arteaga and J. Chung ChingEl Lote 88, "Camisea", is located in the outer Subandean Thrust Belt of the Ucayali Basin, eastern Perú. The structural style is thin-skinned with the lower detachment placed in the Silurian shale. The deformation took place during the tertiary Andean Orogeny. The dominant structures are several kilometers length ramp anticlines. These structures are WNW-ESE trended and around a thousand meters of structural height. These anticlines, that are the main hydrocarbon traps, are interpreted to be generated either by a simple thrust or by a complex thrust system. Altough minor faults propagation anticlines and interference structures are present, they are not important as hydrocarbons traps. The already found hydrocarbon traps are gas filled to their spill points with no oil ring. They belong to Class I in Sales´s Classification. The final geometry of the traps are due to the combination of four main factors: 1.-The original fault bend anticlines geometry. 2.- The imbrications of two o more faults. 3.-Several minor out-of-sequence and accommodation faults developed in the crest of the anticlines. 4.- Sedimentary and stratigraphic elements that generate a NNW-SSE hills and valleys, regularly trended, separated 2 - 3 km each and more than 30 Km in length. These features, with more than 100 m relief, are superimposed to the main geometry deformation.

The Gibraltar Case Study, Northern Llanos Foothills, Colombia. Success Of A Complex Technical Business In Complicated Environments
Authors T. Villamil, J. Muñoz, J. Sanchez, J.J. Aristizabal, J. Velasco, A. Fajardo, P.E. Luna, A. Mantilla, L.E. Peña, M.G. Paz, O. Silva, E. Sanchez, N.S. Meza, J. Martinez, L.A. Pachon and E. GallardoThe Gibraltar discovery by Ecopetrol opened a frontier area of significant extent in the previously untested northern Llanos foothills province of the Eastern Cordillera of Colombia. The Gibraltar project when Ecopetrol captured the block had three main objectives and all were accomplished. The first objective was to verify or refute a structural geological model with a sidetrack that would reach the Paleocene Barco Formation and demonstrate the presence of hydrocarbons in the area. Ecopetrol´s hypothesis postulated that the well drilled originally by Occidental penetrated the backlimb of a single stack within a duplex structure in the central region of a triangle zone. This model was proven right after drilling three sidetracks. The Barco tested water with very low percentage of light hydrocarbons. The second purpose was to test presence and quality of hydrocarbons in the Mirador Formation. The original hypothesis was postulated based on a reinterpretation of unconventional petrophysics and unconventional fluids, this hypothesis argued for a missed or bypassed pay case. Tests of the Mirador Formation verified the presence of 57-degree condensate that flowed at a rate of 600 barrels per day and 44 million cubic feet of gas per day, flux restricted by gas separation and storage capacity. The third objective of Gibraltar re-entry was to find commercial hydrocarbons, open a new play, and to increase risk investment in the region. This third objective has not been verified yet but the following characteristics indicate that it is extremely likely that this is the case: the well is 2 km from a main pipeline with capacity, the hydrocarbons are of very good quality; the crest of the structure is at 6,500 feet, the shallowest discovery of the foothills; permeability from tests is of 800 m.d. being the highest of the foothills; finding cost for Ecopetrol was of 7 cents per barrel; finally and most importantly, the discovery was the first in the region.

Desarrollo De Un Yacimiento Con Geometria Compleja En Faja Plegada Mediante La Perforación De Pozos Horizontales: Yacimiento El Porton (Argentina)

Discrete Fracture Characterization Applied To The Margarita Field, Bolivia
More LessThe Margarita field in Bolivia was discovered in 1998 through the drilling and testing of the well MGR-x1. The discovered reservoir is the Huamampampa deep Devonian naturally fractured formation, containing gas and condensate. Two other wells MGR-x2 and MGR-x3 were drilled showing better fracture characteristics than the well MGR-x1. With the objective to improve the productivity of the well MGR-x1 a programme to perform a sidetrack and drill a horizontal section was proposed. Both, image logs interpretation and outcrops analogue study, provided the basic tools to establish the methodology applied to generate a discrete fracture network distribution to the vicinity area of the proposed horizontal section. Subsequent application of the fluid flow equations through fractures established a methodology to first calibrate the fractures productivity with the production test of the well and then to predict the productivity of the discrete fractures expected to be intercepted by the horizontal section of the well. The benefit of generating these predictions, specially during the early development stages of a field, is aimed to help in the selection of the recommended direction for the horizontal well in order to look for the largest possible number of intersections with natural fractures of best expected properties. Currently the side track operations to the well MGR-x1 is in progress.

The Tertiary Fusagasugá Succession; A Record Of The Complex Latest Cretaceous-Pre-Miocene Deformation In An Area Between The Magdalena Valley And Sabana De Bogotá
Authors G. Bayona, M. Cortés, C. Jaramillo and R. LlinasThe Tertiary succession in the Fusagasugá syncline includes unconformities, thick marginal to alluvial deposits, and an upsection change in sandstone composition that constrain pre-Miocene deformation eastward of the present western flank of the Cordillera Oriental. Five informal units were mapped along the western flank of the syncline. Lower Paleocene finegrained coastal plain deposits of Unit I (499 m) rest paraconformably upon upper Campanian shallow-marine sandstones and calcareous shales of the Guadalupe Group; palynological data document the absence of middle and upper Maastrichtian strata. The disconformity between paleosols at the top of Unit I and estuary sandstone and siltstones of Unit II (153 m) marks a second stratigraphic surface with a biostratigraphic gap that probably includes the Paleocene-Eocene boundary. The remaining succession (Units III to V; >1400 m) is not dated, and the lithofacies association of sandy siltstones and sandstones indicates that depositional environments prograded from coastal to alluvial plains. Mappeable sandstone intervals in Units II to V show lateral extent of several hundred of meters, intraformational gentle angular unconformities, and gentler dip of beds toward the axis of the syncline; these map patterns are similar to those predicted in growth strata in continental settings, suggesting accumulation during deformation. The upsection increase in population of lithic fragments and feldspars between the Guadalupe Group and Unit I, of metamorphic lithic fragments between Units I and II, and of volcanic lithic fragments between Units III and IV indicate the unroofing of source area(s) and volcanism during deposition of Units IV and V.

Quantitative Assesment Of Regional Siliciclastic Top-Seal Potential: A New Application Of Proven Technology In Frontier And Maturing South American Basins
Authors J. Deckelman, S. Lou, P. D‘Onfro and R. LahannUsing the offshore Pelotas basin, Brazil, as anexample, we present a methodology by whichpetrophysically-derived Vclay and capillary displacement pressure data, in conjunction with interval isochore maps, can be used to evaluate regional, siliciclastic present-day and paleo- top-seal effectiveness and relative risk. This method has broad application to frontier and maturing exploration areas where data limitations preclude more sophisticated seismically-derived velocity- based evaluations. As much of the Pelotas basin is deemed to be gas prone, top-seal effectiveness for normal density (0.1 to 0.2 g/cc) dry gas was assessed quantitatively by establishing relationships between density-log-derived hydrocarbon column height and overburden thickness using a most likely Vclay content. With constant Vclay, column height increases with increasing overburden due to a compaction-driven decrease in mudrock porosity, accompanied by a decrease in permeability and pore-throat diameter. Using these relationships, interval isochore maps(overburden thickness maps) can be transformed into hydrocarbon-column-height maps to define spatial variation in top-seal effectiveness, expressed in meters of contained gas column. Laboratory and model data (Aplin, Lang and Katsube, 2000) show that clay content and porosity (ultimately pore throat diameter) are the dominant controls on siliciclastic mudrock permeability, hence top-seal potential. Mudrock porosity is driven dominantly by burial - induced compaction; clay content is dependent on both depositional and diagenetic processes. Overburden can be determined with a reasonable degree of certainty from seismic and well data, whereas regional variation in clay content can, at best, only be estimated from depositional models. Therefore, for a given overburden, it is uncertainty in clay content that comprises the greatest risk in regional siliciclastic top-seal analysis. For this reason, we relate siliciclastic top-seal risk to clay content, when overburden/mudrock-porosity relationships, fluid densities, and requisite column heights are known.

El Pre-Aptense En La Cuenca Oriente Ecuatoriana
Authors M. Diaz, P. Baby, M. Rivadeneira and F. ChristophoulThe present paper describes the structural, stratigraphic and seismic characteristics of the pre-Aptian units of the Oriente Basin. The analysis of lithologic columns from wells as Sacha Profundo-1, Tambococha-1, etc..., and the interpretation of seismic sections allowed us to identify pre-Aptian formations in the central-northern and eastern parts of the Oriente basin. They consist of four seismic units: Unit 1 (Basement); Unit 2 (Paleozoic); Unit 3 (Upp.Tr. - Lw. J.) and the Unit 4 (Mid. J. - Early K.) that includes a new formation named Tambococha Fm. (eastern of the basin). Structural analysis of some structures has permitted to define the tectonic framework of the pre-Aptian basins. Two longitudinal "Back-arc" basins with different structural styles developed from Middle Jurassic to Early Cretaceous. The first one, known as the Corredor Sacha-Shushufindi, was controlled by normal deep faults and corresponds to an aborted Triassic "Rift". The second, known as Sistema Invertido Capirón- Tiputini, was structured by normal listric fault branched on a decollement located in the basement. The pre- Aptian petroliferous system of the Oriente Basin is poor studied. The Santiago Formation seems to be a good source rock, but its distribution in the Oriente basin is not well defined yet.

Historia De La Cuenca Cretacea Del VSM En Un Marco Cronoestratigrafico. Implicaciones Ambientales
By L.M.

Authors M. Fernández, H. Verzi and E. SanchezThe aim is to emphasize the use of 3-D seismic (more 2000 Km2), well-logs, cores, bioestratigraphic data to improve pre-existing regional geological models. It permits to explain different traps, provide new opportunities for exploration programs and development planning. The Vaca Muerta, Quintuco and Loma Montosa Formations (Tithonian / Early Valanginian) are transgressive-prograding depositional sequences of deep marine shales and slope to shelf carbonates and clastics deposits, in the Neuquen Basin. This interval has a preserved thickness from 375 to 1100 m and the most important hydrocarbon fields are located in Loma La Lata and Río Neuquén. However, the reservoir conditions are still a main risk factor. In the study area, the stratigraphical record shows that global eustatic sea-level changes rule the influence on sedimentation, modified by the local effects of tectonics episodes (Huincul High). Therefore, tectonism also controls the thickness of the main systems tracts, the areal distribution and the initial profile of the carbonate platform. The influence of this tectonic events is more pronuonced southward. In addition, the tidal-influenced environments appears to have been the strong control in the carbonate platform.

Subandean Basins And The Independents: The Future
Authors C. Garibaldi and D. GeroldThe current combination of external forces (industry and macro environment) has prompted an era of consolidation. The new super-majors must now satisfy even larger appetites for materiality. These point them towards focus regions with high prospectivity, which are often countered by severe technological, marketability, or geopolitical barriers. In their wake, they are leaving large interstices and regional niches to independents, including the mature, emerging, and frontier Sub Andean basins. This opens an unprecedented window of opportunity for independents. To succeed in this region they need to differentiate by adopting new strategic positions and developing a new set of technical and commercial competencies, including for example, the mitigation and management of surface risks and better knowledge about their hosts. After a successful 1990's decade our continent has now fallen victim to a generalized perception of geopolitical and economic disarray, disproving itself as a reliable supply source. Besides stabilizing politically and economically, the governments in the region must struggle to first reestablish investor credibility, and then take a daring stand to reengineer their sector policies to attract the much needed investments. Since independents should likely be their target audience, governments should tailor their legal, fiscal and contractual frameworks to the independents' financial constraints and screening criteria, facilitate access to market for stranded resources, and focus on the mitigation of their surface risks. To successfully compete among themselves and against the rest of the world's petroleum provinces, heroic measures are perhaps in order, including the slaying of "sacred cows" and other myths.

Structure Of The Offshore Sinu Accretionary Wedge. Northern Colombia
More LessThe Sinu Accretionary Wedge is located along the northern Colombia Caribbean margin an is partially exposed onshore (Lower Magdalena valley and San Jacinto mountains) and offshore extending from Uraba to the offshore Santa Marta area and joints the northern accretionary wedge of Venezuela in the north. The Offshore and younger part of the prism is much wider and develope than the inner " starved " onshore part. The Proto-Magdalena, Plato and other sedimentary systems contributed to a high sediment supply triggered by the surrection of the Central and Eastern Andean Cordillera since Upper Miocene time, when the offshore part of the prism developed. The offshore Sinu accretionary wedge illustrates the effect of strong lateral (i. e. along strike) variations of syn-tectonic sediments on the structural style of the prism. The thickness of syn-sedimentary strata is huge along the Proto-Magdalena delta (Offshore Cartagena area) which results in a blanketing effect of the deformation (i. e. false image of non-deformed strata). Along strike variations of sediment supply induce lateral changes of the critical taper angle. To re-equilibrate and reach a more stable profile (lower than the critical angle) the wedge collapses through normal faulting and toe-thrusting (i. e. thrusts that accommodate rear extension). Gravitationally induced toe-thrusts are superimposed to pre-existing thrust imbricates related to compression. This complex structure becomes more complicated by the presence of a ductile level of overpressure Oligocene shale that rise as shale ridges. Listric normal faults, toe-thrusts and shale ridges control fore-arc basins like the San Bernardo basin (SW from Cartagena). The present day structure of the offshore Sinu accretionary wedge is the result of NW-vergent compressional imbricates related to the B-subduction process overprinted by extensional and compressional gravitational structures.

Evidencias Sísmicas De Una Discordancia Intra-Villeta En La Region Nor-Oriental Del Valle Superior Del Magdalena

Cajones Formation Geometry And Regional Facies Distribution In The Boomerang Hills Area, Bolivia
Authors M. Kusiak and D. ZubietaThe Cajones Formation represents one of the most important reservoirs of the Boomerang fields. This reservoir produce gas and condensate mainly from thins sands horizons and the shale's constitutes sometimes a good seal of the Yantata Formation top reservoirs. The Upper Cretaceous (Maastrichtian) Cajones Formation share a gradational contact with the Yantata Formation and it had been affected by the Pre-Tertiary unconformity, which had cut almost all the upper strata section of this sequence in the Boomerang Hills area. The representative sequence for the Boomerang consists of white calcareous sandstones interbeds in a low scale of sandy limestones and shales levels. A striking characteristic of the Cajones Formation is the abundance and diversity of shapes of cemented areas, some of which are well enough defined to be considered concretions. Different cores were cut from some exploration and exploitation wells drilled in the Boomerang Hills area, shown buried stems of woody plants or vertical to subvertical roots and some burrows of large invertebrates. The isopach map of the Cajones Formation thickness indicates thinning from east to west and south to north as a result of Pre-Tertiary unconformity at the top of the sequence. The seismic interval does not present too much thickness and its internal character has a moderate parallelism and continuity. At the northeast of the Boomerang Hills where the depositional systems or facies changes and thinning is not easy to identify the horizons where the seismic lost definition and the Cajones Formation sediments could be interpreted as Tertiary levels.

Transectas Regionales De La Corteza Superior De Colombia

Caracterizacion De Las Unidades Arenosas Del Grupo Villeta En El Sector Suroccidental Del Valle Superior Del Magdalena

Sequence Stratigraphy Of The Late Silurian - Devonian Subandean Basin In Southern Bolivia And Northern Argentina
Authors A.P. Miranda, C. Souza Cruz, J.H. Melo and J. OllerDue to the recent discovery of several giant gas fields in the Subandean Basin in both Argentina and Bolivia, it has been noticed an increasing interest in detailing the stratigraphic setting of the Devonian reservoirs in these areas. Although extensive regional geological studies have been already performed in that area, they were carried out according to a lithostratigraphic approach. The absence of a suitable chronostratigraphic control was a major constraint for the understanding of the late silurian - Devonian paleogeography. The present work intends to apply a modern sequence stratigraphic approach on the late silurian - devonian section within the study area, in order to provide more reliable chronostratigraphic correlations between outcrop and well data. In this sense, selected outcrops were studied, regarding their palynological content, sedimentary facies and related processes, depositional systems and sequence stratigraphic elements. Well data, some of them related to recent gas discoveries, were also regionally integrated. The interpretation of outcrop and well data provided a suitable chronostratigraphic input for the recognition of sequence stratigraphic key elements and definition of 2nd and 3rd order sequences. More consistent regional correlations resulted from this new approach, including major devonian highstand and lowstand sand bodies, main reservoirs in the Subandean Basin gas fields.

Modelo Estratigráfico Para El Cretácico Basal (Aptiano-Albiano) En El Norte De La Sub-Cuenca De Neiva, Valle Superior Del Magdalena, Colombia

Paleogeography During The Aptian – Albian In The Neiva Subbasin (Upper Magdalena Basin, Colombia)
Authors C. Osorio, M. De Freitas, G. Tellez and J. AmaralThe tectonic and stratigraphic evolution of the upper Magdalena valley and adjacent Colombian areas took place in several structural and sedimentary episodes. The original Jurassic back-arc extensional basin in the area has been modified during several periods of compression, oblique slip, and elevation since the late Cretaceous to the present. A complex structural geometry and sedimentation has been developed in this basin, and maturation, migration, lithostratigraphic histories are significantly diverses in different sub-areas. A good comprehension of depositional environments , sedimentology and reservoir quality evolution during the Aptian-Albian is a key factor for the hydrocarbon exploration in the Upper Magdalena Basin. Since the clastic Aptian-Albian reservoirs (Alpujarra and Caballos Fms) are considered the main target in the area , the study was focussed on a regional paleogeographic mapping integrating all the available field and well information. It appears that the marine Aptian-Albian sediments was deposited overlying a Triassic- Jurassic basement on two main sedimentary cycles. The Alpujarra and Caballos reservoirs with a deepening marine environment to the North were influenced by clastics supplying coming from two existing paleo-highs: the Proto Central Cordillera to the West and the Garzon Massif to the East of the studied area. The reservoirs properties are considerably degraded to the South and the East of Neiva Subbasin.

Tertiary Depositional Environments And Reservoir Properties In The Sinu Accretionary Prism (Offshore -Colombia)
More LessThe Sinu accretionary prism is located in the northwestern corner of South America (Colombia) . This area has been submitted to major tectonic events related with the convergence of South America, Nazca, Caribbean and Cocos plates. The sedimentary clastic input influence of the Magdalena River delta since the Miocene (figure 1) was another key point for the evolution of this area. Overlying the oceanic crust, an Upper Cretaceous and Tertiary sedimentary sequence that could reach about 8000 m of thickness was deposited in the Sinu area. An integrated sedimentary and seismic stratigraphic study was carried out to predict the depositional environments and the reservoir properties in the study area. To attain these objectives the available well and outcrop data were integrated, a seismic facies interpretation of the available 2D information was performed in the Upper Miocene-Lower Pliocene interval and five paleogeographic maps from the Upper Paleocene to the Pleistocene were elaborated. During the Upper Paleocene to Lower Oligocene ages there was a low sedimentary clastic input in the Sinu area, improving the risk of reservoir presence. Later on, during the regional marine regressive phase of Late Oligocene, the development of turbiditic deposits is very probable and expected in the area. From the Middle Miocene, the major uplift of the Andean Cordilleras increased drastically the sedimentation rates of the paleo Magdalena and the paleo Sinu rivers. These fluvio- deltaic deposits passed to upper and lower fan environments towards the basin. The paleogeography model indicates that lower fan deposits were extensively developed in the Northern sector of the Sinu accretionary prism during the Upper Miocene - Early Pliocene. Additionally, the seismic facies observed (chaotic and continuous to discontinuous) are interpreted as sheet sands and distributary channels, considered as good to excellent potential reservoirs. In conclusion, good reservoir properties are expected for the Upper Miocene - Lower Pliocene lower fan turbiditic deposits related with the Paleo-Magdalena Delta.

Tectonic Influence In Trap Generation During The Early Eocene, Talara Forearc Basin, Nw Perú: A Case Study Of The Mogollón Formation
More LessThe Mogollon Formation represents one of the most important productive reservoir in the Lower Eocene of the Talara basin, northwest Peru, having accumulated almost 300 millions barrels since 1910. From a sedimentological point of view, transgressive deltas, alluvial fans, deltas and braided fluvial systems are interpreted from base to top. A complete geological overview was carried out, targeting the evaluation of the development and exploratory potential of blocks X and XVI. Well data, integrated in regional cross sections, were the base of the interpretations. The integration of production and seismic data has allowed, in some areas, the calibration of the interpretation based on electrical logs. A complex fault interation is observed, which gives some indication of how the trapping mechanism has evolved during periods of high and low tectonic activity. Basically we interpret two main traps styles: a) sand-conglomerate bodies which were subsequently tilted by tectonic activity, and where the hydrocarbon potential is higher in positions close to the back of master faults, and b) where regional listric faults have triggered rotational features (rollovers) in the hanging wall, increasing the frequency of small subordinate faults located at or near the top of the deformed structure. Consequently, productivity increases due to an improvement in the original reservoir permeability. In both cases, the final recovery is better than in other situations as for instance, in wells drilled on the flanks of rollover structures.

Estructuras Sencillas: Un Objetivo A Explorar: Ejemplos De Campos En Las Cuencas De Los Llanos Y El Putumayo

Facies Analysis And Stratigraphic Model Of The Carboniferous–Cretaceous Sequences In Eastern Central Subandean/Chaco Plain, Bolivia
Authors C. Souza Cruz and A. RochaDetailed facies analysis and depositional systems interpretation with outcrop, cores and well data, associated with seismic and palynological data, provided a suitable input for a more consistent paleoenvironment interpretation and stratigraphic regional correlation of the study area. Five megasequences (2nd order cycles) are proposed, based on major erosional unconformities: Upper Devonian (Iquiri-Itacua), Tupambi- Tarija, Escarpment-San Telmo, Elvira/Cangapi and Ichoa-Cajones megasequences. These five megasequences are split into several 3rd order cycles, which are widespread correlated within the area. Except for the Upper Devonian megasequence interpreted as shallow marine and glaciomarine, all other megasequences represent a thick continental section. Each 3rd order cycle within the Tupambi-Tarija and Escarpment-San Telmo megasequences starts with an erosional surface and presents fining upward arrangement. They are formed by polymitic conglomerate, massive or cross-bedded sandstone, covered by mudstone, shale and diamictite. There is a relationship between observed cyclicity, erosional surface and depositional systems explained by sea level change and glaciation. Right after glacial stage while sea level is rising, an isostatic rebound and decompaction locally cause a relative base level fall, triggering erosion, paleovalleys carving and sediment bypassing. During transgression and highstand periods the paleovalleys are infilled by backsteping fluvial deposits, gradually changing to flood plain and/or lacustrine deposits. A new climatic change drives glacial expansion causing local erosion, glaciotectonic deformation, glacial diamictites and periglacial deposits. The sandstone reservoirs are widespread in the study area and continuous above Escarpment- San Telmo megasequence. The thick glacigenic diamictites and lacustrine shales/mudstone facies, with regional extension, provide effective seals for the carboniferous interval.
